I'm a big fan of that system because it essentially satisfies almost all parties who have long wanted changes made to the MLS playoff system. Unfortunately the higher seed argument (which is perhaps the loudest) is also the only one that MLS refuses to ever address even when directly asked about it. We have to face it, they just do not want to give higher seeds a true advantage in the playoffs for whatever reason.

Because that would not be "consistent with CONCACAF and FIFA practice," which has always been critically important to MLS.

Unlike those footballing infidels in Belgium who just say "F*** FIFA and f*** UEFA, we're doing a group-stage playoffs!" MLS is more in line with FIFA than Belgium. And the next obvious step to separate ourself from losers who don't conform to FIFA or their own confederations is to institute a system of promotion and relegation. *

*The above referenced is not an actual argument for promotion and relegation but is instead an example of how ridiculous it is for MLS to claim that they are actually worried about being in-line with FIFA and CONCACAF on anything,... including the fact that they're not actually in-line with how other leagues in FIFA handle playoffs but rather a half-assed attempt to appear in line with confederation tournaments. The statement, views, and opinions released by MLS regarding this subject are those of it's spin marketing department, and are not endorsed by, nor do they necessarily reflect, the actual opinions of Soccer United Marketing, Major League Soccer, or it's owner/operators.
