Did you see the match SupaMario, anything good from it? By the way, we're not eliminated yet, if math doesn't fail me: If Netherlands(Plays against Mexico) and Canada(Plays against Rwanda) don't win their matches or if one of them wins and Ecuador loses(Plays against Burkina Faso) we'll qualify to the round of 16. Another possibilities include Uzbekistan(Plays against Czech Republic) losing 2-0 or Australia(Plays against Denmark) losing 4-0.

Ocampos was talented again, as I said in the River forum, reminds me of a young Di Maria. Has a lot of tricks and flicks, but does too much(selfish at times). Lets hope he can continue to grow. My favorite player of the match was Gaspar Iñíguez, the kid is solid on the ball and has a lot of Masche and Banega's skills can destroy in the middle and have trickery. He looked liked our best player on the pitch for us, a classic #5. I think he is one to really look at. We will probably see more him with Argentino Juniors in the near future. Nicolás Sequeira who was the GK was a utter disaster, he could not hold onto the ball, let rebound after rebound, i believe 2 of the goals came off rebounds.

Highlights, and we probably have the goal of the tourney. Whatever good that is.

Hmm. Interesting what you point about Iñíguez against Jamaica I thought his marking was a bit off, and that was what the team lacked, also surprised about Sequeira he was fine against Jamaica and by what they said he was okay against France and the 3 goals weren't really his fault.

Well Netherlands lost with Mexico, that means if Canada ties with Rwanda we qualify to the next round, though I think that other combinations of results would qualify us.

Looking a bit further into I found very weird results so far this tournament mostly involving european teams, then looking a bit further into i realized something, for the most part european sides at this age group are very inconsistent. Maybe it's because the European U17 Championship(It was U16 until 2002) is played on a yearly basis, like the U19 one(Which in even years it decides who qualifies to the U20 World Cup), and the qualifiers are a bit rougher than the adults one considering that that're only 8 teams make it to the tournament(Compared to the 16 of the adults), besides the Soviet Union in 1987, only two europeans won U17 World Cups, France in 2001 and Switzerland in 2009, however note that France only played four(Out of fourteen) U17 World Cups(1987, 2001, 2007 and the current one 2011) and Switzerland only ever qualified to the one they won in 2009. With other teams you have that Netherlands who always seem to be doing an interest job developing players only qualified to three U17 World Cups(2005, 2009 and 2011). The ones with the most appareances are Spain(This year they didn't even qualify to the U17 European Championship) with eight(In three they got to be a finalist) and Germany with nine(Finalist only once in the very first U17 World Cup in 1985 as West Germany, back then it was U16). Note the case of Italy(Played six U17 World Cups), of the last six U17 European Championship only qualified to two(2009 and 2010). So basically while only a handful teams get to play with teams around the world once every two years, they're playing competitive matches constantly, for instance the first part of the qualifiers(It's divded in two, the First Round and the Elite Round) for the U17 European Championship 2012 begins in September.

Iñíguez was really good yesterday, I liked him very much. Yeah and on the part of the the Europeans and the tourneys, I don't get it very much. What is the point of U21 Euro tourney when a U20 tourney is going to play within a month from each other. I find it confusing and a bit annoying.

Canada tied today, so does that mean we go through?

Yes by the time being we'll play England in the Round of 16. They defeated Rwanda 2-0, tied 2-2 with Canada with that goal made by the canadian goalkeeper and defeated Uruguay 2-0, which is weird because Uruguay destroyed Canada on the first match and defeated Rwanda just 1-0 and then Rwanda had today's 0-0 tie with Canada, quite an unpredictable group. The match will be played in Pachuca with an altitude of 2,000m, note that England has played two of their group matches in there.

I would love it if we could beat England, don't particularly care what happens after that, but having seen this team in action I just can't see that happening. The defence is all over the place and whilst I don't wish to be curel to a young kid, but you could probably find a better goalkeeper if you just went down to the local park and picked someone at random.

So much bashing on Sequeira for a single match, when he still had good matches against France and Jamaica... And it could be worse like what happened to England.

