One of the clips shows his leaping ability. It was rumored(and probably true) that he had a standing vertical jump of 90 cm(35 inches). Most measurements today are taken with one foot allowed a step(due to a basketball rule and this measurement is more important in basketball than in any other sports). In that context you should expect him to jump in excess of 40 inches. We are talking about michael jordan class.

Oh!! and other things like his thigh measurement... 24 inches. He had good sized thighs even for a long track speed skater or cycler.

There will be another Cha Boom but it's one of those once or twice a life time event. I may not see it but others much younger than me may. Along this line, some of things I thought I would never see but happened in my lifetime:

    - Park Chan Ho making it big time in Major Leagues
    - Pak Se Ri in winning LPGA majors
    - Korean Men's NT finishing 4th in WC02
    - Communist bloc collapse

Other things I would like to see but not likely to happen in my lifetime:

    - Korean Olympic golds in swimming, track (other than Marathon)
    - SK & NK unite (or at least taking concrete steps to unite)

This poll is about centre forwards only. That`s why players like Karl-Heinz Rummenigge or Pierre Littbarski are not included.

Just noticed there are no pictures of Cha Bum-keun celebrating winning the K-League, an achievement he rated as being better than winning the UEFA Cup as player.

No doubt Ali Daei was an excellent player in his prime. I believe the Saudi player you're mentioning is Abdullah Majed. He came in third.
For Ali Karimi, Vehid Hashemian and Mahdavikia, I don't think they can be mentioned alongside Cha. The latter two are not even starters let alone set a league record for the "then-strongest league in the world."
Back in Cha's days, the Bundesliga was the strongest league in the world, and the UEFA Cup was as competitive and prestigious as the Champions League. Too bad it all changed.

i second your vote for Cha. And i do believe Cha Doo Ri has the potential to be just like his father. Cha Doori has the speed, size, footwork. Just needs to brush up on his skill. haha.

For current Asian player of 2004 and 2005, I'd nominate Lee dong gook because of his scoring punch. He does make some sick goals too.

When was this poll taken? I would place Hong Myung-bo higher than 16, for his longevity and especially after his achievements in 2002.

Definately before 2002 since it's the "Asian Player of the Century" for the 20th century.

It was done by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics.(IFFHS)

Re: Official Asian Player of the Century thread

This poll was taken in 1999 and only for "performances during the 20th Century". So it's impossible to compare Daei, Ono, Karimi, Hashemian, Mahdavikia, Nakata, Park, Nakurama and other Asian stars who are still playing to Cha who is no longer playing. For a fair comparison, we'd have to wait untill those players' careers are over and they have achieved the best they can and we know what their legacy is.

As for the Asian players whose career was limited to the the 20th Century, Cha was the best of them all as the poll suggests. That's his legacy.

Sun Jihay is the best Asian player Ever. He is the player of the century that poll was a fraud.

Anyways Cha was Chinese to begin with so...
Chinese Cha thats what we call him. He couldn't even start for our B team so we sent him and his family to China Jr. aka Korea.

and hence the title "Asia's best Player of the Century."

actually, it's not "impossible." Had they achieved more than Cha before the turn of the century, they would have snapped the award. Unfortunately, no one did.

Other Asian stars like Ahn, Hong, Nakata, Hwang, Ono, YP Lee, Mahdavikia, Nakamura, Daei, Park etc will just have to aim the "Asian Player of the 21st Century."

If they weren't sufficient enough to compete in the 20th century award, they should try the 21st century. Hey, at least these guys are lucky enough to try 2 times. ;) Old players like Hong, Hwang, and Ali Daei will probably not earn anything since most of what they achieved were in the 20th century. And non of them were even in the top 6 of the 20th Century award.

We'll just have to wait until 2099 and see who wins the award for the 21st century. My guess is that we'll see plenty more amazing players until then.

Definately. For another notice, while celebrating the 50th anniversary, the AFC decided last year to award the player that shined Asia with the "Golden Player" award. Media release noted that Cha got a unanimous pick. While they recommended all federations to propose a candidate, the AFC automatically put up Cha even before the KFA even recommended him.

Re: Official Asian Player of the Century thread

Most of Ali Daei's achievements were after this poll was conducted in 1999. Daei joined Bayern Munich in 1999. Daei became the first Asian player to feature in the UEFA Champions League after 1999. Daei became the first Asian player to score in the UEFA Champions League after 1999. Furthermore, Ali Daei is already the world's best scorer of all times. I don't think he needs to achieve anything beyond that.
I cound't find a single source in English about any "Golden Player" award in Asia apart from an old post of yours on BigSoccer citing a Korean source. I even searched AFC wesbite's golden jubilee section and still cound't find any mention of such award. I've also never heard about this, so I'd appreciate it if you could provide a source in English.

I don't think Daei made Bayern Munich great. If u didn't know, Bayern Munich were already one of the best clubs in the world. :D

And i'm not sure how good Frankfurt was when Cha arrived there, but i highly doubt Frankfurt was as good as Bayern Munich or any other top clubs. And what did he do? win a UEFA cup with them. When he arrived to Leverkusen, well i don't think Leverkusen were a great club either. And what did they do? Win a Uefa cup and which Cha was a big part of. Cha obviously made big influences on these two clubs, Daei did not.

And only reason why Daei has that many international goals is because there are so many weak Asian NTs. So i think you need to stop showing off on how good Daei can score against Laos.

Re: Official Asian Player of the Century thread

The same "weak Asian NTs" South Korean players score against in the same confederation. Yet surprisingly, no South Korean player has ever scored more than 55 international goals which is 49 goals short of Ali Daei's 104 international goals.

    Of Daei's 104 international goals:

    - 21 goals were scored against Tier 1 Asian Teams. Tier 1 Asian Teams are qualified as:

Japan (scored 3 against them), South Korea (4), Saudi Arabia (4), Iraq (4), China (3) and Uzbekistan (3).

    - 35 goals were scored against Tier 2 Asian teams. Tier 2 Asian Teams are qualified as:

    Bahrain (4), Jordan (3), Kuwait (4), Lebanon (6), North Korea (2), Oman (4), Qatar (4), Syria (4), Thailand (3) and UAE (1).

    - 37 goals were scored against Tier 3 Asian teams. Tier 3 Asian Teams are the rest:
    Guam (4), Kyrgyzestan (1), Laos (8), Maldives (8), Nepal (5), Sri Lanka (5), Taiwan (3), Tajikistan (3)

    - 5 goals have been scored against European countries.

    - 3 goals have been scored each against CONCAF and South American countries.

    - 1 goal has been scored against African countries.

That's because Cha Bum Keun wasn't on the National Squad for about 8 years. He played from 72-78 and then i think he was asserted back in the NT in 86 for the World Cup.
