Lavicka said he was pleased to bring a top-shelf defender into his squad after losing Matt Jurman to Brisbane Roar. ''We all know he is a good player. He's been to two World Cups with the Socceroos and is a big, tall, strong defender. I am very happy about Michael joining us at Sydney FC,'' Lavicka said.

The signing is likely to spell the end of Stephan Keller's career at the club. The Swiss defender is out of contract at the end of the ACL campaign and the club is known to want to free up another visa position after signing Karol Kisel and Juho Makela in recent months. It also makes it extremely unlikely that Andrew Durante's short-term stint at the club will become a permanent arrangement, with the Wellington Phoenix captain likely to return to New Zealand.

Jamie Coyne will try to resurrect his career tonight when he takes to the field for Sydney FC in their trial match against Parramatta Eagles at Macquarie University.

Coyne, 30, was only hours away from being signed by the Sky Blues before the deadline for Asian Champions League player registrations but it fell through after he failed to secure compensation from Perth Glory over a contract dispute.

Capable as a right back or defensive midfielder, Coyne is originally from Sydney and is known to be admired by coach Vitezslav Lavicka for his rugged approach and versatility.

News on the new CEO

Dirk Melton, currently the Bulldogs' general manager of marketing and commercial operations, and right-hand man to Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg, has been targeted by Sydney FC as potentially the right man to bring stability to a club that has gone through five chief executives in six seasons.

Sydney FC vice-chairman Scott Barlow, who is the son-in-law and board representative of club owner David Traktovenko, has been sorting through a list of candidates in recent months following the sudden resignation of Edwin Lugt in February.

Currently the list of applicants is down to two, with Melton pitted against former Wellington Phoenix CEO Tony Pignata for the job.

Pignata has been a long-time favourite for the position and was reportedly up against ex-Wests Tigers chief executive officer Scott Longmuir.

WITH the imposing figure of Kashima Antlers awaiting Sydney FC in their final Asian Champions League group match, tomorrow night's penultimate clash against Suwon Samsung Bluewings has taken on sudden-death proportions for the Sky Blues.

Their hopes of claiming victory on Korean soil recieved a big boost with coach Vitezslav Lavicka able to call upon defender Stephan Keller and forward David Williams for the clash after both were passed fit.

Sydney's line-up isn't expected to change much but Lavicka has experimented with Andrew Durante at right back in place of Shannon Cole. Durante spent much of training in his non-preferred position, allowing Keller to slot back into his pairing with Matt Jurman in the heart of defence. The formation will again be the 4-4-2 diamond used against Shanghai, when the strike pairing of Bruno Cazarine and Mark Bridge scored all three of Sydney's goals.

Lavicka said Keller's likely return did not equate to him earning a new contract, with the coach non-committal over whether the Swiss stopper had done enough to earn a new deal. On the flip side, Williams needs to decide whether he wants to stay with Sydney.

''We can re-sign or release Stephan when his contract is up in May but we haven't decided about what will happen,'' Lavicka said. ''David Williams knows the club is interested in him, he has told us he needs more time to make a decision. The club has offered a contract. When the ACL is over, we need to know his answer.''

Meanwhile, all that stands between Jamie Coyne and a return to his home town is the final stage of contract negotiations after he impressed in last Wednesday's trial match against Parramatta Eagles. Lavicka said Coyne had showcased his ability in the 1-1 draw but the rest of the youthful-looking team failed to meet expectations.

And its all over for another year.

Sydney FC's Asian Champions League campaign has come to shuddering halt in the group stage with Korean side Suwon Samsung Bluewings inflicting a 3-1 defeat on the A-League club.

Goals from Ha Tae-Goon, Croatian import Mato Neretljak and Yeom Ki-Hun put the nail in the Sky Blues' coffin, with Sydney striker Bruno Cazarine getting one back for the visitors at the Suwon World Cup Stadium on Tuesday night.