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKe89bX1RYU]The canadian keeper scores![/ame]

Not only the english keeper allowed the ball to bounce like that but note how the other players didn't even press on the canadian keeper and pretty much allowed him to make his way to the midfield.

Well the kids tied 1-1 with England and lost 3-2 on penalties. A real pity because the team played better than what I saw against Jamaica, the match was a bit messed up because it was being played in a downpour(Awful for the keepers the english keeper almost got injured doing a goal kick in the first half), while the pitch was okay for the most part there were a couple of puddles here and there, and it's also a pity because the team started winning and England's equalizer came from a kind of fluke goal in which a centre back failed to clear the ball and that messed the keeper to stop it from going in. Overall I think that Garre was right in one aspect, individually the players are fine for the most part, as a team they need to improve.

Ahh a shame, did not get a chance to watch it but I did not think we were going to do anything great here anyways. We never do well at the U17's. We will see in a couple years what players pops out and etc.

I am looking forward seeing the U20's now, wonder if Lamela and Iturbe will be on the pitch together? And if Bruna,Icardi will get called up(I doubt but who knows). You know they say the great ones come in 2's . Our 95/97 generation that gave us Sorin,Cambiasso,Roman,Aimar,Samuel(Maybe more 97 than 95). 05/07 gave us Zabaleta,Kun,Lio,Gago,Yacob,Banega. I know I am leaving out names but this is off top of my head. Lets see what happens this time in Colombia.

Lamela will probably be the most talked about player in the tourney. Maybe him and Iturbe. Brazil is taking Neymar and Lucas to the Copa and not very familiar with the rest of the U20 squad they have. and we are in a group with Mexico,England,North Korea. I see the North Koreans more and more, they seem to qualify in all these tourneys, good for them. Good old Mexico again, is there a tourney that we DO NOT play them at any level? Played them in the 04 Copa America,05 Confederations Cup,06 WC, 07 Copa America, 07 U20 WC,2010 WC. England, I guess they plan not to bring some of their bigger names, okay I guess they will never learn.

    Should be interesting and fun.

Garre deserves a huge amount of blame.

That was awful anti Argentine football. Long balls from the fullbacks.Aimless passes. Especially on a skiddy greasy surface they are only bound to run away. When we looked best it was with short passes and controlling the ball.

Irrespective of weather conditions that is the way to go and more so in such weather making the opposition tire even more on a heavy surface.

Galvan should have saved the weak shot but seemed more distracted by the defender coming across him.

Ocampos was isolated for most of the game when he is one of the best players rarely giving the ball away and so why was Paredes not picked ? There was a gaping hole in the midfield one which might be replicated at full senior level.

Allione missed a great chance and Ferreira typified some of the stupid play. They might as well give a seperate ball to him. I hope when he gets back to Velez that someone tells him in order to utilize his skill he needs to get his head up. Such as when he shot wildly when Ocampos was bursting through.Did he bother to hold the ball up.Did he hell.

Losing to Japan, France scraping a win over Jamaica is not great or losing to a mediocre England side. But these things happen at u17 level. What was disturbing was the lack of semblance of passing play and a style distinctly anti Argentine.

I have no doubt Germany u17 will thump England and show Garre up for what he is. A fraud. He and Perazzo should not be coaching the future. Bring back Tocalli and Pekerman ASAP.

What was worrying for instance was that when they needed to pass out of defence the ball was hoofed up the pitch aimlessly and with only Ocampos up there working himself into the ground the ball came back pretty quickly.

When we need to hoof it they tried to pass it out of defence.

There are bright individual talents headed by Andrada, Ocampos, Pugh, Iniguez , Zarate but the coaching they received and preperation was not ideal.

And why oh why was Paredes left out. Is Garre from the Batista school of coaching. Sometimes the creative midfielder by the very nature of his play may try something risky. If it comes off brilliant. Pastore or Paredes ...

Yes leave the fulcrum of the side out. Marvellous.

The German Under 17 team look really strong (although in the European Under 17 championship they were outclassed by Holland twice) and should hammer this mediocre England team. France also look very strong. But I agree with Albiceleste2010, the worrying thing was not losing, although it's nice to win at this level, it's not the be all and end all, the dissapointing thing was the poor quality of football played by Argentina. Poor defending, poor goalkeeping, no creativity, no pattern of play, no passing, just very dissapointing.

