Yeah, although I still find it hard to see the merits of MLS's general policy:
Sign a worse prospect over a better one because the worse guy counts as homegrown.

Via twitter, the WaPo's SoccerInsider says UNC junior Ben Speas has signed a homegrown contract with the Crew.

    Bisbee,

Whether live, video, or film, I have watched every match of Darren Mattocks' career @ Akron, both home and away. (You know I speak truth on that point;)). He is the most natural finisher I have ever witnessed at the collegiate level. That comparison includes many already playing MLS. Sure, he has other deficiencies. But during his Sophomore season, he demonstrated a willingness to work on his weaknesses. For instance, his passing has improved dramatically over one year. He was actually a rather poor passer upon arrival @ Akron.

Contributing to his inconsistency is his lack of brute strength. As he is still young, some strength will be gained without much effort. I would have loved for him to remain a Zip another year. But he should take the opportunity given. If I needed a Striker, as Montreal Impact apparently do, I would draft Darren Mattocks with the first pick tomorrow. No bout a doubt it!

FKN... I don't disagree with you about the talents of Mattocks but I don't think he's a great fit for the 1st overall pick. Montreal, as most expansion teams do, will have a lot of weaknesses on their team and will probably struggle this year... I am not sure he's mentally ready for that challenge, being on a team that doesn't compete most nights... being on a team that struggles to create scoring chances with frequency. He's not exactly the kid who's gonna strap a team on his back at this level (more the one who puts the cherry on top of a good build up). He's much more suited for a team that has 8 or 9 pieces to the puzzle but needs a pure finisher.

Anyone know anything about Boston College's Kyle Bekker? He's rarely talked about other than being Canadian. I kinda just want the general low down on the kid...

Thanks for the heads-up to GauchoYoungin and the UCSB thread, but two Gauchos with eligibility remaining have quietly signed in Europe.

Michael Nonni, who would have been a senior this fall, signed with SV Wilhelmshaven in Germany's Regionalliga Nord.

David Opoku, who would have been a junior this fall, signed with HJK Helsinki, which I'm assuming you can figure out is in Finland.

I can't find a link, but the folks on the UCSB board are very plugged in to the program so I'm gonna go ahead and defer to them on this one.

So I missed this when it happened but apparently VCU's Jose Carlos Castillo, who would have been a junior this fall, left school this winter and signed with a team in...... India.

Here's an article on it in Spanish.
    http://www.goal.com/es-la/news/686/mercado/2012/01/30/2876233/guatemala-josé-carlos-castillo-se-va-al-fútbol-de-india

This is the google translation of the first two graphs:

The midfielder Jose Carlos Castillo, 20 and U-20 World Cup with Guatemala in the World Cup in Colombia, was hired by the SuperLeague and will play Indiain Durgapur.

Guatemalan midfielder will leave Virginia Commonwealth University, which was for a couple of years but could return in the coming months after completing the first season in India.

    Here is his VCU bio.

Intriguing move. You can't help but wonder how on Gods green Earth a move from collegiate soccer to the Indian SuperLeague came about for the player but good luck to Jose in the Durgapur.

Looks to me like Schuler made a big mistake turning MLS down:
