all 3 of them still have something to prove. and until they do a buy back clause won't be helpful anyway and it doesn't sound like there is one for Fábio if his deal goes through

Looking at the fixture list, the first of 3 must-win games for us.

This is why I love this place. Jingoism and Chomsky in a match thread. I love it. Chomsky's Manufacturing Consent was an excellent read. For those who aren't sure if they want to read it, there's a documentary on Chomsky that is available on netflix that makes good viewing too.

Manufacturing Consent; Hegemony or Survival; and to a lesser extent, Profit Over People are all important works by one of the most important social critical theorists and linguists of the past century. I don't agree with a lot of it, but it's value is undeniable, and it's really interesting to examine fandom through those lenses. Thanks for bringing in that context Vince.

I feel like the philosophies of what it means to be a football fan today could very easily have its own thread.

Fans identifying with their team has been broken down by social scientists who study sports into a few categories

    BIRGing
    CORFing
    BIRFing
    CORSing

Basking in Reflected Glory - wearing your teams colours when they do well
Cutting Off Reflected Failure - disowning them when they don't do well
Basking in Reflected Failure - proudly supporting almost because of failure rather than inspite of
Cutting Off Reflected Success - pining for the bad old days

Most fans cycle through all of those behaviours at some point.

    Blasphemous!

Saw a picture of RVP walking with the team either to the hotel or the stadium, but just the way he looks suggest he's gonna at least play a small part today.

I would be upset if he started, but a 30 minute appearance at the end would be great to see. Ease him back in. Hopefully we see Mata from the beginning, he is the type of player you let loose immediately because he is likely on a psychological high - which can only be good for us.

Nothing like a midfield of Valencia, Jones, Giggs and Young to remind you that as great as Mata is, at the moment acquiring him is like adding a turbo-boasted engine to a sports car with no wheels. It's an enhancement, but there are still some minor issues to work out.

Also Van Persie should not be starting in his first game back.

Who else would he start with Nani out? Need to give Adnan a rest. I suppose you could argue for playing Welbeck or Kagawa out wide, but not their natural positions.

Moyes is talented though. He managed to make a team containing RvP and Mata look utter crap. Fantastic.