With Japanese heavyweights Kashima Antlers beating Shanghai Shenhua 2-0 earlier on Tuesday to go clear atop Group H, both teams were vying for second place before facing their last group match.

Suwon Samsung Bluewings 3 (Ha Tae-Goon 34, Mato Neretljak 50, Yeom Ki-Hun 80) bt Sydney FC 1 (Bruno Cazarine 51) at Suwon World Cup Stadium.

time to rebuild, the team, the club's image, everything, and spend some dosh in the process... If Sydney Kings can have ads on tv so can we, they had a massive losing streak yet pulled reasonable crowds ... at least try it for a season and see if the crowds increase.

The Sky Blues will stay in Korea for the next few days before flying to Japan for their final group match, against Kashima Antlers, which has nothing riding on it for either team except pride.

Kashima thrashed Vitezslav Lavicka's side 3-0 at the Sydney Football Stadium last month and it seems unlikely they could cause an upset in Japan, despite the home side's rocky domestic form in the J-League, where they are 12th.

McFlynn conceded Suwon were the better team on the night and deserved to take all three points.

''Obviously we were very disappointed with the result but I think Suwon are a very good side, especially at home,'' he said. ''They controlled a lot of the game and made it difficult for us to get into the game. It's frustrating, as lot of the boys put a lot of hard work and effort into the game but couldn't come away with anything.''

The only good news of the match against Suwon came in the continued goalscoring form of Bruno Cazarine, who bagged his third goal of the ACL campaign, perhaps justifying the decision to extend his contract for a further year.

Gan is one of the worst players in the league. He won't be with us next season but what's the bet he goes over to Malaysia and plays over there since he does have a Malaysian passport. Or else he'll just go back to the state leagues

A SEASON that promised so much but delivered so little ended for Sydney FC in exactly the manner it started: hope, then crushing disappointment.

It seems a lifetime ago that the Sky Blues were desperately unlucky not to defeat Melbourne Victory on the opening night of the A-League season. Yesterday, some 7800 kilometres away in Tokyo and in the Asian Champions League, Sydney were equally unlucky not to gain something against Kashima Antlers.

Sydney were neither of those at the National Stadium, and they plugged away honestly after taking a deserved first-half lead through Matt Jurman. His powerful header was never going to be stopped by goalkeeper Hitoshi Sogahata, a parting gift from the defender who has signed for Brisbane Roar next season.

Kashima would wind their way back into the game - they had to, for, unlike Sydney, top spot in the group and a guaranteed home match in the knockout stages was still up for grabs.

They equalised in the second half through Yuya Osako after a scramble in the penalty box. Somewhat unconvincingly, the Antlers were finally in the contest.

A draw, which would have been a creditable result for Sydney, still looked the most likely outcome when Mitsuo Ogasawara lined up his free kick on 84 minutes.

He drilled it low and to the right; the last place goalkeeper Liam Reddy was expecting it. As if in slow motion, the ball skidded under the feet of Sydney's wall, across the wet surface and inside the post.

How that single moment summed up the past nine months. Nothing has gone right for the Sky Blues.

JUST days after dumping several young players who failed to make the grade, Sydney FC have shown faith in their youth ranks to sign Nathan Sherlock and Joel Chianese on full-time deals.

The pair were star performers in Steve Corica's youth team last year, which finished fourth, and both featured in the club's Asian Champions League campaign after being included in the 25-man squad.

Chianese, 21, is an attacking midfielder who scored six goals in 18 matches for the youth team last season. Sherlock, also 21, has been groomed as a defender and was youth team captain this year, making 16 appearances after joining the club from Central Coast Mariners.

Despite bright starts for youth team products Kofi Danning, Brendan Gan and Antony Golec under former coach John Kosmina, the trio never found favour under Lavicka, who cut all three of them last week.

Also released are vice-captain Stuart Musialik and defender Stephan Keller, both of whom have been considering their options. Keller has spent the past month emailing every A-League club his resume.
