Apart from Garrincha (maybe), I like the choice of 'WS' chief editor Gavin Hamilton Yashin, Cafu, Moore, Charles, Facchetti, Garrincha, Cruyff, Di Stefano, Maradona, Pele, Van Basten A shame that clueless figure Jaap de Groot was the representative for the Netherlands. I see that he found a place for his Iniesta-agenda.
I quite like Hamilton's team too. Van Basten and Pele seems to me a dream partnership in a lot of ways. Is it just Glanville who voted in 1981 and in this survey too?
Changes to Glanville's team from 1981: Breitner in for Hapgood. Garrincha over Matthews (think he said Garrincha or Matthews in 1981?). Cruyff in (for Matthews?, or the magazine missed off Cruyff or even another player by mistake in 1981). Maradona in for Puskas. Messi in for Best. So, he still includes Yashin, Victor Rodriguez Andrade, Beckenbauer, Varela, Di Stefano and Pele(and maybe Cruyff if he was in his last team but missed off - he played great in the 80's for a few seasons back in the Netherlands, but surely he is in on the basis of his play in the 70's and possibly the 60's too; even though his play in the 80's gave more credence to his greatness as a midfielder I suppose - I guess he was in Glanville's 1981 team along with either Garrincha or Matthews).
Yashin is swapped for Banks. Hapgood, Puskas and Best are out. Maradona, Messi, Cruijff and Breitner are in; like you said. His 1981 choice features 10 names. Maybe Cruijff was the 11th name, incidentally not printed, but Glanville was never a particularly big fan of him (although he insisted in his pieces that he was the best, until 1979). Would not bet my wallet on it.
Oh yeah sorry - I glossed over that, probably assuming he wouldn't change the goalkeeper. Looking at his top 100 (from about 1997?) he had Yashin at 32 and Banks at 34 so didn't see much to seperate them it seems.
How someone who was rarely a World XI player (on one of the least competition positions) during his career, suddenly is good enough for the Alltime XI remains a mystery.
I see that they now added the vote totals (not originally included): http://www.worldsoccer.com/features/the-greatest-xi-how-the-panel-voted The second and third right-back were also Brazilians (Carlos Alberto and Djalma Santos). In the 1981 vote it was the other way around, Santos over Carlos Alberto although the Brazilian contingent preferred back then Alberto as well. Personally a bit disappointed that Rijkaard only got one vote (compared with his Milan buddies). Only 11 votes for Puskas also feels strange.
BTW, I also have one from 1985, I think. From the 'international football (year)book'. Will post that the next week or the week after.
well no many knew Puskas when he was at his best, but often found his games in his older days at Real (59-65) when he was 31 to 36 ... Yet he showed no sign of being inferior to Di Stefano, Kopa Gento ... He was a bit unlucky at WC54 for being injured (not fully fit) there ... but he gotta play (like Maradona at WC90). Imagine IF his strike in the final (to make 3-3) in last few minutes was NOT UNFAIRLY called for OFFSIDE? He could have won the very first WC for Hungary? and he could very well be placed higher than Di Stefano and Cruijff - I THINK
Yeah G. Banks got a great stats (and most Europeans watched his games live back then) with some doc and record by EPL, whereas Yashin's footage was so limitted for he played earlier, and he played for USSR ... (a RED country LOL no record in those NT) in term of stats, I think Banks even got betetr stats than Yashin (in clean sheets, goals allowed per games ....) but Yashin was so famous for his "unique style" - a libero, a leader, a commander, a "spiderman" between the posts
Thought I'd bump this thread again. On a similar note to what is bolded - Riva got 5 votes, all from Italy and Fritz Walter got 2 both from Germany. Netzer got a vote from England and Overath one from Peru and it's interesting to note that in Word Soccer's Player of the Century poll in 1999 Walter and Overath were included by the magazine in their 100 player guide list, but Netzer in their 2nd guidelist IIRC (that is on the Sheep Draft 1 thread, as comme posted it there I remember); however Netzer scored enough points to make the readers 100 while the other two had some votes but were outside it. Similar case for Riva and Rivera, with Rivera being the magazines choice for the first 100 but Riva making the readers 100. They are more different re: positions on the pitch though which would be a factor for the teams on this thread - the Italian journalists seem to pick Riva as left forward mostly I think which is also a position another of World Soccer's 100 Blokhin could have conceivably been put in by 1981 - again, fellow Eastern European Boniek made the readers 100 while he didn't and Boniek was in the 2nd guidelist of World Soccer - not surprising he wouldn't get any mentions pre 1982 WC though I'd say. As far as those players go, these had inclusions in World Soccer's recent worldwide poll: http://www.worldsoccer.com/features/the-greatest-xi-how-the-panel-voted Riva one again from Italy, Blokhin one each from France and Yemen, and Netzer one from Hungary. I don't think any of them made the first or second teams in the World Sports poll in 1970 did they Puck (I forget who was left winger in second team; cos Best was put down as number 10 in that team IIRC)? If you can't remember I'll check later (Gento was in first team from combined votes IIRC; don't think Riva was in 2nd but can't be sure). As far as the World Soccer readers and journalists go, my impression/instincts probably give an even split - Rivera favoured over Riva, but also Nezter (but tentatively Walter too) over Overath maybe to slightly less of an extent and just about Boniek over Blokhin too. Interesting that there were those splits between readers and writers anyway I suppose.
