Random thought- I wonder if PHL17 would be interested in the games that are getting dumped to TCN, since they lost all those Phillies games.
Wrote up a guest article for PSP about my experience with the "E" level coaching course: http://www.phillysoccerpage.net/201...d-my-national-e-level-coaching-certification/
Cool read Kevin, I've thought about doing the whole coaching license thing sometime in the future so it was interesting to hear about your experience. Getting your resume ready for a Union coaching gig?
hah yea, maybe the dorky video tape/opponent analyst In all seriousness, though, it's a very good networking opp.
There are a couple of anecdotes from Tom Veit when he used to run the Orlando Rage of the XFL in this article: http://www.sbnation.com/longform/2014/5/7/5683742/xfl-oral-history?curator=MediaREDEF Obviously him setting the beer record at the Citrus Bowl may have something to do with our original great selection of beer at PPL, but that's a stretch.
So Le Toux is back in town for a radio appearance at Chickie & Pete's today. I thought they were all staying in LA, bonding, putting their feet up etc?
From what I could tell, Le Toux was not in LA on Sunday. It appeared to me that only Berry and Bone were there in addition to the 18. Berry and Bone were working out with Kevin Miller before the game. I did not see Blake or any other player there. From Twitter, it looked like Maidana also stayed in Philly.
Blake was with Jamaica, I think. I guess the broadcast was yesterday, short week getting me mixed up.
Yeah, I was surprised when they said this, but they said he picked up an injury during training. Of course this was on the LA feed through MLS Live. I'm not sure if it was mentioned on the Union broadcast.
Berry looked fully fit during his pregame workout. To avoid any conspiracy theories though, it is possible that he had an injury and was working his way to full fitness and was, therefore, unavailable. Bone's pregame workout was a bit unorthodox. It involved karate chops, studs-up kicks at thigh level, running alternately with both arms out and then with both elbows out and sliding into Kevin Miller's shins.
Jonathan Tannenwald and myself did a Philadelphia Union and World Cup segment on CBS 3 last night. You can watch the clip here: I'm pretty sure this is the first time there's been a segment involving soccer reporters on a local TV station. We've had Union players on before, but not journalists. Comcast Sportsnet does the rare segment every so often, but that usually involves someone from the Union as well. So, it's a big step forward and hopefully we can build off of this.
Thoughts on Smallwood's analysis? http://www.philly.com/philly/column..._teams_have_deep_pockets__why_not_Union_.html Seems a bit simplistic to me. I have always been of the opinion that MLS Cups are won more with the 27 non-DP supporting players that teams get good value from rather than from the 3 DPs. Lloyd Sam at $136k and Lamar Neagle at $110k are far better values than Le Toux at $262k. And, with all the sucking up to NYRB that Smallwood does and how great they seemingly have been with Henry and BWP, the Union and RB have virtually identical records this season. Smallwood conveniently omits the fact that the Union bid $5M for Bradley. While not nearly enough, it does indicate that the Union will spend money under the right circumstances. That said, I have regularly stated that the Union would be vastly improved with an established striker like Henry, Di Vaio, Dempsey, Wondo, etc. on this team. That seems pretty obvious.
This 5M figured gets thrown around but I don't buy it. It is as if I went to a car auction and bid $15k for a bentley. I knew I wasn't going to get it for that but I could say I was there I tried. What I see the Union willing to spend is less than 1M total. ie. 500k for Maidana, maybe Edu depending how the loan works. And even that Edu situation seems questionable to me whith the league stepping in. yeah right.
I think the important thing to consider, the Union have now reached a point where they can be ripped in MSM. Not just the online blog version.
