Dallas NSR Non-Soccer Related, right? here's the thread for talkin' bout 60's pop music -

ok ok ok the horns in "I'm Your Puppet" by James and Bobby Purify is like high art for me - they're loud and quiet at the same time and breathing-like, aware of the human situation in the lyrics, resigned, content with the situation.

a marching band given to big production numbers could do that song with the marionette strings and all?

Your turn now, dear reader- got a fave-ritt moment? bet ya do :)

probly my next heart song will be by Dusty Springfield - or either Aaron Neville - mebbe Joe + Ann singing "Gee Baby" tho' that one's a bit obscure

I gotta say that the Monkees' oeuvre is probably the most underrated of the well-know 60s acts. Last Train to Clarksville is a touching little song with anti-war undertones. Pleasant Valley Sunday could easily have been done by the Stones, and some of the stuff from Head showed genuine growth that just wasn't ever going to be appreciated.

To be fair, I'm no musician, but I like to think I've got a good ear for lyrics, and I don't think the Pre-Fab 4 (or their songwriters, anyway) get their due.

That particular song was written by Carole King, who also doesn't get quite as many accolades as she deserves IMO. A lot of her hits sound old-fashioned and cloying because they're overproduced in a way that doesn't fit her raw, bare-bones style, and if not for that I think they would still sound quite contemporary. Her recording of Pleasant Valley Sunday is on a new release of her demo tapes:

hey you guys Monkees gonna tour! I think it's gonna be this autumn 2012! heard it on the radio; 1st tour since Davy Jones passed away - if I remember correctly -

Lots of good talent brought to bear for the Monkees - yes - but imo you can't beat the "real-thang out of the neighborhood" stuff you hear for instance like in "Mother -in - Law" Ernie K-Doe or even "All My Lovin' " Beatles or any thing by Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions - I probably would have liked the Monkees stuff on the radio MORE if i hadn't had a little resistance to the TV show and the star-maker machinery as, cowtown you are aware when you write "Pre-Fab 4".

now carol king is the real thing - writing and selling songs pre-beatles era. i will still love her tomorrow - knock on wood I don't choke to death on a chopstick in the interim

My fave old-school artist to mention today is Dusty Springfield - she sounds so brave and sincere! you want her for your sweetheart! (if you're me) (+ don't go be bringing up any flimsy obstacles like orientation or isn't alive - love conquers all!)

in a radio interview she mentioned that SHE, Dusty, sang "the only boy who could EVer move me, was the son of a preacher man" + she admiringly pointed out that ARETHA emphasized the lyric there: "the only boy WHO! could ever move me ... "

now I'll have you singing it both ways all day!!!!! ha ha ha ha ha ha ha valuble lesson in funk right there people - no charge!

ok mentioning ernie k-doe gave a fierce jones 4 N'Awlinz so I went over to youtube + listened to the topmost Mother-In-Law listed there [the one w/ black n white news photos from 1961] + I just had to come back and say the reedy-voice tenor guy in the back-up vocals is SO [your intensifying expletive in this space] [not that one, this is a family thread here, people] COOL!

the drums, characteristically of New Orleans, drag so cool... ... ... i wish my alley was sea shells

Hey cowtown, the nbc.com link won't play for me - dasss all right ---

I just wanna alert stripy-hoopy music fans: Aaron Neville is the guest on a good radio interview this Sunday evening 2/17/2013 at 9:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. on KERA 90.1 FM. he'll mos' likely be both singin' and tellin' it like it is - and was.
Also! And furthermore! that 9 to 10 p.m. hour overlaps with Sunday Night Second Line's 1st hour.

so if you're the Man Who Fell to Earth you can listen to both at once

What is Sunday Night Second Line? New Orleans music! broadcast from TCU's 88.7 FM station, 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. every Sunday night, dontcha know.
btw, did u have purple gold and green in your hair Tuesday? i did woohooooo
