I am trying to keep an open mind and a positive attitude….ya me, that’s right! The Revs have a new, young, energetic, enthusiastic yet inexperienced coach. In the next two month we have the re-entry draft and the super draft. We are picking 2nd in the Re-entry and 3rd in the super draft and 2 of the top 22 picks. From all the articles I have read so far, these seem to be the top players right now in no particular order: Kelyn Rowe Mid 5’8 150 Darren Mattock F 6’0 165 Enzo Martinez Mid 5’7 145 Andrew Wenger D/M 6’ 185 Billy Schuler F 5’11 170 Austin Berry D 6’2 190 Dillon Powers D 5’11 172 If they don’t pull a fast one, one of the above will most likely be a Rev next year. No information on the Re-Entry draft as yet but Josh Wolff, Tyrone Marshall and Corey Gibbs were really the only success stories that came out of Phase 2 out of the 13 players selected. Cochrane played a lot of minutes and for him personally it was great but the outcome of that signing was not a success for the Revs. Bottom line, the Re-entry draft should not really be counted on as a viable means of acquiring good talent. Expansion Draft is tomorrow. It’s possible the Revs could lose their DP in the draft. According to McCarthy, the Revs might lose him anyway regardless. What we know is the Revs should have some money to bring in some new talent. Hopefully not aged past their prime has beens. They have hopefully learned their lesson from last season with the French Connection. We should hear about scouting trips in the next few weeks as well as plans for training camp which is about 3 months away. You have to think that Burns and Bilello are under the gun this year…though you would have thought that after this past season. The Krafts if they care, can’t treat this year like the last few. They are losing season ticket holders as well as face with MLS. Not to be negative but I have my doubts that a stadium deal is even as close as 12 months away. Its not a priority. So in the next 3 months, they need to add players and probably cut a few. What I hope to see are signings before camp and trialists during camp. I expect nothing less. From now until the start of camp, I pledge not to be negative towards this team for anything. After the start of camp and there have been no additions other than draft picks……its open season. WHO IS WITH ME?
Seriously? People find this post too long to read? Wow. Rep to firstshirt for taking the time to write out his thoughts that take, maybe, 120 seconds to read. I agree the Re-Entry draft isn't likely to produce much, but the college draft is promising. I think we have a better chance of finding a defender who can help immediately rather than an attacker. And we need at least one starting back, if not two. I think we should draft the best defenders available and look on the market for established attackers -- one cm, on wing and one striker (whether we lose Caraglio or not). edit: whoops. "have to spread rep . . ."
I think we should pick-up Austin Berry and Dillion Powers ... and get them to swap names. Dillion Berry and Austin Powers. Yeah Baby!
draft won't help this team. $$ will. Go out and get some talent to give these draft picks a chance to evolve. Otherwise it could be a downgrade in talent for some coming from Div. I schools.
Said it before... the Revs have a real chance to take a quantum leap forward next year. I think Charlie Davies is in play for the Revs via trade, should they want him. I love each of the expected top three picks in the draft (Mattocks, Wenger, Rowe). They've got the #3 spot in the order for returning players from Europe. They've got the #2 pick in the Re-Entry Draft. That's a lot of ways to acquire players who can make an impact without even dipping a toe in the international market.
The guy who might slip from the top three is Rowe. If Wenger and Mattocks are off the board when the Revs pick it will make for an interesting selection. Enzo Martinez could emerge as the top playmaker in the draft ahead of Rowe. Also, Brian Span has Superman athleticism, which certainly seemed to help C.J. Sapong this year.
Had a good, but not great season. There's some question as to whether his game will translate in the pros. From what I'm gathering Wenger has emerged as the consensus top pick.
Thats what I have been reading as well. Martinez looks to be more consistant although he is not the biggest guy. At 5'7 145 he is a slightly bigger Fagundez
I'd say go after Charlie only if Caraglio doesn't come back, after a hot start Davies really burnt out toward the end of the year and is basically an overpriced MLS-average forward, maybe sub-Mike Magee. I would like to see the Revs attempt a trade this year for some veteran pieces, possibly a sign-and-trade for Shalrie (if that's possible in MLS). Re-Entry Draft could have some good talent - there were some solid players on the unprotected list, which is might be a good indicator on who will be available in the Re-Entry Draft. My main concern is it's going to be slim pickings on the returning US Nat pool this year...last year might have been an anomaly with the volume of players who came to MLS. However, if Lee Nguyen comes back, that might be an interesting pickup. I don't see Parkhurst coming back now that it seems MLS doesn't draw Klinsmann's attention unless you're Kyle Beckerman or Brek Shea. His Denmark team is consistently strong and in European competitions, and the salary is probably comparable if not higher.
Hopefully not. Over the last 3 years the top 3 picks have produced decent MLS players 2011 Salgado Nagbe Kitchen 2010 Mwanga Tchani Opara 2009 Zakuani Cronin Gonzales All of these would most likely start for the Revs or are better than the Revs backups. If history repeats, the Revs should get a decent player.
