He played for a string of European clubs in that period, including a four-year stint at PSV Eindhoven. His tactical knowledge as a defender made him valuable team member in top European competitions even until he reached his late-thirties. Beside from his defending skills, he was also capable of using the ball and starting attacks from deep. He is the brother-in-law of fellow Romanian international Gheorghe Hagi.

    Gheorghe Hagi
Gheorghe Hagi (born 5 February 1965 in Săcele) is a former Romanian footballer. He was one of the best attacking midfielders in Europe during the 1980s and 1990s and is considered the greatest Romanian footballer of all time. Galatasaray fans called him 'Commandante' (The Commander) and the Romanians called him 'Regele' (The King).
Nicknamed "The Maradona of the Carpathians", he is considered a hero in his homeland. He has won his country's "Player of the Year" award six times, and is regarded as one of the best football players of the 20th century.
He played for the Romanian national team in three World Cups in 1990, 1994 and 1998, as well as in three European Football Championshipsin 1984, 1996 and 2000. He won a total of 125 caps for Romania, being ranked second after Dorinel Munteanu, and scored 35 goals, being ranked first.
In November 2003, to celebrate UEFA's Jubilee, he was selected as the Golden Player of Romania by the Romanian Football Federation as their most outstanding player of the past 50 years. Hagi is one of the few footballers to have played for both the Spanish rival clubs Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

Beautiful work by Alba! He has excellent timing and pace arriving from the back of the midfield.

Doesn't it seem like the defence is recovering their positions more quickly today, or is it just me?

Yes, we lacked sharpness. This half could have finished by 5 to 6 goals...

We've lacked quite a bit of it throughout this pre-season. Hopefully it doesn't carry on after this game otherwise it might be a similar story to last season when we dropped crucial points on the road.

Pedro needs to get more involved, same with Cesc. These two have a lot to prove after a disappointing campaign last year.

Nice goal from Afellay after a Xavi-like pass from Mascherano, 0-2.

Ends 2-0 in our favor. Good workout, now on to the real business.

I was pumped up for the game too, but I've noticed that sometimes - maybe it's only the friendlies - I just seem to watch the match, not commentating in the internetz simultaneously. But yeah: so great to see David Villa playing again (Fontas as well). I believe some people - even Barca fans - might have forgot how much of an asset Villa can be when fit. Then on the other hand, I'm sad to see Puyi already struggling with fitness - we just need that new CB (way more than a new DM). And oh, nice that Afellay scored - if he gets into a very confident mode, he just might offer us something valuable this season. Like a solid 8-10 goals Liga season and a few in CdR.

    BRING IN SOCIEDAD!