Iturbe and Lamela playing in the same side is something to look forward to.

Yeah, so they can be the disrespected just because like it was before, so now we have this. But evidently the importance of the youth teams wasn't measured correctly, because with the successfull youth teams we didn't get to win anything important, aka a World Cup.

    Paredes, like Andrada were injured.

Lamela, Iturbe and Bruna will be called up for the U20.

Bruna seems an odd choice all things considered. Anyway the point is that those youngsters were brought into a system that led to more of them making it to the senior seleccion.

I do regard the u17 more of a developmental thing than anything else but the way they were playing was dreadful.

The u20 is more indicative of who will make it eventually and some of the recent results have been disappointing. Other nations are placing more and more emphasis on this side of things as a way of grooming potential stars of their national sides for the future.

The way it is being handled at present ie the preperation for the u17 WC seems slapdash and haphazard.

When you get to these events you want to be your best and show your best because after all you are representing the nation.

Of course sucess at youth level does not translate into a World Cup win in the future but it's still an important yardstick as to the progress you are making and a reflection of the state of youth football in the country.

Uruguay's recent improvement in senior football is mirrored by their improvement in youth football.

More likely but not always, from the group if Qatar '95 only Sorin made it the majority didn't do much on the club stage even. And for the U17s some that have acceptable performances don't even make it to the U20.

Duh, what's the purpose of the youth teams if it isn't that?

Probably, they also had complications for example the whole issue with the ashes got some friendlies cancelled and made them arrive to Monterrey one day before their match.

Then again look at the batch of youth football that produced recent improvement in the senior side for Uruguay, what were our youths doing back then? Weren't they better? Well as seniors they didn't do better as they did as youths.

Not sure if it is an odd choice, the kid might be ready to play top flight football coming this season. I know we are suppose to judge players on a few minute clips but the kid seems to have great foot on him and takes FK's really well. I know he is coming off an injury but a few years ago he was written about as one of the better young prospects of the world. So, lets see what happens. If he does well then all for it.

He had done well in fits and starts but what worries me he has never really been given an oppurtunity with the senior side and with players coming in like the donkey Henderson I don't think he will.

He ought to move to a club where he will get the chance to play. Reserve football for this period 18-20 years is not good enough for a talent like him.

It would be nice if such young players received better advice and their agents were more interested in their development rather than seeing how much money they can make from them.

Maybe we have been spoiled when it comes to youtube videos of teenage prodigies....but Bruna really doesn't look that impressive at all to me. Furthermore we are pretty stacked in the forward department, so I don't think he'll be making too many inroads there. He's also short, so unless he has phenomenal ball skills (better than Banega or Pastore?) which I haven't seen, I don't see him making the grade. I don't think great foot will cut it at this level.

Lamela does look like the real deal though.

Of course that is the aim of youth football. But regardless of your dismissal of the point is that national associations are placing more emphasis on youth programmes in terms of financial investment, nutrition, talent identification to an even greater level than before just to gain that possible advantage in later years.

Take Germany and France for instance. The clubs are always in touch with the DFB and FFF. They provide comprehensive reports on their academies, they scout all over the place, they set kids on the right track from a very early age and in return the associations provide extensive funds for coaching, conditioning etc etc.

Whereas in the past it used to be fairly haphazard it is getting more and more rigorous. Do you see this happening in Argentina ?

And with Uruguay having such a small population it show their investment in the youth side of things and their talent identification and the process whereby those youths are turned into full internationals is more efficient and rigorous.

Sure, still with our good youth players we haven't won anything. And I don't know how you know where they do what and where they don't. I would agree on the coaching aspects though, it would seem that the majority of the players that retired 10 or 15 years ago and became coaches are stuck in time, it's true they should've been provided something they don't seem to care about it either.

    I read around a bit amigo. :)

We cannot afford to stand still because in time other nations will catch up. You could argue in a way with the results at this Copa other teams are certainly defending better as a unit or some of the 'bigger' sides are a tad rusty.
