I found his early playing years to be sorta interesting. The goods: 1. He actually doesn't have much contact at all with his father. His meeting the other side of his family, therefore, is quite interesting to me. 2. Education was a big part of his time at Hertha. 3. He found it cool to trade jerseys with Giorgio Chiellini and received the Captain's armband from Bocanegra after the Italy game. 4. Some quotes from David Wagner: "He has God-given instincts and always knows where the goal is." and "Alongside his qualities as a striker, he's also simply just a really good person." 5. States that one of his major weaknesses is still his technique. If the tempo is too high, he's prone to commit careless mistakes. The ball still has a tendency to jump a bit when he's receiving the ball, or he plays a sloppy ball when pushing forward. In one on one situations he also doesn't appear to have more than a simple step-over. 6. Article mentions some of the same qualms people have here in regards to his not having played at a higher level yet. Many are asking whether he'll be able to bring much to Rapid this year. The article mentions Julian Koch (defender), a promising prospect at BVB who also had similarly minded questions being lodged at him before he was recently loaned to MSV Duisburg (2. Bundesliga) for the year. Also mentions Lasse Sobiech (defender) (plays with SpVgg Greuther Fürth, who were recently promoted) and Daniel Ginczek (scored 5 goals with VfL Bochum this past year in the 2. Bundesliga) - both of whom continue to ply their trade at BVB, albeit as loanees. 7. Final quote from Lars Ricken, academy coordinator. "It's been a year since we took in Boyd from the Hertha squad, and today he is playing for the USMNT. He is just another example of how a strong performance with our second team can brighten a player's perspective."
This. If he doesn't make significant progress in this area within the next two years I think he will set his ceiling much lower than we'd all hope.
Um.... no? We currently have two forwards, three if you count Dempsey, who did pretty damn well in leagues better than the Austrian league in Altidore and Gomez. Boyd needs to have a really good year to justify his position above them.
What are your expectations? IMO he needs to score 15+ goals next season. Also I'm not sure if the Mexican league is that better than the Austrian league.
Um yes. Two forwards, heck even three, are not enough. At least four are needed and unfortunately no one other than Boyd has proven capable as of right now. Kljestan on the other hand is competing with Bradley, Jones (a soon-to-be Champions Leaguer player), etc. It is what it is.
How has Boyd proven himself? Zero goals in 4 appearances...wait, I guess for a US forward that is proving himself.
According to a new video on the Rapid Vienna website (registration required) it seems they've given Boyd the number 9 jersey: http://www.skrapid.at/195768.html?play=89168
Folks, the YA forum is for discussion of players' club careers. Please keep the discussion of their USMNT careers in the forums devoted to it. Thanks.
So....a possible Boyd vs. Bradley match (if the Bradley to Roma deal is indeed 100% accurate and set in stone).....I like this.
He doesn't have a profile yet, but I like the US flag next to his name. http://www.skrapid.at/9643.html
Now that they actually have a yank on their team, they can justify selling this shirt! http://www.rapidshop.at/products/TEXTILIEN/T-SHIRTS-POLOS/T-Shirt-We-acutell-see-you.html
