I need confirmation on a few dates. Please correct if wrong: Revs first home game was April 27, 1996. Last MLS game at Foxborough Stadium according to MLSnet was August 18th? The game on September 15th was cancelled. Did they ever wind up rescheduling it or was August 18th the last time the Revs played there? Also, the first game at Gillette (CMGI) was May 11, 2002 correct?
That looks right to me. The Revs website lists the 8/18/01 game against DCU as the last home game of the year. I thought that the US-Netherlands/Revs-Fire double header on Sun 5/19/02 was the first game at CMGI, but the Revs schedule says that we played Dallas at home the week before on 5/11/02.
In 2001 they went directly from September 10th to the playoffs, all remaining scheduled games were canceled and they seeded the playoffs based on points per game. MLS Cup was a date certain event, and by the time the travel issues cleared up there was no time to have the end of the season plus the playoffs before MLS Cup.
Yes, the Dallas game was the unofficial opening of CMGI field. I was there, but I didn't buy the T-shirt. Twellman scored both goals in a 2-0 win.
Last MLS game 8/18/01 Last Revs game 8/22/01 Open Cup Semifinals both those games involved playing DC Last US/Soccer game 10/07/01 vs Regge boyz
My memory is that was a limited opening rather than being unofficial. There were quite a few Patriots season ticket holders in the crowd, which made the first home game in almost nine months more subdued than it should have been.
The "official" opening was the Patriots first regular season game, even though the Revs had played several games and the Pats had played 2 pre-season games there.
Man oh man ... that was an amazing day. Both for what happened in the 'Boro ... and in another specific part of the world.
