Its pretty cool that the Cosmos will be back. Hey maybe we will see a new Chicago Sting as well? I have to wonder though, with a name like the Cosmos bring to the table, the history of that club, will this perhaps set the stage for a setup with MLS to do a promotion/relugation or am I just clinging to a pipe dream with very little possibilty of it ever happening? Or can we expect the Cosmos to "expand" into MLS at some future date?
I was actually asking myself the same thing about the LA Aztecs, though I would be very surprised... I like your thinking, but I'm inclined to say "pipe dream"
You're just clinging to a pipe dream. It'll be half a century if ever before pro/rel is added to US soccer. It's been set up too much like American franchised sports and frankly I think the owners like it that way. As for the Cosmos doing a Seattle/Portland/Vancouver/Montreal type deal where they get the expansion team and name it after the D2 team I'm sure that's what the Cosmos owners are hoping to do. But it doesn't necessarily have to be the Cosmos owners who are granted the MLS NYC2 franchise. The Cosmos could end up like the Toronto Lynx as well. But given that the last 4 MLS expansion teams have come from the D2 ranks the odds are in their favor IF they have the money and planning to make it happen.
Because the only way a team in NASL can get to MLS is via pro/rel..... This is just a bit of gamesmanship by the owners of the Cosmos brand. They are hoping that by getting a NASL team and making it successful they can jump into the leadership position of getting the NY2 franchise. They've got the NASL team, now they just need to make it successful.
I wouldn't be surprised if the owners come out with a soccer specific stadium in the near future to cement themselves as the front runner for the NYC-2 franchise.... that is if they have the money which I don't know personally if they do or not
Until MLS, yes. You know I have no argument against that. Speaking of, I am concerned about this move, and I am seeing a very bad scenario potentially in play: What happens if the Cosmos are "promoted" as the identity of NYC2 in MLS?
The only way that happens is if the NASL owners are involved. They own the intellectual property now.
Population wise they definitely could but interest wise I don't think so. Look at LA, the LA Blues averaged 382 fans during the 2011 season. Not sure what the numbers are this year but that's an awful statistic. As for MLS-NY2 franchise not being the Cosmos, it is very realistic especially if a very rich owner comes along. However I'm suspecting that the MLS is going to give the owner of the Cosmos every chance to put together an offer because lets just be honest, with the Cosmos comes brand recognition. No matter how small or minuscule you think it might be, it still brings a "name" which in this day and age for the MLS is a step forward.
What happened when Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, and Montreal joined MLS? The only way the Cosmos appear in MLS is if the Saudis are involved in the NY2 ownership group, or the NY2 ownership group pays them a pile of money for the brand.
There's no way in hell the owner of NY2, whoever it is, won't utilize the Cosmos brand. If it's not the current owners of the brand, whoever gets the MLS expansion franchise will buy the brand.
I occupied Hofstra for five semesters back in the Wayne Chrebet days and can confirm artificial turf back then. Sadly, they dropped the football program a few years ago and still have the same rug. It's also used for field hockey and the really good lacrosse players too dumb for Johns Hopkins. An MLL team plays there, too. When I was a "student" there, the nearest LIRR station was quite a hike. It was closer walking to Mitchel Field one night in 1995 to destroy the drum that wasn't letting me sleep off a hangover. Turns out, I got to see the Rough Riders win the USISL. So yeah, dumb idea playing there.
I'd imagine so. But you never know. The NASL owners are denied entry they might not be feeling like making a deal.
California Clásico. In any case, congratulations to the New York Cosmos and here's to hoping that they eventually appear in MLS sooner rather than later. -G
They will never get as high a valuation on the Cosmos brand again if they pass it up though. If they passed up on the sale of the brand, their only option would be to ride it down to obscurity again.
