Correlation does not imply cause, but I suspect RBA is directly responsible for this! ;-) NEWARK, N.J. — Law enforcement officials in Newark, N.J., say March was the city's first month without a killing in more than 40 years. Police Director Garry McCarthy said this week that the last time the city went through a calendar month without a murder was in May 1966. McCarthy attributes the decreases to progress by police in combatting the narcotics trade. The reprieve comes as welcome news in a city that has become a symbol of urban crime and blight since it was rocked by riots in the late 1960s.
Spoke too soon. Luckily the two above lived. However someone was shot and killed yesterday and the streak ends at 38 days....
I guess that meeting some local girls and letting them show me arrond the city was not a great Idea on my part, good thing that It wasn't me the one that broke that streak.
like most cities, Newark has relatively safe parts and some relatively un-safe parts. I would categorize the Ironbound (the area across the bridge from the Arena) to be safe.
http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/04/florida_man_is_fatally_shot_ou.html Report that someone from Florida got shot outside a sports bar near The Rock. There's an unfortunate history in Newark over the last few years that someone who gets ejected from a bar or losing a fight returns with a gun. Or, someone took offense at the Mets losing 2 of 3 to the Marlins.
