I've heard about this from almost all the Koreans that visited Germany. So many German football fans who were present in the late 70s~80s remember him.
Another episode: During WC2002, Cha commented on the German National Team's performance against Paraguay. He said that's one of the worst performances he's ever seen from a German NT. (Cha usually has more to say about the German NT as he feels closer to the German team than any other non-Korean teams) His comment spreads out in German media and the German NT head coach as well as Cha's friend Rudi Voller counters by saying "Cha's head must have gone wrong after taking so many aspirins while he played at Leverkusen." The German media as well as the public felt Voller went over the line and Voller become aware of that and later on meets Cha and apologizes to him. Cha responds "It's no problem. I understand the stress a head coach has to face." The two are now close friends again by the way. Voller going to Cha and apologizing was never to happen had Cha been a normal player.
What numbers did Cha use throughout his career? When he was playing for Leverkusen, SK NT, etc etc.. I've been trying to look for this info.
How did Cha Bum-keun go to Germany in the first place? How did the German scouts find out about him? I guess it would have actually been easier for Koreans to go then since there weren't any K-League teams. Then again, Korea was a much smaller nation in terms of football stature back then.

Fantastic work compiling that information on Cha Bum-Keun. I was only vaguely aware of his Bundesliga accomplishments until now. And to think I was parading around as a Korean football fan! One a related note, is Cha Bum-Keun memorabilia readily available in Korea at all? I'd love to get a poster sized print of Cha in action.

Re: Official Asian Player of the Century thread Asian Football Confederation(AFC) has chosen Bum-keun Cha as the "Golden Player" celebrating the 50th anniversary of AFC. AFC had been accepting recommendations from football associations under AFC to decide the "Golden,Silver,Bronze Player" since the creation of the AFC. Re: Official Asian Player of the Century thread yes...it is unbelievable Cha did not make the list...i understand that this sort of list can be very political and be sometimes downright stupid, but if FIFA decided to allocate one spot to Korea, then it should have been Cha...it insults intelligence of anyone who knows anything about his accomplishment not just as a korean footballer but what he has done to bring global attention to asian football as whole.
