What's next? Are they gonna say the stadiums won't be built in time?! Or that it's impossible to move them to other countries afterwards like they promised?! I thought I could trust FIFA & Qatar...

Say it ain't so! Say. It. Ain't. So.

shocked. thoroughly shocked i tell ya.

i mean really, here's a brilliant idea.....lets rely on a technology that doesnt EXIST yet and is the entire BASIS for being able to even host the freaking WC. ya, that sounds like a place we should give something as big as the greatest sporting event on earth.

    ******** FIFA and their corruption.

Hey! Give Sepp a break. He obviously didn't believe they'd make those floating sun-blockers.

His plan was to simply move the WC to the winter. That was much more likely than the air conditioning plan. The Euro leagues love making sacrifices for FIFA.

Is it bad that I am hoping Qatar fails in their plans to host?

If they do, I am aware of a certain country that could pull the WC off on short notice with EXISTING infrastructure...

The fact that they are planning on building temporary stadiums JUST for the event and then breaking them down and donating/rebuilding them is nothing short of eco-terrorism IMO

Yet the 'temporary stadium and rebuild' plan was treated as the most wonderful thing in their bid. It was thought that it would bring high quality stadiums to poor parts of the world...

    Here's the thing:

The materials needed for a temporary stadium in one part of the world may be terrible materials in another part of the world. Wind, humidity, snow, etc. could wreak havoc with materials that are needed to weather heat, dryness, etc... It is a disaster waiting to happen... or, as you say it: eco-terrorism.

There were some amusing comments on the Ives site relative to this.

Dune, Qatar, Desert Planet...Sepp Harkonnen etc.

EXACTLY. the way these idiots described their plans you would think they would actually have to know something about designing and constructing massive buildings in specific geographical locations. their whole "we'll just package up these stadiums and ship them to some country who needs them" idea was a crock of shit to begin with. the logistics and cost of operating stadiums, nevermind actually having to assemble, disassemble, move and then reassemble the stadiums, is absurd. what country wants to take on that kind of project when it would be cheaper to design and build a stadium specific to your geography, climate, economy and infrastructure. this isnt like trying to find a square hole for a peg, its like trying to find hexadecagon hole.

this whole Qatar bid has epic failure written all over it. you just have to wonder how long FIFA is going to keep up the charade before they say ******** it, give it to the US.

If FIFA does pull the bid from Qatar and give it to the U.S., do Sepp and the rest of the ivory tower boys have to return the bribes? My question is half-serious - what's the protocol on keeping bribe money if you go back on what you promised you'd do?

I'd love to see Qatar, if the WC got yanked, say they wanted the money they (illegally) paid back.

It would make some really fun stories...

I think that, next time, you don't get your money until after the WC.

You may have up to 3 hookers beforehand.

Don't think of the US as the only country that would be ready to host on a short notice.
England would be ready to host the 2014 WC if something happened with Brazil, if Qatar could not host England would want to take their spot.
And the English are pissed about the Host Selection as well.

Whaddaya mean "Noboyd saw this coming?" After having lived in that area of the world and in that specific country, I could have told you that everything that they were planning was never going to happen, it was only to win the bid.

Having lots of money laying around kinds of dulls your sense of reality, especially if you are always trying to compete with Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Ergo, even though the West might be "shocked", everyone else in that area of the world knew that it was pie-in-the-sky.

As for the US getting the world cup, unless world oil and natural gas prices take enough of a nose dive to almost bankrupt the country, don't hold your breath.

    ?

    It was a joke.

I could have gone with "We're all nerds here, except when georg is posting. Then it's a bunch of nerds and a German."

    Joke.

    I get jokes.
