Teams still with no game on 29.2 Europe Faroe Islands, Andorra, San Marino (unlikely they will play any of those teams) Lithuania, Armenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina (Lithuania and Armenia will probably play in a tournament in Cyprus, Bosnia is trying to fix up a match with Brazil) All other UEFA teams have matches confirmed for 29.2 and cannot play Ecuador. Americas Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Guatemala, Cuba, Jamaica, Guyana, Antigua & Barbuda, Honduras (possibly playing South Africa on 29.2) Colombia, mentioned above as a possible opponent for Ecuador, are playing Mexico on 29.2 Africa Teams playing in this month's African Cup of Nations are free on 29.2 (Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Morocco, Tunisia are best of these teams)
thanks for that last post! I think playing Brazil should be a priority. If not them, Ivory Coast or Senegal should be are targets. If we do another game against Honduras, Jamaica or Guatemala, somebody's head will roll. We have 2 massive qualifiers coming up, and our guys need to be tested against quality teams.
I fear the game at home vs. Colombia more then going to Buenos Aires. I'm a bit more confident that we can get a point in Buenos Aires again, then getting 3 points against Colombia at home. Colombia and Uruguay are always the hardest teams to get points from for our guys. We desperately need to play a friendly against a quality opponent. Some of our guys have never played against a top Nt before. JC Paredes, Eduardo Morante, Jaime Ayovi, Cristian Suarez, and some others have never had that experience. And the next two games are gonna be tough.
Colombia has Pekerman as a coach...big move by them. It should pay off after a few games of adjustment. Colombia is definitely a team to watch.
We will face the Honduras national team again, in a friendly slated for February , I can't wait!!!!!! (sarcasm) http://www.futbolecuador.com/stories/publica/25512
I'm gonna go against the grain on this one. As much as it would be exciting to go play against some world power teams, based on watching our team play for many years, I feel like their confidence is boosted by pounding some weaker teams (not that Honduras is weak, they are very close to our level). Also, since the players have very few opportunities to play together, it's much better to practice against a team where we will have plenty of possession and opportunities to attack, which will give our forwards and midfield the chance to gel better. Playing against countries that are too good will just give our guys practice in running around chasing the ball. This might help the defense, but it's not going to be good to go against Argentina after receiving a goleada, even if it's a friendly.
you know we've had enough of honduras and all those carribean teams when Rueda himself says we should look for a tougher opponent.
that is a good point. But it's when we lose the winnable friendlies that we all start scratching our heads. In all honesty, Ecuador's track record has generally been to underperform well in friendly games. We've lost some to some really random opponents, but when it matters, I think we can pull through. Yeah, I read his comments. If even he wants tougher opponents then I think there is a problem with planning if we can't get it.
Problem is that friendlies are all about making some money. Teams like England and Germany won't play us because they can get better friendlies. The teams that are on our level are really Eastern European countries or top African countries, and the only way to make money from those games is to have them in the US, where there are plenty of immigrants that will pay to see their team and hang out with their fellow countrymen for a few hours. I thought the game against Greece was a good idea...they should get teams like Poland to play us in Chicago or Korea in San Francisco. That would both fill stadiums and get us some decent competition.
Agreed. I think there's also time tie-ins to jersey sponsors, too. I think the Spain-Venezuela match was due to a binding Adidas sponsorship.
The only good thing about this match is that it's gonna be in Guayaquil! And it's the week after carnaval so I will most likely be there.
