    what's it to you?!
this thread is making me sooooo hungry.

however, i still think the one dish that can never ever fail is huevo frito con patatas. nothing like a fried egg, french fries, and maybe even some rice with tomato sauce. take the crappiest roadisde hut you can find, order one, and it will still come out amazing

I´m here to impress you all with knowledge.. heh heh.

The reason you see alot of ham in Spanish Cuisine goes back 500 years to the inquisition. During the time of the expulsion of the moors and jews one way you could prove you were not a muslim or a jew was to goto the local bodega, drink your wine, and eat a little jamon. This also led to the explosion of the bars in Spain as being seen in public eating jamon and drinking wine was a way to avoid any questions about your catholic faith. Since then spanish jamon has spread to almost all dishes spanish.

    Thanks for the information.
That makes sense, since both Jews and Muslims don't eat pork.
Only Muslims don't drink alcohol. Jews drink plenty of wine, etc.

I tried Estrella Galicia and it tasted like rat urine! I would love to find more Spanish beers. I love beer. Spanish wines are delicious. I have tried about 10 different ones in the last 2 months.

This is called Calimocho, most popolar in the northern regions of Spain and southern France. It is ghetto drinking for the Spaniard, i love it.

The Estrella Galicia imported to the US is shit. I have been to the brewery in Coruna half a dozen times and the beer is best served off the tap.
IMO, best beer from Iberai....SUPER BOCK, it is Portuguese but awesome.

Best place to buy Spanish cured meats in the US is La Espanola. Their charcuterie selection and quality is very good and priced reasonable unlike la tienda. In most cases they are using the same products as Spanish Table and La Tienda but at a less expensive price.

The Spanish national dish, so far as I can tell, is an overcooked hamburger with a fried egg on top.

As far as you're concerned, that's probably true.

a hamburger with an egg on top of it...does it come with paddles to shock me back after the heartache? lol.
I bet this dish would be a huge success here in The States.

Not the way I read it. You act like it's the best dish Spain has. I'm saying your not of sufficient quality to know any better.

That's just plainly incorrect. I said no such thing.

I went back and reread. You're right, you're calling it the national dish, which is complete hogwash, except to someone who doesn't know any better.

But to humor you a little, here you go. Every region has their specialties. As most know, in Valencia, there's paella. I like Galician food the best. But to indicate a hamburger with an egg is anywhere close to the national dish is absurb.

Do yourself a favor. Catch a Ryan Air flight to Spain, go to Plaza Major in Madrid to a group of Mesons called "The Caves". Feast and drink. It could be the best six hours of your life.

Do "The Caves" come with wilted lettuce, too?

    Anyway, I'm banned from Ryanair.

I guess if the burger, egg and lettuce had been battered and deep fried, and served with a can of Tennant's you would have enjoyed it. ;)

    Now you're speakin' my language.

You missed out the gravy or (and/or?) curry sauce, however.
