So I know it's not really a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but does this issue grind anyone else's gears in the slightest bit? PJS is/was a bona fide KNT legend. To be honest I was quite shocked when I saw Kim Bo Kyung wearing the number so soon after PJS retired. I know Park announced him as a 'successor' but I always assumed that to be in reference to the future. Then I see Seo Jung Jin wearing the number too while KBK is out of action. Don't get me wrong I like the kid a lot even before the last couple of matches and thought he was a standout at the AG last year. But the number 7 for such a raw and unproven addition to the KNT? It just seems like the number should be given more respect, considering the man who wore it just a year ago as our captain. I'm not saying it should be retired, but that it shouldn't be given out cheaply either. It has to be earned, imo. If anything, LCY is next in line for it anyway so all of this is probably moot. Just something that I had on my mind and I wonder how all of you fellow KNT fans feel about it.
for me 7 is just a number. generally 1 is the keeper and 9/10 are the best players but other than that its whatever number u want... with clubs anything goes
imo 7 is for the best midfielder/winger while 10 is for the best attacker. When LCY returns to the squad, I think we will get a pretty good indication on whether he will be getting no.7. I always get the feeling it's going to be KBK or SHM getting the no.7 though.
I agree. Both LCY and KSY have had 17 and 16 for a while now. I don't think they'll change. And doesn't the KNT change around the numbers when it gets closer to the world cup anyway? Like PJS wearing #14 for that goal in Japan where he raped 4 defenders.
The number scrambling in that particular match was to confuse the Greeks I believe. Yeah, if LCY gets no.17 again when he returns, I don't think he will be the no.7 tbh.
A lot of famous players have worn the 7: Cristiano Ronaldo, Figo, Beckham. I would say after the 9, 10, and 1, 7 is next in line of importance because it's an attacker's number. Take this for what it's worth, but Steve Macmanaman called it the "captain's number." I personally think LCY should get the 7. Edit: "Importance" may not be the right word, but it has a mystique about it. Also, the numbers are less important now. When the WC rolls around, then we'll see what numbers everyone gets.
It's just a number. It seems like fans care more about a number being worn than the actual player. Once Raul retired, C. Ronaldo took his number 7... There was no out cry. Michael Owen took C. Ronaldo's number 7 at Man. Utd and yet there was no outcry...
You don't remember the story of SAF taking Ronaldo aside and explaining the importance of the number he was receiving and how he had to live up to it? And Michael Owen isn't a fresh-faced nobody, either. And I should qualify my LCY statement, because he actually wore #17 while #7 was available post-PJS, and KBK took it. I'm not sure why LCY didn't take it. He obviously covets the number since he was #27 at Seoul, #17 on KNT and #27 at Bolton. In each case it's because other people had taken the #7 or 17 (don't remember who at Seoul). IMO he should have gotten the number at Bolton this year and may indeed have if not for his injury, and then Chris Eagles coming in and taking it (wonder how Klasnic felt about that one).
I agree with the few that #7 is special - I think of it more as the number for the ace of the team. I personally hope to see #7 for LCY too. Maybe Ki gets #6 like Xavi (or #8 like Gerrard). #11 for Son (like Cha Boom!).
That's because Man United and Real have a tradition with the No. 7 shirt. We don't nor do we really need one.
+1. No.7 always goes to a special player in the national team..numbers always have a meaning in national teams, period.
Guys, that's funny discussion. Maybe I as a representant of European faction on this forum and a person who grew up in Europe will clear few things for you. It comes from ancient times when football wasn't so much commercialized and no one thought about selling shirts. The starters had usually worn shirts with numbers from 1 to 11. So they're traditionally tied to position on the pitch. The most representative is of course number 1 for GK. Other ones are 2 and 5 for CB. 10 was reserved for offensive MF, 9 and 11 for FW. 7 and 8 were usually assigned to wingers. There were times when You couldn't watch almost every game on screen of your computer so there were even cases when a CFW wore number 2 shirt to bring some knid of element of surprise. All your talks about any special meanings for the numbers are pretty laughable in my opinion. So what - number 7 wasn't special until PJS started wearing for KNT, right? Numbers are traditionally assigned to appropriate positions on the pitch. Nothing more, nothing less. That's how many nowadays fans starts stupid discussions like that. That means that You're probably from USA or somewhere else outside of Europe where the tradion aren't that big and don't know too much about history of football
Oh, sorry. Cultural yes, in football not much. Or I must have overlooked those watching K League for example One more factor in club football (or wherever you've got around 20 people squad) is that players wear numbers which they consider lucky for them. Hence you've got Ki who plays with 16 on his back whenever he can for KNT (and I always try to play with 12 for example). But they rather chose from 1 to 11 as in youth squads there isn't too much to choose from.
I should say that every area of the sport world have their own tradition(US sports, etc) so to each their own, no point of making a useless post, everyone knows what numbers traditionally represent positions on the field, no need to pretend to act smart.
People only care about goalscorers, which is why 9 and 10 have the reputations that they do. 7 is also a goalscorer's number (but not at the same level as the 9/10).
