One thing we shouldn't forget, though Keane didn't have his scoring boots on besides his goal, he pretty much created most of our chances with his movement and link play. Donovan and Keane played well off each other last season but most of those moves wouldn't have been possible with another MLS forward. Donovan on form matches him but I'll put Keane #1 until he decides to get back down to business. Today a goal, assist, 2 key passes and one accurate through ball. Just another day at the office.
''You see the quality that he has,'' said Keane, who played a role in all three of Magee's goals. ''The three goals that he scored were exceptional goals ... It was one of those things. Sometimes you just hit everything and it hits the back of the net. Mikey had one of those days today.''
as much as I love Magic Mike, its clear that Keane is the answer. lets all be serious for a moment...
I think it is that ridiculous picture of Bruce Arena playing goal in short-shorts. Players come and go (mostly to Cambodia and Paris) but that picture is seared into the retinas of every Galaxy fan on BigSoccer. Thinking about it calls up positive energy for the team. We never had a fantastic picture like that for Gullit or Yallop. Think about it. That's the difference.
The obvious answer is me. I mean, the Galaxy have won 4 MLS Cups since I've come on board. None of those other 3 guys in the poll can claim that....
Keeeeeeeene! A great soccer brain makes everyone else look good around him. I get hyped every time the ball goes to him.
I voted Magee because I am no apostate. But I really think Juninho belongs in this conversation. He runs shit back there. Actually, I think I'd like to see Keano, Juninho and Gonzo as the three choices. Each of them anchors their line, each of them makes the players around them better. But maybe we have different ideas of what a team's Talisman is.
Well, to be serious about it, it's a tough call because we might be at the changing of the guard -- obviously Donovan was the glue that held this team together for a looooong time. But perhaps that time is up. And Keane is probably the one who takes that torch, for now. But if you follow the mantra that "Defense wins championships" I might argue that the actual talisman of this team (and the player who's arrival actually coincided with our current run of 4 years of excellence) isn't listed in this poll... Hint: His name rhymes with Monzilla....
playas only club. I guess I should have added Juninho and Omar in hindsight. Also, maybe I shouldn't have posted this poll so soon after the Chicago game.
Are we talking about just now/this season? Because if so, yeah Juni, Gonzilla, Keane and Magee could all have arguments made for them and Landon would have no chance. But when Landon's played, has he not been a huge part of our success?
Look the question isn't team leader or MVP, its talisman, and beyond a doubt, there's no point for this poll. That's Mike Magee. Donovan, and Gonzalez, and more recently Keane, have been unquestionably game changers for us - the guys the opposition game plans against and who have consistently lived up to those considerations. And they've come up big all season long and in the big games too. But Mike Magee has scored playoff goals that have lifted us from despair, more than once and yet ... he's no a national team player, not one person is counting on him to win us an MLS cup, and even we, the Galaxy faithful are surprised when he delivers. again. and again. Perhaps after this season we will expect him to deliver and then we will have to reevaluate.
Come Mister Talis Man, Tally Me Campeones! One Cup, Two Cup, Three Cup, FOUR!! (Playoffs Come and We Win More Cups) One Cup, Two Cup, Three Cup FOUR!! (Playoffs Come and We Win More Cups)
