Unnecessary show off? You have to be delusional to think he did this for some obscure camera man 40 feet away from him.

When they are down 4-0 what the hell is the point for extending it? Has nothing to do with Spain continuing to play or Italy continuing to defend. Why have them continue to chase the ball or even jog around when they are soundly beaten?

Casillas did not do that to make himself look better. He did that to be a good sportsman to someone like Buffon and Pirlo. He told that goal line official because Casillas knew he can communicate with the head official through the headset. To think this is anything other than Casillas trying to do the right thing is far from reality.

I don't think it was necessarily an example of fairplay and I don't even think he thought anyone would do anything, he was just kinda thinking out loud especially after you see your CB in front of your opponent's goal trying to pull of a backheel well after the game was done  I think Iker, perhaps more than most players, understands that success comes in cycles and he knows the pain of being the "loser" all too well, esp. the past couple of years on the Club level. I don't think he was showing off as much as he was being a bit empathetic...good on him.

It may well have been a 'come on, it's over, let's just end it and get this celebration going, what's the point?', rather than a 'Good sir, I believe we should end this contest immediately. We have thoroughly outplayed Italy, and I feel it would be the respectful thing to end their misery early', type of comment.

I don't think it warrants any special kind of praise either, but

    a) Refs and linesman can communicate via headsets

    and

    b) You can't be serious with your middle paragraph? So he's suppose to tell Torres, "Hey Nino, be a nice guy and don't go for the golden boot. You might hurt the Italians' feelings." Taking out a player of their own is even more stupid. You think the Italians are going to think at the 54th minute or whenever Motta went off, "Thanks for respecting us so much and taking a player out for us. We'll stop trying for the next half an hour or so since you have obviously already won the match."

Casillas' friendship with Xavi landed him in trouble with Mourinho, claims midfielder's father

Apparently Pele thinks Casillas deserves the Balon d'Or this year.

Lots of talk all across the media asking for Casillas to get it. The voting doesn't take place until a couple of months otherwise i feel he would have definitely got into the top 3 based on sympathetic votes alone.

Meh, propaganda to get more votes away from the other Madrid player so Messi ends up the victor (his voters would never vote Casillas, Cristiano's would be split with Casillas).

End game is that Cristiano loses votes to Casillas who would have zero chance of winning because people don't give him enough do for what he has done on the pitch and Messi comes out without a scratch. Turn Madrid on Madrid.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I read it... People voting for Casillas and Ronaldo will be split and Messi will win again by default.

By the time they actually vote all this Casillas talk would have died out.

Arbeloa, Xabi and Sergio Ramos showed that they are real men. :D

Casillas is cool, but as a non Spaniard, you can't help but feel pleasure to know that these guys hurt Xavi's feelings so much he had to go cry to his father about it.

From experience I've found that you can generally ignore what comes after these three words. Whenever Pele opens his mouth, the bookies stop taking bets on the opposite thing happening.

Haha true, I was going to say something along those lines, but this time his opinion isn't all that farfetched I don't think. He still won't win it but the opinion that he deserves it or at least should be genuinely considered for the award makes sense.

You cannot statistically compare Messi/Cristiano with Iker Casillas, so basically you're whole 'take' on the matter is all about how Iker is, by far actually, the best goalkeeper on the planet, but not the best footballer. So get over it.

Also, a discussion usually consists of pros and cons. You talk about the negative aspects of Messi's and Cris' seasons, yet I don't see you mentioning the fact that Iker tends to be very inconsistent, especially in the League.

And please stop saying that he deserves it because of his season as a whole. Nobody was talking about this until after the Euros.

He always performs when it really matters, but he is not the best footballer in the world, so why the hell should he win it?

What do you expect, Iker to score 70 goals a season?

Iker actually performs on the international stage while also performing at club level, something that Messi has never done, and as for Ronaldo he comes close but falls short.

And as for Iker being "very inconsistent" lmfao get a grip

Xavi performs on the international stage as well. Give the Ballon D'or to him. Or what about Iniesta, who was the best player of the tournament?

Stop laughing your ass off, and start watching the games properly instead of writing down every single meaningless statistic. Maybe you'll learn something then.

    So?

People need to seriously understand the concept of the Ballon D'or. It's not the friggin Hall of Fame.

Xavi and Iniesta didn't win the league this season. But it's true Xavi should have gotten it a couple of seasons ago instead of Messi.
