It's that time, what you (or at least @JoeSoccerFan) has been waiting for, the 2014 Ed Kelly/Seamus McFadden I Don't Care About My Program Shit List of shame and apathy, presented, as always, by Ray Reid. This year's list starts off with 90 members. That's out of 202 D-I schools, not counting the service academies, which as always, are exempt till July, per DOD regs. So basically a staggering 45 percent of the men's soccer programs couldn't be bothered to get their recruits announced in the two months since national signing day. While some coaches just got hired, many of these guys have been there for 20 or 30 or in McFadden's case, 35 years. It just seems like many of the old-timers are just content to collect a paycheck and have no desire to make any extra effort to promote their program and thus the sport. Of course, they can always managed to get a release written to promote their camps or a book they're pushing or an award they got. Anything that promotes them or helps them make some money from camps, then a release manages to get written. But try and give the incoming players some publicity or try to make college soccer a bigger deal by making signing day an event? No can do! That takes more effort than they can bother to make. Ray Reid is the patron saint of this attitude which is why his name is on the marquee of this list. Seamus McFadden was included because of his tenure - second-longest tenured coach in D-I men's soccer - and because his program has been a national finalist before and just two years ago was in the quarterfinals. This is program that should be boasting about its new players. Instead, nada. Ed Kelly is included because he is in a major market in the best conference in college soccer and he has a program that has produced MLS, European first division and US national team players, one of whom might even play in a World Cup this summer. He's in a highly competitive conference and highly competitive market for sports media attention. He should be doing all he can to promote his program. Instead, nada. I considered others for the marquee of the Shit List. I thought about the likes of Joe Luxbacher, Sam Koch, Brian Tompkins and Greg Andrulis but they tended to remind me a an old dog that has gotten so fat it can't lick it's ass to clean itself and it's owner has to wipe it's butt. It's just become a sympathetic figure and no one appears to have the heart to put it out of its misery and instead its owner is just waiting for it to move on to a better place. Finally, there are some names that are surprisingly disappointing to be on this list. Tops among this is Sasho Cirovski, whom in the past I have credited with being among the best in college soccer at promoting the sport. Maybe it's because he's now in the Big Ten that he doesn't feel the need to announce his recruits as less than half of the conference's nine soccer-playing members have announced. It could be a conference thing. Other disappointments include Bob Warming - a Big Ten coach! - whom given his veteran status could easily have his lack of an announcement construed as ambivalence and apathy, and John Kerr and John Bluem (hey, another Big Ten coach). Finally, I don't want to hear the usual lame excuses from supporters of the teams on this list. It's frikkin' April. There isn't a D-I-bound player in America who doesn't know where he's playing soccer this fall. Almost all these kids - after being pressured by the programs - gave verbal commitments months, and in some cases, years ago. And signing day was over two months ago! And if you have a straggler or two over that is waiting on his academic clearance or whatever, then put out a list WITHOUT that player and add him when he's cleared. Many schools put out multiple releases. Nothing is stopping you're program from doing it. Except a coach with a shit left to give. So, without much more ado, here is the 2014 Ed Kelly/Seamus McFadden I Don't Care About My Program Shit List of shame and apathy, presented, as always, by Ray Reid. I listed foreign coaches because they make up about 30 percent of the list. These guys are the worst. They come to this county and feed of the teat of American soccer and make a comfortable living largely off their accent and an AD that doesn't no better and can't be bothered to promote their program's new players. The programs for this version of the list are listed based on the year they were hired. 1980 San Diego – Seamus McFadden (Ireland) 1984 Pittsburgh – Dr. Joe Luxbacher 1985 Boston University – Neil Roberts 1986 James Madison – Dr. Tom Martin 1987 Florida Atlantic – Kos Donev La Salle – Pat Farrell 1988 Boston College – Ed Kelly (Ireland) 1989 Gardner-Webb – Tony Setzer 1991 Massachusetts – Sam Koch St. John’s – Dr. Dave Masur UMBC – Pete Caringi 1993 Maryland – Sasho Cirovski (Macedonia/Canada) 1995 USC-Upstate – Dr. Greg Hooks 1996 Bradley – Jim DeRose Fairfield – Carl Rees (England) Princeton – Jim Barlow Yale – Brian Tompkins (England) 1997 Connecticut – Ray Reid Fairleigh Dickinson – Seth Roland Ohio State – John Bluem Robert Morris – Bill Denniston (Canada) 1998 Penn – Rudy Fuller UMKC – Rick Benben 1999 Cal State Northridge – Terry Davila Long Island – TJ Kostecky 2000 American – Todd West 2001 DePaul – Jay Glazer Liberty – Jeff Alder Temple – David MacWilliams 2003 Fordham – Jim McElderry Iona - Fernando Barboto 2004 Vermont – Jesse Cormier 2005 George Mason – Greg Andrulis Longwood – Jon Atkinson (England) Sacred Heart – Joe Barosso (Portugal) St. Bonaventure – Mel Mahler 2006 Cleveland State – Ali Kazemaini (Iran) Delaware – Ian Hennessy (Ireland) Houston Baptist – Steve Jones 2007 Denver – Bobby Muuss St. Francis (NY) – Tom Giovatto Stetson – Logan Fleck 2008 Duke – John Kerr, Jr. Virginia Military Institute – Richie Rose (England) 