Malaga drew, Sporting Gijon lost, and Real Sociedad lost aswell to take the Promotion race to Premier League to last day, 2 out of 3 will go up.

Malaga and Gijon on 69 points just have to avoid defeat at home, while Sociedad on 67 points have to win and hope.

    -----

Sporting B won 3-0 away in their Play-off final first leg away, home leg should see them promoted. The only team from Asturias who made the Play-off final look dead certs to win promotion!

    -----

The Ultimate humiliation is now just a week away, Sporting Gijon in Premier, Sporting Gijon B in Segunda B and Real Oviedo in Tercera!  :(

Sporting Gijon could have the best team in Asturias next season and the second best team (Sporting B!) with Marino de Launco the only other team from Asturias playing above Tercera level (Segunda B).

    Back to things Real Oviedo.:(

Only 2 of the present squad have contracts with the club. January signings Mario Preito and Pacheta are the only 2 players actually on the books.
All other players are free agents on July 1st.
The clubs directors have said that they'll wait a few weeks before they announce a new manager and then formulate a transfer strategy.

How many of the 2007-08 squad stays remains to be seen. Both Diego Cervero and Curro our best players have indicated a desire to sign new contracts with the club, but who knows?

Saw Real Oviedo play twice last season, v Aviles & v Caudal......fairly easy win, 4 - 0 in each game-- big difference between the teams was Curro in midfield; he can pick out a pass with his eyes closed, plays it with his left or right and usually picks the best option available to him, if I recall correctly he scored v Caudal......from what I saw, Oviedo were too good for Tercera and Curro made it all happen. Hope to see Oviedo a few times next season too, and would really appreciate it if Curro was still there!

It's hopeless at RO for the forseeable future, I'm afraid.

Amazing that such a storied team could fall so far, so fast.

I'm going with Sporting (I know, disgraceful) while still hoping against hope that RO can someday make it back up. At least Asturies has one team in the Primera now.

    ¡Puxa Asturies!

Just got back from 2 weeks in Asturias celebrating Fiesta San Xuan. Must admit my distaste for all things Gijon is lessening, it is after all a spectacular place to visit and good luck to them in Primera. Enough of that cr@p, hope they finish Bottom and Sporting B too, hopefully Oviedo can swap places with the B side next year.

I was at the Caudal 4-0 home win, god does that feel like a long time ago!

On the signings front, Curro was the first to re-sign. The list of players not to be offered new contracts contained one big suprise, one less so and then the usual suspects. Diego Meijide was let go along with Stefan, so an everpresent goes and a youngster who had shown good improvement also. Meijide presumably was on high wages, Stefan was Carrascos favourate so maybe scarred by association. Longest serving player Jon Carrera leaves after 6 years at the club after an injury ravaged season. Santos also not to be offered a new contract.

Oh yeah a new manager was named, José Manuel Martínez, an experianced respected manager at Tercera level, most famous for his time with Caudal getting them promoted to Segunda B.

Not suprisingly ex-Caudal stalwarts Falo and Armando Quesada who Carrasco failed to utilise are to be offered contracts. Contracts run out June 30th and all players can leave then for free. Oviedo seem to be dragging their feet, presuming that most of the existing squad won't attract much interest elsewhere and will re-sign, Curro was the obvious exception and they have made a top signing keeping himon the books.

The Oviedo B team "Vetusta" (the Roman name for Oviedo) secured promotion to the Regional Preferente First Division, two divisions below Tercera.

Raúl González (doesn't he play for Real Madrid?) named new manager.

José Manuel Martínez is actually the new director of football not manager (my mistake).

    New Manager:

Julio Raúl González Pérez (Avilés) - 52 years old, has managed 19 years in Segunda B and Tercera, teams such as Caudal, Pontevedra, Alcorcón, Zamora and Burgos.
He worked alongside José Manuel Martínez for a number of years at Caudal.

    His managerial record:
    1981/82 Ensidesa 3ª División
    1982/83 Ensidesa 2ª división B
    1983/84 Real Avilés 2ª División B
    1985/86 Zamora 2ª División B
    1986/87 Zamora 2ª División B
    1987/88 Real Avilés 2ª División B
    1988/89 Real Avilés 2ª División B
    1989/90 Selección de Guinea
    1990/91 Villarreal 2ª División B
    1990/91 Ponferradina 2ª División B
    1993/94 Real Avilés 2ª División B
    1997/98 Real Avilés 2ª División B
    1999/00 Caudal 2ª División B
    2000/01 Caudal 2ª División B
    2001/02 Pontevedra 2ª División B
    2002/03 Alcorcón 2ª División B
    2003/04 Alcorcón 2ª División B
    2004/05 Alcorcón 2ª División B
    2005/06 Zamora 2ª División B
    2006/07 Alcorcón 2ª División B

    www.oviedin.com end of season summary, thought i'd paraphrase;

Carrasco to blame primarily for underestimating teams and for disrespecting other sides. He failed to build a cohesive unit when given ample time to do so. Away form was largely pathetic and his excuses for losing doubly so. It's revealed the players revolted against his tactics before the first Play-off game, with Mario Preito confronting him saying they would not win. Not a very good situation to be in but his job was to have the squad prepared and ready to win the Play-offs. it wasn't. Caravaca aren't Real Madrid afterall they're a bunch of amateurs, how can a team of proffessionals be so badly led? the manager had lost the support from his players and long before the fans who's numbers continued to dwindle.
Alot of blame attached to the directors and people above Carrasco. They took over mid way through 2006-7 as the team plummeted out of segunda B, they failed to turn things around and again 2007-8 failed again. Diaz Galan (Sporting Director) signed alot of players that ultimately Carrasco didn't want and seldom used.
New administration have to learn from mistakes and Raúl González (replacing Lobo Carrasco as manager) and José Manuel Martínez (replacing Diaz Galan as Director of football) know this division inside out.

ex-Oviedo player Santi Cazorla lifts the European Cup with Spain. Cazorla, a product of the Oviedo youth set-up played a key role in Spains historic campaign, didn't start but came on as a sub in all but one game, scoring a crucial penalty in the shoot-out against Italy.
The other Asturian player in the squad David Villa didn't have a bad tournament either finishing top scorer.

    ---

Falo has turned down the offer of a new contract and looks likely to sign for Caudal, so that's one player not re-signing.

    Squad (Plantilla) 2008-2009

    Aulestia (Goalkeeper) Portero (27)
    Ivan (Goalkeeper) Portero (21)
Jose Luis (Right Back) Defensa (27)
Juan Luis (Holding Midfield) Medio (31)
Sergio Villanueva (Right Midfield) Medio (33)
Mario Prieto (Central Midfield) Medio (31)
    Curro (Central Midfield) Medio (27)
    Jaime (Left Midfield) Medio (22)
    Diego Cervero (Striker) Delantero (25)
    Matias (Striker) Delantero (20)

    Not re-signing:
(Defenders) Meijide, Bravo, Carmona, (Midfielders) Falo, Jon Carrera, Centrón Santos (Forwards) Stefan, Armando and Bruno.

Current state of affairs then, the spine of the side with the exception of the defence has re-signed, key players like Cervero Curro and Mario Preito staying. If Pacheta and Iker Lasarte stay then that leaves the only gap in the squad in central defence. Hopefully young players like Nico (central defender) and Pablo Naredo (left midfield) get chances this year before they get poached by bigger clubs (re: Juan Mata, Santi Cazorla – two players playing at top who came up through Oviedo youth)
