watching the portland philly game on espn. noticed a guy waving a black flag with what looked like a skull and crossbones or a jolly roger behind the goal defended by philly.

    is there any portland significance?

A lot of the flags are for the different countries that our players are from. I've heard the pirate flag is for Captain Jack (Jewsbury). But it might just be that pirate flags are frikin' awesome and nobody would want to screw with someone who is waving one.

    Plus Portland likes pirates: http://portlandpiratefestival.com/

The flag pole runs up several flags, I've seen Scotland's saltire, City of Portland, TA flag.

Kejsare is right, and pirate flag represents love & peace to the opposing team
