Here are some nice overall statistics put together.

At age 16, North Korea’s Kim Su-Gyonh is the youngest player in this World Cup and is the only player born in 1995, the same year Birgit Prinz already played here first WC(also at the age of 16).

Young players (under 25) on their WC squads:

    Germany(9)-----------------------------USA (6)
    Almuth Schult(20)-------------------------Kelley O'Hara (22)
    Verena Faißt(22)--------------------------Tobin Heath (23)
    Babett Peter(23)--------------------------Lauren Cheney (23)
    Bianca Schmitt(21)------------------------Amy Rodriguez (24)
    Lira Bajramaj(23)--------------------------Alex Morgan (20)
    Kim Kulig(21)------------------------------Megan Rapinoe(24)
    Simone Laudehr(24)-----------------------
    Célia Okoyino da Mbabi(22)----------------
    Alexandra Popp(20)-----------------------

The USA rosters average age is one of the oldest with 26,7, but though Germany (14) have the most players in their squad with World Cup experience(USA 8, Brazil 12). IMO after this WWC I see the USA facing a shake-up. Itll be interesting to see how Germanys "young and wild" generation will be replacing: Prinz, Hingst, Grings, Müller, Angerer and Garefrekes.

    true stars who emerge?

Popp, Kulig, Morgan (if she gets time), Rincon, Iwabuchi

And depending on how the French and English teams do, they both have a few young guns who could break out, if the teams progress far.

Robels and Filingo could as well.

    Buehler? not on my list.

U.S. have to have somebody else as realistic break-out star other than Morgan, why not Buehler.

the lesser-known frenchwomen to watch will be M-L Délie, Eugénie Le Sommer, Wendie Renard... and perhaps Elodie Thomis: very, very fast, technical as well, but with an unfortunate tendancy to choke in her biggest matches.

after their exposure in the states the last couple of years i don't see how either Bompastor or Abily could be termed breakout players... in fact Sonia will likely retire after this WC.

Elodie is working hard on her technical skills in training but is not really good otherwise she would be as good as Marta.:p

Yeah if we forget what Marta calls a bad touch, Thomis actually call's dribbling, the Marta resemblance is quite clear .

I've never seen a player quite like Thomis before. A player able to dribble the ball while it was actually behind her .

I think marie-laure delie and celia okoyino da mbabi have made the best impression in the group stage ,the two are starter so one of the two should win the trophy.

By the way i didn't know okoyino da mbabi was born in germany (bonn if i am not wrong) from a cameroonian father and a FRENCH mother!!

Yeah Bonn, lives now in Koblenz. She actually speaks French quite well and knows most of the French girls. But to her its never been a doubt about which country she wants to play for she said. 2 goals out of 3 games, not bad !

Marie-Laure DELIE - no one talked about her coming into this tournament, she could be the 2 best striker behind marta with pace, gives France incredible pace and bite to their attack. If they get to the finals, she could be in the running for the gold boot.

Nobody guessed Anonman. She carried that team on her back, however controversial the team was, and I'm glad she'll be at Potsdam next season. She's only 22 and even though it sounds like we wont see her on the international stage for a while, she could still be a big impact in the Bundesliga now that she is on a contending team.

You forget me so fast, see last page where I said:

"a big yes to AnneMarie D"

OK, so I had the first name partially wrong.

I didn't honestly see Delie leading the line so well . So far she's far surpassed what I thought she could accomplish. Personally though, I think it's Necib that's the French break-out star.

Necib has been at the heart of everything nice about France this WWC. For the first time at the very elite level, Necib has looked fantastic on a consistent basis. Quite simply, Necib is having the tournament Bajramaj should have had so far.

@batfink: necib played the euro 2005 and 2009 ...she was a starter in 2009....so she can not be consider as a break-out star......

Predict the break-out stars for 2011 WWC

Very few people knew France were any good pre WWC, because they don't get to see such things as the euro championships, or eufa women's champions league.

Necib played little in 2005 and had a disappointing 2009, so I can see an argument for her as a 2011 break-out star. She has really showed her quality for the first time in a big tournament.

To be honest, I cant figure out who on the French team to praise most. To me Ablly and Bompastor are the two I know from the WPS, and they were both live wires today (Abily was FIFA woman-of-match despite the PK miss). But Bussaglia is another good one, and then who is the other black player who plays DF ? I might be wrong, I thought Reyand did not start today - and frankly I dont know almost the entire rest of the team's names anyway.

renard didn't play... her horrendous match against germany? her injury against nigeria which may have played a part in same? anyway, laure lepailleur did a huge job at RB and she was my WOTM.

the black defender you ask about is laura georges. very solid and experienced.

oh Yeah it is Georges, I thought she was very good. I have not seen enough games to pick up on each player, but I thought Lepailleur (she is #2 right?) was fooled by Jill Knight (if that is her name) leading to England's goal.

Really in this game France were such a mile ahead of England that I see them in no way inferior to USA or Brasil. It will be a great semi and I will be behind the new kid on the block.

Based on today's game France have nothing to fear form either team. France have had some of the tournaments best individual players.

France has had the most complete team-play so far in the tournament, outside maybe Japan and Sweden. The french midfield and attacking force will be hard to deal with for the US. Necib is a bonafide star; Delie is a menacing poacher in front of the goal; and Abily is a relentless workhorse. Huge revelations for the WWC.

I know Schelin had a rep way before this WWC, but wow, she has elevated her level since being in Lyon.

Me thinks a golden ball in in her future, no matter what her team does from hear on out?
