I have no problem with Spirit in a women's league. Obviously, I blame the Abe Pollin and the Bullets for the Mystics name. The NBA wanted to connect the men's teams to their women's teams. Fail would be the identity crisis that is the Spirit logo.
They disagree (I have no idea from who's ass they pulled this tweet): D.C. United Women @DCUWomen RT @washspirit: Why @WashSpirit? Name supports core mission of club to empower women thru sport
It's not meant as a slam on the sport at all -- I don't dislike women's soccer, and if it does well that's great. But if it's "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me," well, what's "fool me three times"? What's changed in the last seven months that makes this league likely to succeed? (and the answer can't be "Dan Borislow isn't involved in it")
Get ready for the high pitched sound of "we've got spirit yes we do"... Not saying it's a guarantee, but, well, it is.
Also, at some point, and that point may have been 8 or so years ago, the continual failings of their leagues do have a negative impact on MLS too.
"Washington Freedom" always sounded to me like they were sponsored by a feminie hygine product. Thx, Jay!
Don't worry--that's exactly how I took your post. I cut WPS a lot of slack, because it was clearly very different from WUSA. It seemed like they learned from previous mistakes. This time? It just feels like they found a few more people with money.
And then they doubled down on mistakes by bringing in Borislow. Also, Marta was the Typhoid Mary of women's professional soccer.

Sorry for the double post -- first message said "server error -- try again." Might be the motto for women's professional soccer as well.
I've never watched a minute of women's soccer in my life so please excuse my ignorance, but wasn't she also by far the most expensive player? Maybe correlation is causation in this case.
More importantly, federations are invested in this still unnamed league (Women's PSA?). USSF, FMF, and CSA will somehow be paying for some of the players. I'm imagining this is somewhere between W-League and WPS as far as expectations. I can imagine this lasting longer if they actually iron out some details* they continue to say are coming soon... *tiny details like sponsorships, tv deals, teams...
This is the key point. The federations are much more vested in the league than they have been in the past and these players will account for a significant portion of the player pool. Coupled with learning from the numerous mistakes of the previous two attempts, I'm trying to be optimistic.
To follow up, the sad thing is that if there is more of that in summer 2014, I'm not entirely sure FIFA will care. Of all the greedy corrupt organizations in the world, there can't be one more greedy or more corrupt.
As I understand it, Tigre got the usual "long way to the stadium for security reasons" for the Copa Sudamericana final leg at Sao Paulo . Then it was a massive card fest for the first half. Then the security force there paid a visit to Tigre's locker room during the half and left with blood on the walls. Tigre's players refused to come out for the second half so Sao Paulo is the champion and the second leg will not be played.
Thanks. I just found the AP story. Crazy town! That's like pre-TV, pre-world wide interwebs crazy. The AP gives FIFA too much credit, however: "The chaotic scenes in Sao Paulo, before a sellout crowd of 65,000 at Morumbi stadium, is sure to trouble FIFA -- the governing body of world soccer -- which already has been frustrated by slow preparations for the World Cup." Hah! When contacted about the incident, Sep Blatter rolled around on his bed full of money laughing maniacally.
