As much as I'd like to, the answer is sadly no.

There's no way I'm gonna be able to scrape up enough money for it, and that says nothing about the match ticket.

If I should happen to hit the lottery before then, it'll become a possibility! :p

Superlative work, poly. Thanks for booting this worthless lump of LA colon sludge back to his own forum. An obvious troll and not such a bright one!

I'm probably being optimistic. We had only about 10,000 for the CONCACAF game on September 20th and about 9,000 out for the CONCACAF game on September 27th. Both days were dry and warm. And we had what looked to be less than 5,000 for the very rainy game on August 24th before it got called, and about 500 under for almost perfect weather the next morning.

So your right, half empty might be a stretch for the middle of winter ... three-quarters empty is probably a better guestimate based on past performance.

I'm not totally unconvinced that Montreal isn't a bigger soccer city. They certainly had very good support in the old NASL days. Their USL team drew much, much better crowds than Toronto ever drew, in the same league. We really shouldn't take their support for granted. It will be interested to see what they can draw in the Big O for their games this spring.

The 55,000 however is likely for a different reason. Montreal is somewhat provincial. It's media is quite isolated from the rest of the North American market - partially because of the language issues. With an event like that, the local media would talk it up in a manner that you won't see in Toronto. The game sold itself. In the last week or two before the game, the media really talked up how many seats had been sold, and the rest sold themselves. You have to understand how rare an event is at the Big O, and Montrealers are oddly nostalgic about the place.

Bang on! Montreal is a different city than Toronto...does not make one better or worse...but they are different and I don't understand why people seem to have a "they sold 55k tickets we should be able to too"....their attendance on that day and our's on this day coming are two totally unrelated events.

Two unrelated events? The game at the big O was the CONCACAF Champions League quarter-finals and it was played there because the weather in Montreal in March is too cold to play outdoors. This is EXACTLY the same event.

I am quite familiar with Quebec's uniqueness, I've lived there although not in Montreal. Yes, there is some truth in saying that local media has a greater influence because of the language difference. I disagree with the "nostalgia" for events at the big O. The place is an eyesore. It's ugly and it's widely regarded as a colossal waste of money. There have been recent newspaper reports about the building's future (well to be honest there have been for the last decade since the Expos left) and the consensus is that it would be too expensive to demolish it so revitalization is necessary but the image Montrealers have of it is so negative that it would be tough to secure funding for any plan and so there's eternal talk of what should be done with the whole Olympic park area. Even strolling outside of the stadium is so dreadful an experience and if it was feasible, most Montrealers would choose demolition without a second thought. There's nostalgia for the Expos, not for the stadium.

Montreal is a very different city than Toronto but not with sports. Both are obsessed with their NHL team to the point where other sports and even lower levels of hockey are drowned out. Both support other "events" rather than other sports. The Blue Jays filled the SkyDome when it was perceived as a place where everyone wanted to be seen, it was sexy to attend a Blue Jays game. Both markets deserted baseball although the Jays are possibly enjoying somewhat of a resurgence. Some here would say that we've seen this same effect with TFC - it was a place you wanted to be seen in the first couple of years and now that's wearing off. That's why this game is so important from a marketing standpoint. A successful event here would not only be a cool experience this once, it could re-establish TFC games as "the place to be" for the next couple of years.

Look at the Alouettes - they were on the verge of folding playing out of Olympic Stadium until a freak scheduling error forced them to find a new venue for one game, everyone loved the initimacy of playing at McGill and CFL football is now a marquee sporting event in the city when it was dead not too long ago. They're even able to go back to the big O for playoff games and fill the stadium to make up for lost revenue in the smaller venue during the season. Even non-football fans go to Alouettes game because it's a place to be seen, an event rather than a game.

Toronto is very similar to Montreal in terms of it's enthusiastic support for what are perceived to be marquee events and completely deserting teams and sports once the novelty wears off or if they aren't winning on the field. As a single one-time event, if hyped in the right way, they'll be turning people away because everyone will want to be there. With no marketing, a crowd of under 10,000. I disagree with those that estimate 25000. This will be either wildly successful or disastrous. This needs to be perceived as an event, a special occasion and a place where the "who's who" wants to be that day. If hyped up with special event status, easy sell-out.

This isn't a scientific poll or anything, but I am noticing amongst the people that I know far more interest in this game than they may usually have. Most that I know haven't gone to any NCC/CCL matches in the past but most have said that they're going to attend this one.

I have a good feeling about the attendance. Probably not full, but I think that 30k is a good possibility.

I must spread some rep around before I can rep u again. Until then you would do well to stay out of these threads. You have already made it clear that you have no intent to contribute anything to our discussion. You've already successfully made your own board a hostile place where neither your own fans or opposing fans can freely voice their oppinions, and we prefer that our thread doesn't turn into what yours has

You are welcome to discuss this game with us here, but any future posts like the edited one will be considered trolling. For anything beyond friendly banter, please head to MLS: Fan Rivalries.

I think we can all tolerate differing opinions here, and to a point we let things go. If things go sideways please report problematic posts to alert us mods.

Yep. I'm definitely going, as are a number of my friends. I've been talking about this game informally and there is a higher level of interest from people who aren't plugged-in about TFC.

It's worth considering that Beckham re-signing will have a nice effect on ticket sales too.

So tickets have gone on sale today, I don't know if it's for season ticket holders only or if the general public can buy now too. 8 of us going, so only another 49,992 to go! ;)

It goes on sale to the General Public this Friday at 11am eastern time.

I hear that just about all the $19 seats are sold.

STH and Supporters only as far as I know.

Paul Beirne was tweeting 3 hours ago that the $19 tickets were almost sold out. On one supporters board, someone said that they'd heard that 10,000 tickets has already been sold.

They are down to the last few supporters section seats, should be sold out tonight or some time tomorrow, not bad for going on sale just after 3pm today for the supporters section.
The business rep for TFC, Paul B twittered that if sales keep at this pace only 500's will be left by Friday, knock on wood! :D

Just heard that the $55 ($69) ones have sold out.

OK, so we now know that most of the season ticket holders are coming out for this. Now we just need everybody else. :)
