Raise your hand if you had Ricketts going for allocation money only.

    Yeah, me, neither.

I gotta think there'd be more to it. Draft pick? Arnaud? Ricketts is worth more than that.

Wow. Can't say I'm surprised he's gone, but he will be missed.

I don’t think it’s anything more than allocation money. As an expansion club Montreal had some to go around. One of the realities of being the Galaxy is we need allocation money more than most clubs to keep our role players like Sean, AJ, et. al., around. Depending on the size of the allocation it could also be used to help acquire the services of Juninho on a permanent basis.

Bummed to see Ricketts leave, he always had a smile on his face and seemed like a real good guy. Sad facts of MLS, it’s tough to keep the team you want.

I'd always liked Ricketts and he put up great numbers. Hope his success continues on Montreal. It was a smart move by the Galaxy.

Why was it a smart move?

Maybe when becks leaves we'll get Joe cannon back.

very smart move (Ricketts). loved the big cat, but we have a very good keeper in Sounders and an up and coming keeper in Perk. hoping the $ goes toward keeping Juni on board.

even though keepers tend to last more than any other player, Ricketts is already going on 35 this coming year.

Add to that his ARM surgery, and he really won't be the same for a while.

Saunders got the time he needed to improve his reflexes and such in "real" games. Saunders will be our keeper for while....

AND we have Perk, while small, has lots of potential!

I'd rather have traded Ricketts and be able to keep Juninho (etc) with the allocaton money, then have Ricketts rust up on the bench.

yeah paying down any transfer fee money could be a huge thing for keeping us under the cap, especially if we have to break the bank for Juninho and/or a Beckham replacement.

    No Cannon OR Yallop please!

Smart move to free up some cap space. We made it throughout the year without him basically. Who is our backup? Perk? Or would that be Mike Magee :)

Ive heard Perk is decent... although his is a lot shorter than Ricketts or Saunders.

I think its a great move. They Need that allocation money to lock down Juni. They had to get money from somewhere to keep him. And I think Saunders is just the better between the two.

I wonder if they basically traded Ricketts for Cardozo and allocation money, because the only reason we didn't expose Ricketts was for his trade value. Perhaps Montreal agreed not to take Cardozo in the expansion draft if we would trade Ricketts to them rather than someone else.

By the way, wasn't Ricketts on the travel list for the Asia tour? Does he have to turn around and fly back 17 hours? That's kind of harsh.

I have a sneaky suspicion that Ricketts isn't done moving around the league... Seattle perhaps?

I don’t think so when you look at the acquisitions Montreal made in the draft. Cardoza doesn’t fit the mold of what Marsch was picking up.

He was, but didn’t travel. From the article

    how much allocation money!?
we can't debate how good of a deal it was till we know this number since LA might have gotten a very healthy sum

Really big strategic move by the Galaxy - I think we had to do it because of Rickett's salary and his value in the market. We may have gotten some good $$ for him, and that will definitely help.

He was huge for us in turning around our leaky defense and making Bruce's time here a success. Bruce owes him big time. I wish him well in Montreal.

They must have been working on a deal for awhile to keep him off the plane to Asia.

All depends on how much $$, and what we do with it. It's a pig in a poke until we know those things.

Sad to see him go. He was a big part of our resurgence. I understand that with the cap someone had to go, and being two deep at keeper doesn't really work when it's two top-5 keepers. Still will miss him. This should also open up an international roster spot, right?

    Re: 2011-12 Offseason Moves Thread

I think this is clearly the move. We're trying to amass the "allocation money" that will be required to purchase Juni outright from his Brazilian club.

This is the MLS we all know and love. hard decisions to be made every year no matter how rich your owners are.

He was such a BIG improvement over Cronin. Saved us many many times when we had a shaky backline. Hate to see him gone.

I didn't mean that Marsch actually wanted Cardozo, but he could have picked him and held him hostage until we gave them Ricketts.

Allocation money always seems to be a mystery. I don’t think there has ever been a revelation about allocation money in any capacity.

Past performance isn’t proof of anything, but Bruce has proven he knows a fair amount about his trades regardless of the “outrage” we express on the board. There were a lot of people, myself included, not happy when Ricketts was signed. I have to assume Bruce and Kevin know exactly what allocation amount they need to keep/acquire the players they want.
