With three Spanish La Liga sides (Sevilla FC, Real Madrid, and Malaga CF) participating in the 2009 edition of pre-season competition the Peace Cup, and now that all of the other competitors and the groups have been announced, I thought that I would go ahead and create this thread, this so that fans of the relevant clubs, as well as others, can discuss their teams involvement in the competition (pre, during, and post) and any other issues and events related to the Peace Cup.

The Peace Cup, which first went ahead in 2003, is an International Club Competition in place to promote World Peace. It is the biggest pre-season club competition in existence and tends to be taking quite seriously by the teams involved. The competition is held once every two years, and since it's first edition has crowned PSV Eindhoven (2003), Tottenham Hotspur (2005), and Olympique Lyonnais (2007), as Peace Cup Champions.

For this year's edition the amount of teams participating has increased to 12, this as opposed to 8 which was the figure seen in previous editions. The competition will be based in the Andalusia region of Spain, will take place between the dates of July 24th - August 2nd, 2009, and will hand out prize money of 2 million Euros to the winner, 1 million Euros to the runner up, and 500,000 Euros to the third and fourth place teams.

Below are the groups and teams involved in this year's competition:

    Group A

    Sevilla FC (Spain)

    Juventus FC (Italy)

    Seongnam Ilhwa (Korea, Respublic)

    Group B

    Real Madrid (Spain)

    Liga de Quito (Ecuador)

    Al-Ittihad (Saudi Arabia)

    Group C

    Malaga CF (Spain)

    Aston Villa FC (England)

    Celtic FC (Scotland)

    Group D

    Olympique Lyonnais (France)

    Fenerbahce S.K. (Turkey)

    FC Porto (Portugal)

Turkish outfit Fenerbache have wihdrew from the 2009 Peace Cup due to the competition clashing with the UEFA Europa League qualifiers, which Fenerbache find themselves in. Fellow Turkish outfit (and 2008/2009 Turkcell Süper Lig champions) Besiktas will take Fenerbache's place in the competition, therefore meaning that Group D will now look as follows:

    Group D

    Olympique Lyonnais (France)

    Beşiktaş J.K. (Turkey)

    FC Porto (Portugal)

SPL outfit Glasgow Celtic are the latest team to withdraw from the 2009 edition of the Peace Cup. The Scottish Giants have withdrew due to the competition clashing with the UEFA Champions League qualifiers, which Celtic will need to participate in. To replace Celtic will be Mexican outfit and 2008/2009 CONCACAF Champions League winners, Atlante CF, this therefore meaning that Group C will now look as follows:

    Group C

    Malaga CF (Spain)

    Aston Villa FC (England)

    Atlante CF (Mexico)

It will be difficult for Malaga to enter in semifinals, we have Aston Villa, and Atlante, the current CONCACAF Champions. But we can! :D
