Probably team orders, you win it, you don't take it. Don't know if Ba won the two he took. Loven took 2 in the LC as well.

We've given away 4 in the last two games. Despite the comeback, I'm convinced the squad has taken it's foot of the accelerator.

Maybe, maybe not. The Arsenal game is the one that will tell, I think. Based on the second half, if Ben Arfa plays from the onset we can get something out of it. If Pardew goes back to the same old starting XI (which he should realize by now doesn't work...) then we're dicked.

Pardew's tactics for the past 2 months almost have been horrible. He is too stubborn to adjust to his players and forces them to continue to play a system that does not fit their abilities. I hope that he has finally gotten it through his head that the offense is much better with Ben Arfa on the pitch. You don't play him for his defense. If there are concerns about Simpson than switch the right footed Jonas over in front of him and let HBA play in front of Santon who doesn't need the help. This team is so pedestrian without HBA in the game though. And Pardew's whole fist/arm pump with a Ric Flair "WOOOOO" as he walked towards O'Neil after the penalty was caused and the goal were juvenile and I'd expect a little better from the manager. Doing that towards the pitch or your own bench, fine. Walking over to rub it in the opposition's face is beneath a professional manager.

If we're going to insist on playing 4-4-2, we need Ben Arfa on the left and Jonas on the right. I still think 4-3-3 is our best formation because then one of Guthrie/Cabaye can get forward. Cabaye stays way too deep when there's just him and Tiote so there's very little threat coming from the center of the park.

In Pardew's defense, he held his hand up in the postgame interview and admitted he "didn't exactly cover himself in glory" there. Of course, it's not the first time he's done something dumb either.

I'm still operating with the conspiracy theory that despite the number of jerseys a stint in Eurpoa league might garner, Ashley doesn't want to pay for the quality and depth it'd take to be part of that club. So, 'below Europe but above relegation' is what Pardew has been asked to create.

    I love Shola Ameobi.

First off I agree with TD and others about the tactics, I was disappointed to see us line up in the exact same way we did against Wolves because we saw in that game (and others prior) that its not just "on the day" they didn't play, that formation doesn't work. Cisse gets too far forward, to effectively take us down to ten men, and that "playing on the shoulder of the last man" style only works if there is space in behind and someone capable of playing in a killer pass. That person could be Cabaye, but as TD mentioned above he and Tiote don't venture far north of the center circle these days. Raylor on the wing does pretty much nothing (other than set pieces), and having Simpson and Raylor on the same flank doesn't give us any real attacking thrust down that side. And its not that solid defensively by the fact that it invites pressure due to the lack of said attacking. As I said after the Wolves game, what is supposed to be the plan to create chances?

I was delighted to see HBA brought on at half time, and I would have started him. I could see why he sacrificed Santon, Raylor at LB was part of our great start when we were so solid defensively. Santon does bomb on a bit too much which leaves us vulnerable to counter-attacks.

HBA seems to create chances or score every time he gets on the pitch, which must be frustrating for him as I'm sure he tries too hard sometimes. He's that bit of class that you need to unlock defences though. Start him Pardew, give him a run of games. Get his confidence up and we could have some player on our hands. Sometimes I feel like HBA is being judged by different standards to other players... I don't know if that's because of the way he trains or just because of the amount of talent he has. Obertan got a lot of patience from Pardew... Raylor gets picked despite being ineffective. I'm sure HBA's stats must be far superior to his competitors is all I'm saying.

I'm pleased we didn't lose in the circumstances but the fact is we took two points from a possible six in the last two games, four would have been a decent return, but if Pardew had shown more ambition I think we would have had six.

Regarding the celebrating winning a penalty, it seemed to stem from some people (Frazier Campbell) on the Mackem bench celebrating in front of our fans when they scored. Not to excuse Pardew, he should be bigger than that, don't go down to their level.

And a final point, f*ck me how ugly is the mackem team? I'm amazed their calendar wasn't banned under the obscene publications act.

I think the acquisition of Cisse says otherwise. This "below europe and above relegation" could have been achieved quite easily without spending pretty big money on Cisse. Points to a little more ambition than we thought Ashley had in my opinion.

I've been waiting for Wasp's recap of the game and today I finally got it. Passing it along as always:

Love it, mostly. Still think Dean, for all he did right, got a couple of decisions horribly wrong. Other than that and the Simpson/Santon debate, your pal nailed it.

So wait... the cats are dogs now? That was kind of pathetically confusing to read.

The fact that blowing two points against us ostensibly is viewed as a positive turning point in their recent history says it all, really.

If I was a mackem, dropping a game at the death surely would make me forget the 5-1 debacle from last season.

    Thx,

    Jay!
