Link Chivas USA striker Francisco 'Paco' Palencia joined us on Friday, October 14, to chat live about Chivas USA's upcoming home game against the MetroStars on Sunday on ESPN2 and the future of the Los Angeles-based club. Read the transcript below.MLSnet.com Thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. Paco Palencia I'm glad to be here. Thank you for having me. Kristian from New Jersey A lot was made of your original signing with Chivas USA, then you went back to Mexico to be with the Guadalajara club for their impressive Libertadores run, and then finally, you're mid-August signing. Since you arrival here, what has been your impression of the overall level of play in Major League Soccer, and more specifically, in comparison to the Mexican league? Paco Palencia They're very different leagues. One of them is more based on strength and velocity and speed and Mexican is more touching the ball, preparing the play and more touches of the ball. But I think I adapted really fast to this league and my performance in the Libertadores Cup, I spoke to Cuée and Vergara and they said it was ok to stay for Libertadores. Francisco from Mexico Do you think it was a good decision to go to Chivas USA? Paco Palencia I spoke to the president and I thought of this as a challenge. I think, overall, in the first few and last few games I think we had a good performance. Jason from Jersey City, N.J. The last time against the MetroStars you were able to score but couldn't get the win. What will you do differently this time? Paco Palencia To assure the victory, there is nothing mathematical we can do. We will pay a lot of attention to the offense and defense and finish the season with a great game. We will try and be balanced and hopefully that will be good enough to finish of the season with a good win. Matt C. from Los Angeles Are you concerned that the MetroStars might need to score 8 goals on you to make the playoffs? Are you guys ready for the potential onslaught? Paco Palencia No, we still have to do our game. We have to improve our defensive play and that's just what we are going to do. They're going to try score lots of goals, but we'll play well and are interested in the victory also. Jon from Los Angeles Hello Paco, I was wondering what your thoughts are on D.C. United's performance in the Copa Sudamericana, do you think it helped/harmed/or did nothing for MLS' overall image? Can we expect you to finish your career with Chivas USA? Paco Palencia I watched a couple of the games but after all it was the Chilean team that took the game. The Chilean team had more international experience but I think the image of MLS gets better with D.C. United's performance and performances like that. I don't know where I'm going to finish my career and what the future brings. Alex from Los Angeles What certain players would you like to bring to Chivas USA this offseason? And what are your thoughts about the "rivalry" between Galaxy and Chivas? Paco Palencia It's really hard to just say one player, it's the player job to go play, not to make those decisions. I can't say who plays good or bad, only the coach decides who comes over here. About the rivalry with the Galaxy, I think it's great. None of the two teams want to lose, of course. There's a rivalry and that's good. That's one of the reasons that the passion for soccer will increase in this country. Christine from New Jersey What did you think of the performance of the U-17's in the Youth World Cup? Paco Palencia Finally, it's not just the South American players that win this, it's the CONCACAF players who win this and are strong in the youth categories. It has a lot of value. We have never won a World Cup in any category and I think it's important for us to be world champions even if it is only in the youth categories. Justin from New York What will Chivas USA do differently next year to avoid a repeat of this year's performance? Paco Palencia As a player, it's hard to answer. We had some mental lapses and we just have to keep working hard in the mental state and tactical order to avoid the same problems we have had this year. Brandon from Phoenix, Az. From what you've seen so far, what are your thoughts on some of the promising young players such as Esteban Arias, Brad Guzan, Arturo Torres, Matt Taylor, and Armando Begines? Thank you and good luck on Sunday! Paco Palencia Well, for now they are evolving and developing very well. The problem is this year we had many young players who had not played in MLS or first division football and many teams had the advantage over us. As we progress and get experience, some of them will become stars in Major League Soccer. Lourdes de Nuevo Laredo Will you go to the WC if you get called up? Paco Palencia Yeah, of course all the active players want to play in the World Cup, that's obvious. Of course if I get called up I want to go. Juan from Carson, Calif. Are you going to be here next year or are you goin back to Mexico? Paco Palencia My contract is over in December and I have a clause to extend my contract then so in December I will have to see what the managers here think and what the coach has to say, if he wants me here or if not. We have to play this Sunday and win and we will decide next season deals when next season comes. Alex from Brooklyn What do you think about the comments made by the President of América about Chivas USA being in over its head and that América USA could beat them. Paco Palencia Well, I haven't said that I'm leaving so the rivalry of América USA will be good for the league and fun for me. I don't want to talk too much about it until it is a reality. Things are either true or not. People thought América would be here this year and it didn't happen so I can't comment on things until I know they are true. MLSnet.com Thank you, Paco, for taking the time to speak with the fans on this chat. Paco Palencia Thanks for support us during this season. It was a hard season for everyone, for the Chivas fans and the players. It's been hard to lose all these games but we want to say goodbye with a win this Sunday and we want to thank, with a win, all the support the fans have given us this season.
Paco Palencia is and will always be a legend of both mexican and world soccer. IMO, he has always presented himself as a well spoken and mature individual. He's also always been one of my dream team players and this coming from an Argentine. I for one, really hope that his MLS career last more than just as a novelty in 2005. He is Chivas USA's best player and it would be a huge loss for the team if he left in December.
I agree. I like his outlook on the Mexican U17s victory being a victory for all of CONCACAF because I kind of viewed it like that too although I REALLY would have rather had our boys in red/white/blue to win it but hey whatcha gonna do right?? Just an overall good attitude in his approach to the game...
I hope Palencia stays. MLS needs more players like him if we want to transition into a more skillfull league. He has had success in both the club game and the international game. He would be great for helping young players.
