Why do people say this? It happens from time to time on Big Soccer. Have you never heard a fan of a club speak collectively when discussing matter of the team they support? I don't even see why you would care.
It's meant in the same way as when my 94 year old grandmother says, "I'm playing basketball tonight" when she is planning on watching the Lakers game. I always get a kick out of it! For the same reason fans are the "12th man".
After all those "thank you fans" speeches where virtually every player admitted that they "could not have done it" without us, I think we are all justified in saying "we" when we talk about the team.,
Not that is matters here, but Chick Hearn used to rip his color men every time they said "we". He made it a point of pride to distinguish been the team and the announcers and fans. Of course he also said "Your Los Angeles Lakers" also.
Looks to me like we're rolling the dice (which you can afford to do when you are back-to-back champs.... ). Hesmer and Clark were both top-10 talents at their positions before injuries took their toll on them. If either of them can regain their form and health, they would be a great addition to the team. Especially Clark, who addresses a need (pacey winger).
IIRC, the draft is two rounds and then the supplemental draft is two rounds and the difference is that players taken from the draft must be offered a contract (although they can refuse it) while supplemental picks don't have to be offered a roster spot.
I'll remember to watch my language when I become Joe's color commentator, but until then I may use "we" when I talk about "my" team. (Little does Phil know...)
Any fan who loves this club and spends they're hard earned money on merchandise, tickets, parking and especially anyone who's paid $8 for a NyQuil shot glass size beer. That is "WE" and we don't play for the galaxy the galaxy play for us.
I'll tell you who "we" AREN'T: pedantic gits who get our knickers in a twist over a common figure of speech.
Sorry, but this kind of comment drives me nuts. "We" are the Galaxy....and that "we" absolutely includes the fans. If you can't identify with a team and freely call it "we," then...l'm at a loss for words.
Another perspective on this. When my mates know the Galaxy have played (or Chelsea depending on which side of the pond they're on) they ask me, "how did you play", "did you win". They don't ask "how did your team do". So even from the outside looking in, the fans are viewed as a collective part of the club. In fact I'm pretty sure my first words to my Dad at the age of 6 months (I developed fast what can I say) were: "Did we beat Tottenham?" and he didn't correct me on my figure of speech. However he did tell me not to use such foul language and repeated use of the T-word in his house would result in a complete cessation of milk rations. Tell you what though, I'm having dinner with Mr Klein tonight and I will ask him whether use of the 'we' by the fans bothers him. Will let you know what he says tomorrow.
The Buddle move didn't surprise me at all. He doesn't mesh with either our possession game or our counterattacking game. Getting allocation money and subtracting his salary is a reasonable deal. I'm also not as down on Saunders as others are. I think he's serviceable and it would be costly to make a significant improvement. My guess is that he was holding out in contract negotiations and getting Hesmer is part of our negotiating strategy.
Years ago someone did a study of the use of "we" vs "they" by sports fans. I believe it was NFL fans but doesn't matter. They randomly called people and asked them how their hometown team X did in the previous game. They found that if the team won they usually said "WE won!" But if the outcome was bad they tended to say "THEY lost." So I guess most of us are unconsciously fair-weather fans to some extent!
Assuming we re-sign everybody, and we don't get another DP, right now we are: ------Keane---Donovan---- Magee---Sarvas---Franklin ----------Juninho------------ Dunivant-Meyer-Gonzo-AJ ----------Saunders----------- What we need: 1) A starting right mid. Either one of the Brazilians from SP or an international player, probably during the summer window. 2) More midfield depth. Again, maybe the Brazilians. 3) Another forward. However, ruling out a DP (like LF) or Zardes, I'm not sure I want to spend a lot of money on a backup given that we have the homegrowns and Magee. 4) Defensive depth through the draft
