yes, like melbourne victory. it is a stupid name. although it will sound much better when the other team is called revolution (or melburnians or heart or whatever).

I thought it'd be impossible to come up with a worse name than 'Melbourne Heart', but 'Melbourne Melburnians' far surpasses it in stupidity on every level.

Well, that would be pretty stupid, IF that was the name, but it's not.

    Just "Melburnians". That's it.

They don't call Fiorentina, "Firenze Fiorentina" (or Florence Fiorentina), do they??

    Re: The Melbourne 2 Thread

    I get it. Hibernians.

But it's still a reasonably shithouse name.

I'm disappointed it was even considered.

Hope it comes down to Sporting and Revolution and that Sporting takes it. But seriously, who the hell let 'Melburnians' through?

Crap as Melbourne Heart is I don't think they could have picked a worse bunch of contenders.

Sporting and Melburnians are kind of trying too hard. Heart, like I say, is too schoolgirl. Revolution is kinda weird, but being an American, and generally liking the New England Revolution over the years, the name has become OK with me.

But what do I care? I'm a Vics fan. Gotta weigh in on everything, I do.

    Re: The Melbourne 2 Thread

You don't come from or live in Melbourne, so I would say that you still don't 100% "get it". Personally, I think "Melburnians" is the best suggestion:

    1. It sounds traditional, as you say, along the lines of "Hibernian" and "Corinthians", and therefore quite different from any of the existing A-League (and MLS for that matter) club names, most of which are rubbish.

    2. It is a one-word name (again unlike other A-League names), and puts it in the same category as great club names such as Juventus, Arsenal or Celtic. (Not saying the club will be like these clubs, just that a one-word name can be iconic.... like Madonna or Sting!!) Actually, the club name that Melburnians has the most in common with is Fiorentina (sorry to use the same example) - both refer to the city's inhabitants, but both have different spellings compared to the name of the city itself:
    Melbourne ----> Melburnians
    Firenze (Florence) ----> Fiorentina

    Therefore, Vote 1: Melburnians!!! :D

I get what you mean. Still can't warm to the idea, though. I've kind of grown used to hearing "Heart," if anything

That aside, Jesper Olsen! I don't know if I can hate the club, just yet.

    Re: The Melbourne 2 Thread

It's kinds ironic if they decide on "Melbourne Revolution." Melbourne and Boston are sister cities, and one can ponder that this team could be forging a partnership with the New England Revolution.

    On the other hand...picture this.
    Heart vs. Victory.
    The Swan Street Showdown.

    Coming Soon.

EDIT: One more thing...if it's Sporting Melbourne FC, they must get a partnership with Sporting Lisbon a la Real Salt Lake's contract with Real Madrid.

    Some good signings:

    http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/a-league/colosimo-and-trio-join-heart-260272

And even better (for them anyway):

    http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/a-league/heart-set-to-bring-skoko-home-260402

By the way Melbournians would be a lame name!!! I'm from Victoria and that name would be laughed at by most people.

    Re: The Melbourne 2 Thread

I can't even see it happening. Particularly Viduka, for those obvious reasons.

It would obviously be a massive drawcard to have both players, and people would stampede through the gates, but I see those kinds of signings being more Ufuk Talay than Robbie Fowler. You could get your bang for your buck, when they play, but getting them ready to play regularly will be the problem.
I may be wrong about Skoko, in that regard, but playing in Croatia isn't exactly as physically demanding on the body as Australia, and his age might not allow him to handle as many knocks. Doesn't mean he isn't likely to sign, though.

All the best to them in getting the players they want, though. The more exciting lineups we see, the better.

That's just wrong... and BTW it's "Melburnians"!
(How many times must we go over this?)

Anyway, I reckon you'll get your wish. I think it will be either Sporting Melbourne or else they'll just stick with Melbourne Heart (shocking name IMO).
    We'll find out tomorrow...

    Pedant!!! :D

It'll be interesting whatever happens. I think their in a bit of a lose lose situation here - they'll get criticised for whatever they call it. Then again there are already some pretty aweful names in the league - you just get used to them after awhile.

Anyone got any ideas for nicknames yet??

    Re: The Melbourne 2 Thread

I dont know why the hatred towards Heart, I think its a great name, also Glory, Victory, Mariners, Jets, Phoenix and Fury are very good too.

The only name I have abit of trouble with is 'Roar' it just doesnt roll off the tounge very well, plus I think the fans would feel a bit silly going roar roar roar roar, the name definitely has to change, maybe to Lions, who cares if the AFL have that already, they dont have ownership of the word, Brisbane Lions FC sounds a lot better than Brisbane Roar.

    pulls on flame suit.

rubbish, heart is a good name mate, to have heart means your strong and courageous.
When I played rugby league the biggest insult you could cop was to have no heart or ticker.

    its wanderers, and er um..no.
I like magic or maybe better Melbourne Magestic, that would have been a good name too.
    Just think Victory v Magestic.
A good emblem would have been of course a crown or some crowns, scepter(sp) etc all the symbols of royalty.

You know what, your right that would suit them, it really fits the last piece of the puzzle. I would go with Melbourne Magestic over Melbourne Magic, but still a good suggestion.

Melbourne City, Melbourne FC, Melbourne Heart, or bust.

Hell, as long as they get it over and done with soon, I suppose I'll be happy.