2009 Columbia – Kevin Anderson Cornell – Jaro Zawislan (Poland/Canada) Detroit – Nicholas Deren 2010 Campbell – Steve Armas Hartwick – John Scott (Scotland) Illinois-Chicago –Sean Phillips Penn State – Bob Warming Radford – Marc Reeves (England) Rutgers – Dan Donigan Saint Joseph’s – Don D’Ambra UNC-Asheville - Matt Kern UNC-Greensboro – Justin Maulin (South Africa) Wisconsin – John Trask Xavier – Andy Fleming 2011 Hartford – Tom Poitras Incarnate Word – Vince Martinez Massachusetts-Lowell – Christian Figueroa Nebraska-Omaha – Jason Mims North Florida – Derek Marinatos Rider – Charlie Inverso Saint Peter’s – Julian Richens (England) Stony Brook – Ryan Anatol (Trinidad) 2012 Charlotte – Kevin Langam (England) Kentucky – Johan Cedergren (Sweden) Manhattan – Jorden Scott (England) Providence – Craig Stewart (England) Seton Hall – Gerson Echeverry Wisconsin-Green Bay – Dan Popik Wisconsin-Milwaukee – Kris Kelderman 2013 Buffalo – Stu Riddle (England/New Zealand) Dartmouth – Chad Riley Harvard – Pieter Lehrer New Jersey Institute of Technology – Didier Orellana Oral Roberts – Ryan Bush Siena – Cesar Markovic UC Riverside – Tim Cupello 2014 Belmont – Bryan Green Cal State Bakersfield - Richie Grant (Ireland) Cal State Fullerton – George Kuntz Florida International – Scott Calabrese Jacksonville – Mauricio Ruiz Loyola-Maryland – Steve Nichols San Francisco – Eddie Soto UC Irvine –Chris Volk East Tennessee State (Bo Oshoniyi) and Howard (Philip Gyau) just hired their head coaches so I'm giving them a grace period of a month before adding them to the list.
Sandon - if I got this correct, last year you announced "the list" on May 2, and there were 91 teams who hadn't announced yet. This year "the list" appears on April 4, and has 90 teams. Progress?
Damn, I had a brain far there. DePaul's coach, of course, is Craig Blazer. And he needs to get off his ass and announce his recruits.
So when we started the Ray Reid Shit List several years ago (I can't remember what year we first did one; I want to say like 06 or 07 but I can't say for sure) the primary objective was to shame the programs and help that it would lead more of them to be proactive in announcing their recruits. I don't think it's made that much of a difference but based on some feedback I've gotten, it has made a small difference. Small. But we started this before Social Media really exploded and I have been slow to recognize its potential with regards to this potential issue. So, to that end, here are the Twitter accounts of the teams on the 2014 Ed Kelly/Seamus McFadden I Don't Care About My Program Shit List of shame and apathy, presented, as always, by Ray Reid. Let's take this list viral, baby. Post a link to this thread on the twitter accounts of the teams on the list. Let their followers and co-workers see about their apathy and attitude towards this issue and I bet we see some results. If I couldn't find a team-specific twitter account I just went with the athletic department's generic account. That doesn't mean they don't have one, just I didn't find it with a quick search. So anyone curious how these programs that never announce compare to their school's women's programs? Of the teams on the 2014 Ed Kelly/Seamus McFadden I Don't Care About My Program Shit List of shame and apathy, presented, as always, by Ray Reid (that have a women's program) about half have seen their women's counterparts announce. Hey kids, let's play a game! See if you can answer the following questions: Which is the only program in the American Athletic Conference not to have announced any new recruits? What's the only program from last year's Elite Eight not to have announced any new recruits? Which is the only national champion since 1997 not to have announced any new recruits?
Well, I suppose that's possible. But they do have to replace 5 starters from last year's team, so....
Maryland announced their class. http://www.umterps.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=29700&ATCLID=209492067

The updated 2014 Ed Kelly/Seamus McFadden I Don't Care About My Program Shit List of shame and apathy, presented, as always, by Ray Reid through the end of last week. We're down to 71 schools which means, sadly, that as of Memorial Day Weekend less than 70 percent - which is not passing at most colleges - of the schools have announced. That is, literally, a collective failure. Is it really fair to "punish" schools for not publishing their recruits when technically their class could be far from finished with 2 more months available for them to sign recruits? I mean I'm sure most schools aren't signing kids on August 1st to play in games starting 2 weeks later, but still. Shouldn't schools have at least till August to announce their recruits? I don't really care since my coach isn't on the list, just curious.
Football and basketball teams also can sign players that late - think they wait? It is a question of promoting the program. Now are there situations where the benefits of waiting can outweigh promotion, I'm sure its the case in programs. One thing that is interesting is that in theory, the player has to be getting athletic money to be announced. Since some schools such as Ivy's or service academies don't give aid, I'm kind of curious how the rules work for them.
The Men's Basketball signing period is only April 16th-May 21st ( this is the late signing period they also have an early one in the Fall during November, but no one can be signed in between the two periods. Most schools don't advertise their fall signing and wait till after the spring signing period to formerly announce their recruiting classes. If the signing period was shorter in Soccer I'd get the uproar more. I don't really have a dog in the fight since my school posts it's recruits, more just curious.
