it is an official news outlet but i don't see that number coming from an actual team/league source ... it is just sort of in the article but unattributed. i will take opinions on this one from others .... should this count?
Houston Chronicle article from April 4, 2012: http://www.chron.com/sports/dynamo/article/New-stadium-sparks-financial-windfall-for-Dynamo-3459949.php
CONFIRMED: Seattle Sounders FC ------ 32,000 (2010) Toronto FC ---------------- 16,000 (2012) Portland Timbers FC ------- 14,750 (2012) Vancouver Whitecaps FC -- 13,000 (2012) Philadelphia Union - 12,000-13,000 (2011) Sporting Kansas City ------ 11,000 (2011) Houston Dynamo ---------- 10,000 (2012) Los Angeles Galaxy --------- 7,500 (2012) Montreal Impact ------------ 7,500 (2012) Real Salt Lake ------- 7,000-8,000 (2011) Chicago Fire --------------- 6,000 (2012) Columbus Crew ------------ 5,000 (2012) SPECULATIVE: Red Bull New York ----------- 7,800 (2012)
Interesting note, San Antonio Scorpions of the NASL, who haven't even played a game yet reportedly have 3,000 season ticket holders. Thats almost Crew-like #s. http://sacurrent.com/news/the-nonpr...onal-soccer-to-sa-but-will-it-stick-1.1294640
Interesting quote from that article. I wonder if the writer actually believes that this NASL is the remnants of the old NASL or is just confused. BTW, the asterisk behind Major League Soccer leads to this: The fact that the writer thought MLS was Major Soccer League makes me wonder about the research for the article.
He also mentions that SA almost had the Dynamo, which isn't true (it was the Wizs). But the season ticket count is a quote so I think he got that right. Actually the quote says they are exceeding 3,000.
I was in SA at the time so I know what he is talking about. SA was making a push for a team at the same time and then I heard about Houston going after San Jose and they were able to nab the team as SA had a political switch (the mayor) that lead to the demise of soccer support.
Yes but in no conversation were the Quakes/Dynamo ever going to SA. SA and Muirstein almost got a relocated KC Wizards and when the new mayor ended that conversation there was never another relocation to SA discussion.
I hate to defend the Crew but to go on what you've said, there is a difference in ticket prices and also time. I'd be more impressed if San Antonio was at 3000 in a few years. Not to hate on SA, best of luck to them, but its far to early to tell.
Yes, the SA fans tell me that they heard rumors, mostly because AEG was moving Quakes about the same time Garber and MLS said that the KC Wizards MIGHT move to SA. But the KC to SA story was actual news. The Quakes/Dynamo move to SA was just rumor and hearsay. And yes 5,000 is much more than 3,000. But for a new 2nd Div club to get +60% season tickets of a MLS club is significant. Either negative for MLS's lower level STH clubs or positive for the NASL clubs. Depends on POV.
KC to SA was absolutely a very real possibility for KC, although Hunt still was attempting to sell them locally, San Antonio, NYC2, and a host of other cities were candidates for KC.
I talked to the RSLFO president today. He mentioned that STH has just exceeded 8000 for 2012. No link, just an incredibly apologetic guy trying to alleviate a crisis by throwing us a bone.
i think i read early on that SA had some guy buy 1000 season tickets as a charitable donation or something like that .. so take that 3,000 with a grain of salt. the same way you can take the Orlando City numbers with a grain of salt, when i bought my season tickets they told me that every player that pays to be part of their newly acquired youth teams (formerly Central Florida Craze etc) has season tickets as part of those fees ... so all of those club youth team players that paid their typical youth club fees are also "season ticket holders". having said that i am sure both teams will have good attendances by D2/D3 standards.
The Dynamo are now over 12,000 STH. http://www.sbnation.com/soccer/2012/5/1/2991385/dynamo-top-12000-season-tickets-sold-for-2012

updated houston. i left the KC 12,500 and the RSL 8k off, but think they could be added with corroborating links. is the KC number available on any video clips?
Where did you find the San Jose number? A coach told me the quakes had 3,000-3,5000 STH's and that Historically around here, about one third are simply fans of pro sports. I.e., they will go to any pro game whether or not they know anything about the sport.
