Maryland midfielder Paul Torres is set to leave the Terrapins in order to explore professional opportunities, according to multiple sources.

    ...

Born in Venezuela, Torres’ best options abroad could be in Central or South America, but he could also pursue the lower professional tiers in the U.S. Neither avenue would affect his MLS rights, which remain with D.C. should Torres join the league in the future.

Given his birthplace, no idea if he is a Yank but he did go to high school here. Anyone know?

I have good memories of the DCU U16 team that went to the finals. Torres, Funes; Najar, Phillips; Hengi

    Ask england66 :p

He was in the U18 NT camp in Jan 08, while the post is from Dec 09. Of course, there's no guarantee that the poster is actually him.

It's also known that the USSF occasionally calls in players without US citizenship, although there are few examples at the U18 and U20 level that I know of. However, Diego Fagundez has spent time with at U14 and U15 camps and was invited to play with the most recent U17 team for a small tournament. Fagundez holds only a Uruguayan passport.

You don't have to be a citizen to be in camp.

Not sure if the final consensus was that this guy is american or not, but I can at least report that he is now trialing with GUSK in the fourth tier of swedish football (where american defender Greg Rosenthal also play).

    The GUSK manager commented:
"An exciting player. He couldn't make the team with DC United but he wants to try his wings and it was a good fit for us to bring him here as he's been highly recommended. He landed on wednesday and trained with us outdoors even though he was jetlagged. I liked what I had the chance to see from him. But we want to observe him over a longer period, to see if he fits in."

Torres is now trialing with Nyköpings BIS, the club who recently signed fellow american Shaquille Phillips. There's a video interview with him here, in the video he says that he's venezuelan but the paper write in text several times that he's american.

Two wins and two losses so far this season for Nyköpings BIS and the americans have had various degrees of success.

Shaquille Phillips seems to be the one that's doing the best. He has started all games and played the full 90 minutes three times and 56 minutes once. He seems to mostly have been playing rightback instead of central defender and has received praise in several match reports.

Stefan Jerome started the first three games, was subbed out early second half in the first two and then played the full 90 minutes of the third game where he also scored his only goal so far. In the latest game he only came on to play the last seven minutes. I might be jumping to conclusions here but I get the vibe that the club might have had higher expectations on him then what he has performed so far.

Paul Torres has had the least playing time in the league out of the three. He came on as a second half sub in two games and made a positive impact so he got to start in the latest game where he unfortunaly was sent off with a red card in the second half. He also scored one goal in a local cup.

Torres was maybe the least successful of the three americans in Nyköping at the time of the last update, however things have quickly turned around and he has now become one of the best players on the team over the last month. The local newspaper report that the club wants to extend his short three month deal to the rest of the season. It doesn't say if Torres has agreed to this yet though. The local paper refers to him as "the jovial american" and write that his form has been very good in his central midfield position.

According to the offical Nyköping website he has scored two goals, made one assist and has been named man of the match in one game. And quickly looking through the match reports he's been singled out as one of the best players on the team in all of the five latest games. They write that his strengths are his good passing, technique and the amount of running he does.

With all the Allsvenskan teams winning their Swedish Cup games this past weekend the highest ranking team who got eliminated was instead Brommapojkarna (second place in Superettan, the second tier). And since this is a thread about a guy in Nyköpings BIS you can probably figure out that it was indeed Nyköping who eliminated them! They are now also the only fourth tier or lower team that remains in the tournament after this round.

The game started off as you might expect with Brommapojkarna going 2-0 up after 20 minutes and with 60 minutes played the score was 3-1 and things looked comfortable for the Superettan team. However Nyköping then scored and in the 90th minute they also equalized. The game of course went to extra time where things looked to be heading for penalties when Paul Torres scored the 4-3 goal with only four minutes remaining. Nyköping then scored another goal shortly after and won the game 5-3.

Torres had just came back from a short term injury but besides that it sounds like he has continued to play well and seems to be highly regarded on the team who are currently in second place in the league with a good chance for promotion.

Congratulations to Paul Torres, Shaquille Phillips and their Nyköpings BIS who secured promotion already yesterday with two games remaining of the season!

Torres has remained a starter for the team during this last stretch of the season and according to reports he has been one of the key figures in securing the promotion. In an interview yesterday the Nyköping manager revealed that Torres has received interest from first tier Allsvenskan club Gefle IF and that he will train with them starting tuesday.

Torres has extended his contract for another year and will be with Nyköpings BIS again next season as the club plays in the third tier for the first time since 2005.

The season will also start off in a very interesting way since the club progressed to the group stage of the swedish cup. In the new cup format introduced this year there will be a group stage played just before the regular league season starts and there they will face two Allsvenskan teams (IFK Göteborg and Kalmar FF) and one Superettan team (IK Brage).
