Not much rain in Melbourne, so that name is out.

I like the names Olympic and Athletic and City, the first two would have been perfect if they played out of Olympic Park.

Hopefully Melbourne Victory will snap up one of those names, as Victory is a stupid name and more often than not, they are not victorious.

Melbourne’s new A-League team is believed to have reached agreement with an experienced Dutch coach to take charge for its inaugural season. The club, using the working title of Melbourne Heart, will join the competition in 2010, and is determined to hit the ground running in what’s likely to become a titanic rivalry with its Swan Street co-tenants, Melbourne Victory.

Contrary to some reports, the inaugural coach won’t be Ruud Gullit but another Dutchman with lengthy experience in the Dutch league.

Dutchman Henk Van Stee has landed the job of inaugural coach at A-League expansion outfit Melbourne Heart.

Van Stee, who parted company with De Graafschap in March as the Netherlands outfit tumbled towards relegation from the top flight, could be unveiled as early as today by the team set to join the competition in 2010-2011.

The one-time Sparta Rotterdam midfielder has close connections with Socceroos boss Pim Verbeek, who had an advisory role on his appointment.

A former youth team boss at the youth teams of AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord, he beat off the challenge of eight other applicants to grab the top job.

A Melbourne Heart insider said: "We thought we was the best equipped of the eight candidates. There’s a big Dutch presence at the top end of Australian football already and we like the direction that has taken.

"He can’t start recruiting officially until October, but it’s obvious that the sooner he gets here the better because there’s a lot to be done before we enter the competition next season.

The Heart’s structure is fast taking shape now with Scott Munn, who played a key role in setting up the bid application for the Gold Coast AFL club, the chief executive.

Peter Sidwell is the chairman and a handful of directors including Michael Catalano and Manny Galanos who have links to the Victorian Premier League are on the board.

A-League club-in-waiting Melbourne Heart will move a step closer to securing their inaugural coach after a board meeting on Monday night.

The Heart, set to enter the new league next season, are believed to have assembled a shortlist of overseas-based candidates for the role which will be among the topics discussed by the board.

The club have indicated they are particularly interested in hiring a coach from The Netherlands - keeping in step with Australia's recent trend of importing expertise from the respected Dutch coaching system.

Ex-Holland and Ajax assistant coach John van't Schip is the latest to be linked with the role.

New Heart football operations manager John Didulica started in the job on Monday, and admitted the club will step up their planning for entering the league over the next few weeks.

Other important matters likely to be addressed soon are the club's official name - with Melbourne Heart just a working title for the new franchise - and the colours of their jersey.

Mebourne Heart want Colosimo

The A-League franchise-in-waiting aim to construct their defence around Simon Colosimo when they entre the A-League next season.

The new club, who will ditch their working title later this year because it’s already been registered elsewhere, are also in the hunt for another displaced Melbourne native in Ljubo Milicevic, whose contract with the Newcastle Jets is also due to expire next June.

Didulica views the pair as the perfect central defensive foundation on which to build a back four which he also wants to feature Adelaide United’s fringe Socceroo Scott Jamison, whose Reds contract is also running down.

The quest for a coach has come down to two candidates, former Holland and Ajax assistant coach John van't Schip and another foreign coach, with a final decision likely to be reached by the middle of the month. Both have been invited to meet the board, outline their vision for the team and an appointment will follow almost immediately after that with the terms of a proposed two-year already pre-determined.

Part of the criteria for the successful candidate will be the ability to attract a raft of international players, with the club committed to filling its quota of five.

The club’s final name will be determined in a competition run through the Melbourne Herald Sun newspaper, in which fans get the chance to suggest their own moniker, with Real Melbourne and Melbourne United currently in vogue in the early running.

Munn is expecting to attract crowds of around 15,000 to the new purpose-built rectangular stadium they will share with the Victory on the old Olympic Park site.

Dutchman John van't Schip has been appointed as the inaugural coach of A-League club-in-waiting Melbourne Heart.

The Ajax Amsterdam assistant coach has agreed to a two-year deal with the Heart, who enter the A-League next season.

The 45-year-old van't Schip played 41 internationals for the Netherlands from 1986-95.

The winger's impressive playing pedigree also included stints with Ajax and Italian club Genoa.

He was the Dutch assistant coach under Marco van Basten from 2004-08.

A-League newcomers Melbourne Heart could look to Socceroos goalkeeper Michael Petkovic to wear the gloves in their inaugural 2010-11 campaign.

Petkovic, currently with Turkish Super League outfit Sivasspor, has voiced a desire to return home and play in the A-League.

"It's something that I've always wanted to do," said 33-year-old Petkovic, who comes off contract at Sivasspor after this European season.

"I started my career in Australia in the national league back then, so with the new league that's been formed there, I'd like to go back and play as long as I can before I finish my career.

"We'll see, we've still got time, we'll see what happens after this season."

Ex-Socceroos midfielder Josip Skoko has revealed he has held initial discussions with Melbourne Heart and that the prospect of joining the A-League expansion club in its inaugural season is "exciting and interesting".

Capped 51 times by his country, the elegant playmaker is currently in his second spell with Hajduk Split but will return home at the end of the season and is set to meet Heart’s Dutch coach John van’t Schip within the next few weeks as he traverses Europe seeking to pick up players for the club’s entry into the A-League in 2010.

Heart’s football operations manager John Didulica has already sounded out the Geelong-raised 33-year-old and while Skoko’s appetite for European football has diminished after a 14-year odyssey which has taken him to Hajduk twice, Genk, Genclerberligi and Wigan, he is happy to consider extending his career back where it all began in Victoria.

“The hunger isn’t there anymore for me in Croatia and this will be my last season but maybe what I need is a challenge and the Heart could be it," he told The World Game.

“I’ll be happy to meet with John van’t Schip. I’ve already had a few discussions with John Didulica and a big part of me would like to put something back into the Australian game.

“It would be good to do my bit to help the A-League flourish. My body is feeling good. I’ve avoided major injuries and the Heart could be a very interesting and exciting project for me. Melbourne is one of the world’s best sporting cities and I have no doubt it can support two A-League teams.

Bleah. I like more traditional names usually. Hearts would be OK. Heart sounds too WNBA-ish (for those that understand American references ). Sounds like they are courting Year 7 girls.

Of course, I admit "Victory" was hard to get used to, but it was the name of a California-based USL-1 team that I was kind of rooting on.
