Presumably, the Philadelphia Inquirer will have a three- page spread on the MLS Cup tomorrow, since there wasn't ONE line in this morning's paper about the match.
If Union can't get past page 15 after beating Pink Cows, then there's no way in hell this was getting a mention. That being said, it's par for the course in a town where the local media only gives cursory attention to championship rounds not involving the locals. You probably would have seen something about Bobby Convey if SJ had made it, but on a day where the Eagles are playing the Giants, that would have either been buried, or given minimal space.
There's a World Cup bid article in this morning's Philadelphia Metro that mentions the popularity of the Union and includes a "thank you Sons of Ben" for increasing soccer awareness in the area.
How do we petition the Always Sunny cast to do an episode involving the Union, like they did the (defunct) Soul and the Phillies?
Wanted to let you know, the SOUL is no longer defunct! They will be playing at the Wachovia Center in 2011.
They did. However, they were purchased out of bankruptcy and returned last year for the 2010 season. In fact, games are on the NFL network weekly. The Soul will resume play in March of 2011. They are playing an 18 game season, with their home games mostly on Friday nights.
6abc news had a story on the coat donations tonight, mentioned they came from gamedays and SoBs. 700 collected, I think it said.
Has Jon Tannenwald become preoccupied with other pursuits? Since the WC announcements, he's been virtually invisible. He ignored the 1st stage of the Re-entry draft and the headline "No deal for Colombian goalkeeper" is a rather glaring reminder that he hasn't been around at all the last several days. I would have thought the symmetry between Cliff Lee wanting to come to Philly and the apparent shared sentiment with Mondragon would have been a good angle for a column/post, but nobody's picked up on it, at least not yet. I realize that it's not his full-time job, but it seems like the guy who had become the most consistent source of news/info in the area is now content to let Gabriel or Narducci do the heavy lifting. Is he being shifted into other areas?
Gotcha...I completely forgot he wrote their main college sports blog, and upon further review, it appears that he has been giving it his full-time attention, at least over the course of the last week. Well, here's hoping to a nice write-up about the claiming of Angel!
Not really... because as yet there has been no deal for Mondragon. With the whole 'passing in the reentry draft when Angel was available' move today, I'm starting to think that Mondragon isn't happening either.
No formalized deal, no, but the conflicting headlines were a strange sight to see. I'm hoping the arrangement wasn't conditional on JPA coming aboard, too, and that this events of the past month don't represent an unraveling of the progress the team made in the second half. The idea of Union getting positive offseason attention was intriguing. It's hard to generate excitement when all you have to talk about is players leaving. Obviously, JT covered the events of this afternoon, and I'll be hitting the site not long after 3 to see what he can report from Nowak's presser.
