I know its still the start of the season, but for being one of the relegation favorites Pompey are doing well. I know Bolton started well when they were promoted, and were even top of the league at one stage, but for Pompey I think its different. If they keep playing as well as they are now, mid-table wouldn't be too far off for them.
I have thought for some time that the best we could hope for is a Ipswich like year. A few years ago Town was promoted and did great, won a place in Europe their first year up. This side and Ipswich have alot in common. An older team, well coached, and an unknown side in alot of ways to the EPL establisment. We just have to avoid that whole relegation thing a year later. But let's not get ahead of ourselves let's get to 40 points before we start looking at mid-table or anthing else.
It all depends upon injuries & suspensions Pompey's squad is very small in comparison to many of the other clubs. The start they've made has been excellent apart maybe from the draw at Wolves, & these early season points are absolutely crucial to a small sqaud. As pitches get heavier during winter, injuries tend to ramp up, to say nothing of the general wear & tear players experience. Berger's not due back until mid October, as a case in point. One factor the blues dont need is silly suspensions from poor discipline, but i think theyve got too many clever heads on the pitch for that to be an issue. Getting draws at Man City & Arsenal are hugely creditable, but the season depends upon home form. I really like Fratton Park, its compact, and intimidating for opposing players. Wide players dont have the space available at many other grounds, so many of the real flair players are in theory at something of a disadvantage. Thats the theory anyway! One route Pompey wont take is the financial shambles experienced by Ipswich since they were relegated. Many of their big contracts are for 1 year only, so the wage bill isnt going to threaten the club if they do go down. cmon you blues
we will be fine - Berger is back for tomorrows game against Charlton and Mathew taylor ( Future England :Left Midfielder) has returned ! Rest assured we wont go down !
