There was a lot of rioting in Rome today after Berlusconi survived a confidence vote in the senate and parliament. Lot's of rumors of senators having sold their votes to Berlusconi. Here are some pictures of the protests in Rome
do u think the game between Roma & Milan will have troubles? Are all Roma fans diehard anti-berlusconi?
I'd like to think Roma fans have enough sense to be anti-Berlu. Only in Italy could a guy like that be in power, I can't think of another major western democracy that allows their PM to do what he does.
Well, I recall some time back. One of Berlusconi allies called Roman's pigs. And Totti replied to him, that if he says that between roma fans they will bodily harm him. There is unrest in Rome, I also read in Palermo AND TURIN there is unrest. What about city of Bilan?
Some good pictures of the rioting: http://blogs.sacbee.com/photos/2010/12/protesters-rampage-as-berlusco.html#mi_rss=The Frame

Jesus Christ. What the hell is wrong with Italy? It seems like the least civilized country in Western europe. I'm not slating the rioters alone here either. They could have been close to the right in this situation (excluding the violence). Berlasconi is a clown and the entire government seems corrupt. Then what happened in Naples with all the trash building up? Then there is the mob and football hooligans. I realize these problems exist most other places but they seem to be out of control in Italy. They really need to sort themselves out and I hope they can because it's such a beautiful and culturally important place.
There's more culture and civilization in my town's sewers than in the whole state of Maryland...e poi avete votato Bush e Clinton, altro che il berlusca...ma che cazzo vuoi?? As for Naples...ever been to Tacoma??
I know. I admitted as much. I wasn't trying to be inflammatory, but you must admit it is a place that needs more fixing than several of its "peers".
Eh, cazzo, che rischio, chissà se ci finivi in mezzo cosa ti succedeva... Ma per curiosità...da quant'è che vivi in Itaglia?? Una settimana?? Anyway, most of those riots were unrelated to today's vote of confidence. It's not like Fini or some other neo-liberal clown would be any better for the students and the working class.
What peers?? We obviously have nothing in common with Anglo, Nordic or Germanic countries...radically different cultures. We need fixings just like any other country that based (or was forced to base) its economic development on the crap spewed by the University of Chicago. Seeing people rioting against some of those dumb policies (cutting social expenses to better guarantee banks and better fulfill ECB's mindless requirements, privatizing the university system) certainly is a step towards the right direction.
Your posts are usually very blunt and straight to the point . If you don’t mind could you, or anyone who lives in Italy and knows, enlighten me on what’s going on? A few friends of mine in Italy are going nuts right now over the Berlusconi vote, but they are HARCORE liberal. My cousin who lives in Rome, is not very interested in politics, so asking her would probably get me nowhere. All I can gather right now is that students are upset over the proposed budget cuts and of course Berlusconi staying in power.
I didn't know there were riots going on, as I'm not Italian, only have down the basics of the language so far (thank you Babylon for your assistance in helping me understand what mattteo was saying), and don't pay attention to Italian politics. I was innocently heading to my first day of work and going the only way I knew how to get there. If there had been actual violence at the time I was passing by I would have gone right back down the stairs into the Metro station and gone back home. As it was, there were only the police there, so I took some pictures and kept going. I thought you guys might be interested in my pictures since the topic was brought up, so I posted my view of the situation. Forgive me, please, if I offended you or caused you to question my integrity or my intelligence. Oh dear mighty mattteo, where would I be without you?! For your curiosity, I've been in Rome since August 25.
What?? I was just commenting the tags on your pictures and didn't make any reference to your 'integrity' or 'intelligence'...I don't even know who you are. But yeah, I figured you've been living in Rome for a very short time...otherwise you wouldn't be shocked by what happened yesterday at all....protests happen every year.
The fact is....people are finally realizing who is really paying the economic crisis. And are rightfully pissed off at the government. Yesterday, on the streets in Rome, there were students, factory workers, victims of the Aquila earthquake..there is widespread turmoil and there has been for months, even when the government was in full control. The cuts are a big reason, seeing the government cut public school budget and raising private school budget is simply unacceptable...the working contract reform attempts are also a big reason, with FIAT and Italy's industrial association trying to delete basic worker rights (strikes, holidays, breaks) and the government fully supporting them... As for Berlusconi...yesterday he survived by 3 votes, corrupting some former minority deputies who suddenly jumped ship and started supporting him...but it's very clear he will not be able to go on...especially since some of the majority deputies also hold government spots and will seldom be able to take part in the votings...he's finished unless he manages to persuade the Christian Democrats in supporting him.
Interesting, thanks for the input. If I were a citizen of Italy, I would definitely be pissed off like the rest of you guys. I am going to be studying in Abruzzo next year for about 7 to 8 months, you think Berlusconi will survive that long?
As I said, it depends on his ability to create a new majority by involving some of the political parties that are currently against him. I'd say yes. Christian Democrats can be 'convinced' with money and chairs and the Northern League (who don't really see eye to eye with the CDs...who get most of their votes in the South and behave accordingly) bark but in the end are completely dependent on Berlusconi.
Where did I say I was shocked? I use the because I had never actually SEEN a riot before, not because I was shocked that there was one. I know enough about Italy to know that the people here are crazy. I've lived in Vienna and have traveled around a good portion of central and eastern Europe (hell, I spent Christmas in Minsk once). There isn't much that happens here that shocks me anymore. Your comment, translated with http://translation.babylon.com , was: EH, dick, THAT RISK, who knows if you had finished in the middle there what you was happening... But curiosity... from whatever is that live in itaglia?? A week?? Hence the reason I was insulted... plus, a post that uses is usually an insulting post.
These protests are just the beginning once everyone realizes that the Rothchilds and Co have basically stolen everyones future and all the politicians are in their pockets.
Yes, because that's what the 300 year old Rothschild family are in the banking game for, making a quick buck and causing massive instability in markets.
Merry Xmas and Happy new year to all my Brothers in this section.Lets hope in 2011, Will see Roma lifitng trophies and get a rich owner to achieve our dreams