Another WM team that caught my eye (from Giancaro Felitziani as far as I can read it, of Italy): ------------------------Gilmar--------------------------- D Santos-------------Rosato-----------------N Santos -------------Neeskens------------Liedholm------------ ------------Meazza--------------------Pele-------------- Garrincha-----------Di Stefano----------------Riva (or as above, Di Stefano in the deep-lying centre-forward role with Pele and Meazza more up front). Seems to be in shirt number order, like Green's team also.

Copied the readers 100 from another site as I know the England online page copies badly - still, not sure why some names now are crossed through but we can read them anyway.
This list is no other than WOrld Soccer Magazines TOP100 by 2000- 2001 edition! You can go directly there ... (no crossing out in names) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Soccer_(magazine)#Greatest_XI_of_all_time
True, yeah. This one does have also the players which didn't make the top 100 but received the points shown from readers' votes: http://www.englandfootballonline.com/teamhons/honswldsocplyrscent.html Actually, though Puck didn't ask for more than the top 100 I might as well copy and paste those extra players here too: Ardiles (Arg) 14, Ademir (Bra) 13, S Al-Owairan (Sau) 10, Albert (Hun) 10, Amoros (Fra) 10, Archibald (Sco) 10, Albert (Blg) 9, Atmatsidis (Gre) 8, Adams (Eng) 6, Alemao (Bra) 6, Anelka (Fra) 6, Abedi Pele (Gha) 5, Aldridge (Ire) 5, I Allchurch (Wal) 5, Asparoukhov (Bul) 5, J L Andrade (Uru) 3, Antognoni (Ita) 3, Awukoso 3, Ayala (Chl) 2, Almeyda (Arg) 1. I looked up the World Sports poll results again now btw, as per Puck's post on comme's thread about the 1986 World Cup (also Puck posted about 1986 ideal XI's of journalists but found the World Sports poll at the same time he found those). One interesting thing I notice now is that voters couldn't choose players from their own countries. I see that Bobby Charlton was actually given the left wingers spot in the consensus first team (I assume not all votes had him in that position and he gets the place for overall number of votes compared to other cadidates though there are no details about that - he was in nearly half the teams). And Best was listed as number 10 in the consensus second XI, with Gento as left winger in that team.
Likewise for the overall team as per this thread on page 1: Cruyff seems probably to be given the left winger slot though he was not put there by everyone who voted for him (also Di Stefano in midfield is similar I think). Arguably Cruyff didn't benefit from the rule about nobody from the voters own nation in 1970 as he'd be more established in the Netherlands than elsewhere at that stage (though had made people take notice in other countries of course); not that I know how many Dutch people voted out of the 80 overall who did.
To an extent they did know him abroad. Like I said before, at early 1968 Wolstenholme included Cruijff in his book containing 38 retired and playing footballers. In the same year (and 1969 too) Brian Glanville compared Cruijff with George Best and, maybe jinxing Best his fate ( ? ), noted that Cruijff looked the more stable figure (something like that). Glanville was also the journalist who had Cruijff at #1 for the 1969 Ballon d'Or vote (in the three years he actually won, the British representative didn't rate him and even leaving him out in two years IIRC; in the landslide 1971 year England left him out I remember - anyway I searched for that in the past and posted it). There's also a 1969 article of Mundo Deportivo in the archive where they likened him with the Beatles and George Best.
Yeah, understood. His fame was more established during the 70's I suppose - and he was seen to prove himself fully and also become fully complete as a player I suppose. Actually, if I was Dutch (ofc I'm not though) and constricted by the choice of 'foreign' players only I guess Best might be the one who'd come into my choice of all-time XI, being unable to select Cruyff. I don't expect you'd necessarily make the same choice of replacement though (I don't know what role Johan would be given in your XI - I guess he woud be in it though!). As I'm English, I guess Bobby Moore's ineligibility might convince me to move Beckenbauer back alongside Baresi and be able to choose both Van Basten, and Di Stefano who could be put in as a box to box midfielder rather than up front. Although, another Dutchman, Ruud Krol could be considered to just slot in alongside Baresi in defence.
Would be interesting to know the effect for Moore of not having English votes count for him in 1970 too. Although, could be German or Italian voters might end up including him when unable to select Baresi (or others) and Beckenbauer themselves. Also would be interesting to know if his votes would increase after the 1970 WC and his tackle on Jairzinho etc (also for Banks and his wonder save from Pele). Billy Wright got enough votes for a place in the first XI - as centre-back though wheras Moore seems to be picked as left-half with Ocwirk as old-fashioned centre-half in team 2. Im not sure whether voters had to or chose to mainly pick a WM formation or not (by 1970 WM variants resembling 4-2-4 or 4-3-3's would be the norm I suppose). I'd better link that post now since I mentioned it a lot: All star teams of 1986 World Cup?
