Sydney FC Vice Chairman Scott Barlow today announced that Dirk Melton has been appointed as their new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Dirk joins Sydney FC from the position of Chief Operating Officer at National Rugby League (NRL) club the Canterbury – Bankstown Bulldogs.

Prior to working with the Bulldogs, Dirk held management positions with NRL club the St George Illawarra Dragons (Executive Manager, Consumer Products), Ticketek (Director, Marketing and Commercial), Goodman Fielder (Program Manager – Strategy) and spent considerable time within the Mars Corporation. He has an Engineering Degree (Chemical) and an MBA.

Melton will commence working with Sydney FC on Monday 20 June.

A signing!

Sydney FC have snapped up a key player to help bolster their troublesome backline with the imminent signing of Dutch defender Pascal Bosschaart.

The left-sided central defender/fullback/defensive midfielder is set to be confirmed by the club later this afternoon.

He has spent his entire career playing at the top level in Dutch football with roles at Eredivisie clubs Utrecht, Feyenoord and APO den Haag in more than 350 first team top flight games.

After a late finish to the 2010/11 season due to the AFC Champions League campaign, Sydney FC starts Pre Season training on Monday (18 July) with all 20 contracted players fit and ready for action. The only players missing from the first few weeks of Pre Season Training are Australian U20 World Cup trio Terry Antonis, Rhyan Grant and Dimi Petratos.

Over the last four seasons, Sydney FC has played 25 friendlies against State League clubs, all of which have been played in the catchment areas of those clubs, giving the people of Sydney the chance to watch Sydney FC play in their own backyards and injecting money into the game’s grassroots.

Along with the player visits to junior football clubs over the last month, it is an important part of Sydney FC’s on-going effort to engage with one of its most important stakeholder groups – the Sydney Football Community.

“We have always enjoyed playing the State League teams, it is important for the club and the Community, and we get some good matches,” Lavicka said. “We have some good memories of playing at State League grounds in front of the Sydney FC fans.”

New kits been confirmed too.

SYDNEY FC today confirmed adidas will be the club’s official kit supplier after signing a lucrative, four-year deal with the top football brand - and today unveiled their new adidas-designed training kit.

All three Sydney FC teams – Hyundai A-League, Westfield W-League and the National Youth League – sides will train and play in adidas. Sydney FC will unveil their highly anticipated new strip and launch 2011/12 membership packages on Monday August 8.

Sydney's new home playing strip is understood to keep the sky blue base colour but features a darker pinstripe on the front and a navy collar. The away strip sees the colours reversed, but without the collar.

The training kits - worn for the first time today - are a royal blue with black and white side panels and sleeves. Polo shirts will also be available in a similar design. The tracksuits are dark blue with adidas's white three stripes up the front.

LESS than a year ago, Michael Beauchamp was playing the match of his life for the Socceroos against Serbia as they desperately tried to keep their World Cup campaign alive.

Had Australia made it through to the knockout stages, Beauchamp would surely have been in the starting line-up of Pim Verbeek's side after a standout performance in Nelspruit.

But a year, as they say, is a long time in football.

In that time, Beauchamp has walked away from the lucrative sphere of European football, fallen out of favour with the Socceroos and, most despairingly, spent much of the past season on the bench.

His much-lauded move to Melbourne Heart went sour, with coach John van 't Schip never coming to grips with Beauchamp, resorting to bizarre alternatives such as using midfielder Matt Thompson as a centre-half. And if it didn't make much sense to the public, it made no sense at all to Beauchamp.

Beauchamp is one of four new faces in the Sky Blues' defence alongside Dutchman Pascal Bosschaart, Perth's Jamie Coyne and young Nathan Sherlock, creating much-needed competition for places.

Beauchamp, at 30, said he had ''at least five years left at the top'' and felt it was time to assume a bigger leadership role than he had elsewhere.

Cockers must be spewing we missed out on 'Arry!

New coaches, new players, new jerseys, new sponsors and a new front office. Sydney FC are promising a new beginning after the season from hell, but when the team kicked off pre-season training at Macquarie University this week, the media was conspicuous by its absence.

If there is a more polite and respectful coach in world football than the Czech mentor, I've yet to meet him. Being a nice guy and winning a championship in his first season earned Lavicka exalted status among the fans, and rightly so. But the happy veneer also disguised shortcomings that lurked beneath the surface. Sydney FC won the title two years ago through attrition, not artistry. So when the results evaporated last season, Lavicka's methods came into sharp focus. It is a well-worn cliche but it holds true: this is a city which demands entertainment above results from its sporting teams. Just ask the Waratahs.

Lavicka's methodical, often predictable, mantra was cast as European uber-professionalism in his first season, and you'd never question his dedication. But that inherent conservatism - evident during the title-winning season when the team won only once after going behind - came home to roost last season. Key injuries didn't help, but after a bad start the title defence was effectively over before it began as those teams prepared to take the game to the opposition set a pace, and a standard, that the Sky Blues - and Lavicka - simply couldn't match.

Sydney FC has appointed former Socceroo and AC Milan goalkeeper Zeljko Kalac as Hyundai A-League Goalkeeper Coach for the 2011/12 season.

“This is a great opportunity for me,” Kalac said. “It’s a pleasure to come in and work for my club because I’m Sydney born and bred and Sydney FC is my team. The facilities are great and I’m looking forward to working with the goalkeepers and the rest of the coaching staff.”

Kalac retired from football after a brief spell in Greece and despite doing some work as a football commentator and analyst signalled his intentions by completing his AFC C Licence Coaching qualification, as well as the first half of the B Licence.

Still no sponsor though

The only dampener on what amounted to a semi-official launch of the new season yesterday (the membership drive also kicked off) was the absence of a company logo on the front of the shirt. Melton admitted there was no guarantee there would be a sponsor to replace Bing Lee in time for the opening game of the season against Melbourne Victory on October 8.

''We're in discussions with some potential sponsors, but nothing's definite,'' he said. ''In my experience, these things can take 30 seconds or they can drag on, so I don't like to get too far ahead of myself.

''It's not ideal that we don't have a major sponsor but it's not critical. It's all part of the challenge of getting our house in order.''
