I don't think at the end of the day, there would be any love between the two sides after the Duke/UNC game. After the US lost to Mexico (in the only location they can beat us), Mexicans were climbing the fence between the two sets of fans. They were exchanging flags, jerseys, and other nationalistic symbols.

Mexico HATES the USA with a passion, but it is a jealous hate. Spitting on someone and using denegrating terms has crossed the line.

I too was born here, and I have a long history in the USA. Family history is Irish and English. So, as you can see I am not Mexican.

Watch what you say, and how you say it. You don't have to stoop to the level of others in this forum...go to rivalries.

If I find pics I will send them your way, but it DID happen.

I might add, the US fans were pretty balsy. They were outnumbered about 103,000 to 200 and still did this.

ok back to the topic, what major event that will change the popularity of soccer in the USA?

ummmm, Kobe will translate his basketball skillz to soccer by scoring 6 goals a game to match his 81. say like 1 goal counts as 13.5 points per game in BB. 81/6....13.5 points each...hahaha

Or maybe a bipartisan bill signed by George W. Bush making soccer America's official sport, and appointing a new "Soccer Czar".

...or a computer mogul will buy a franchise and turn it into a super flop (a la Allen and the Trailblazers).

Let's come up with something realistic. How about a soccer power putting a franchise in a major city, and supplying it with the youth squad...Madrid in Philadelphia? Barca in Pitt? Ajax in Baltimore?

Manchester United in Tampa Bay probably has a head start. Now, IMO that's a serious possibility.
As for changing the popularity of soccer in the U.S. which is what the thread is about, I don't think it'd have a great effect.

If you put the right team in the right location it would harvest the fan base that is already present. Chivas USA is a great example. The fan base in Los Angeles is ripe for the picking as far as Chivas is concerned...and they don't need to pick off Galaxy supporters. All you have to do is turn on the TV in LA or SD any Saturday or Sunday and flip through the Spanish channels to find a Mexican game on. Chivas is wildly popular throughout Mexico, and also throughout SoCal.

Yeah, we know about Chivas' popularity in Mexico. Means nothing here though. That's why their median attendance was about 12,000 last season. And that's with a new team playing in a new stadium. Wait 'til the novelty wears-off.

I still don't think that would change the popularity of soccer. Do you really think that average American sports fan in Pittsburgh or Baltimore is going to pay money to go see a "foreign" team play for a tie? The average American doesn't seem to care about soccer. Until the USA becomes very good and we can get these wishywashy trolls to jump on the bandwagon, I don't see anything else changing the popularity of the game.

Point taken on the 12,000 (I don't really care if it is 100% accurate). Give them time and the attendance will grow. You don't just set up shop and immediately start running 25,000 throught the gates.

No single event, short of a wc victory ;) , will draw the fans IMMEDIATELY.
