people like that woman just upset me ... it isn't her tax money that is being spent ... it is TOURIST tax dollars ... and yes, sure could they spend some of the money on community things like better schools and police and etc ... sure, but let's not mistake the fact that putting a stadium in that shitehole that is paramor might just help spur the place into being less of a shitehole ... which would be good for the community. not to mention $20M is a drop in the bucket .... in that very news segment they are spending $25M on some arts center (which is good by me) which won't have nearly the community impact of a soccer stadium and subsequent MLS team in Orlando. and i love how the news article doesn't mention word one about how much of the total cost to get MLS in Orlando (Stadium + Expansion) the team itself is willing to foot .... which is well over 50% of the estimated total cost ($150M-$170M).
doesn't look like this has been posted here: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/business/os-venues-tourist-tax-stadium-20130808,0,7623039.story this excites me! congrats, Orlando.
Honestly, with the stadium being a done deal . . . if Orlando isn't announced as the next MLS expansion side, then something shady is going on at MLS Headquarters.
Am I missing something or did I misread? I thought what I read earlier today stated that if Orlando is awarded the Franchise, that the stadium is a go . . . at least the 85 million dollar version, but I'm sure they'll be hitting the state up for more during the next session.
And survive this lawsuit. (I'm pretty confident that lawsuit will be dropped like a bad habit. But still)
The agreement announced today was an agreement between the mayors of Orange County and Orlando. While it's certainly good they are throwing their weight behind the project, it's not up to them. As soccermilitant pointed out, it's up to city and county commissioners, who are expected to vote on the proposal in the next few weeks.
Jeff Carlisle @JeffreyCarlisle14h Not to put a damper on #ocsc news, but stadium opp Mike Cantone tells me lawsuit vs. Orlando & Orange County is being planned...
Meh I'm not worried. I think talking about a lawsuit is actually a sign of how close this is to happening, since you wouldn't sue someone for making a proposal. I think the talk is just trying to intimidate the government from passing the funding.
Sun. 8/11/13: - beat Seattle Reserves 2-0 - set new regular season attendance record with 10,697 - beat previous regular season attendance record by more than 1,100 - pulled level with Richmond at top of USL table - will meet Richmond @ Richmond this Wed. 8/14
I read where the lawsuit will fail if it doesn't disappear first because: a) it's being brought by a community activist (a bit of a crank and scrubhat, apparently) who's run for and lost mayoral primaries at least a few times and this is his scheme-of-the-week to get his name known and b) the reg that the lawsuit claims has been violated in fact explicitly provides for using hotel taxes on stadia, convention centers, etc.
Funny, when I read that I immediately thought of this guy in Orlando whose radio show I used to produce when I lived there. His name is Doug Guetzloe. I googled him to see if this was who you wre talking about only to discover he's currently in the midst of a 15 month prison sentence for tax fraud.
yeah sorry, I was going to cut and paste it instead but then I knew that I'd very likely get slapped by the Mods...
Orlando is a done deal. Christ I noticed a couple weeks ago MLSsoccer.com was reporting on OCSC's crowd size....hell, there were a whole bunch of OCSC reports on MLSS.com It's as good as done.
Not until they finalize their stadium plans. I agree that it's exceedingly likely that Orlando City gets a team, but the stadium is the important last piece.
City board of commissionersapproved today . . . Now it's up to the County board, which was always expected to be the more difficult sale. http://orlandocitysoccer.com/news/?article_id=1613
