I'm curious. How do fans and the coaching staff rate Cherundolo? He's been with the team for 11 years so that must be quite something in the Bundesliga especially for a foreign player
A lot of H96 fans here were saying that Cherundolo didn't play particularly well this year. However, he managed to start most of the games he was available for anyway.
Well, most love him as a person and admire his loyalty to the club, the fans and the city but he's not that respected as a player. No one will ever say that he doesn't always give 100% but he's not a player that is good enough to play for a team fighting for the first half of the table imo. Well, Hannover obviously is not that club so he probably is a good fit. A solid average player for a solid, average boring club (less than average this season). 96 conceded the most goals of all Bundesliga teams in each of the last two seasons and he's been part of that defense. His crossing also is not really on Bundesliga level tbh. 3 assist over the last two seasons speaks a clear language. Still, after more than a decade I can't really imagine anyone other than Stevie playing on the right side, it would feel totally wrong. There were rumors today of Nürnberg being interested in him and that made me really realize how much it would hurt to see him play for a different Bundesliga side. He's 96 for life, at least he should be. I hope he'll resign, he wants two more years and 96 want the same so they should be able to agree to a new contract. This thread should give you some idea about the feelings of 96 fans. Even babelfish should translate a lot of it (and make you laugh). http://www.das-fanmagazin.de/forum/...nover_96/15434-steven_cherundolo/index70.html
Thanks, F, good stuff (especially that last comment!). For those of us who don't speak German, what does the "red" in the babelfish translation actually mean? I'm hoping "The USA is red" isn't predicting a bad tackle from behind in SA...
Cherundolo is out of contract this summer. Seltzer linked to an article about Roma being interested in Cherundolo, but he doesn't vouch for its validity. Seltzer also reported that Hannover have offered an extension to him and FC Nurnberg "are showing heavy interest." Soccer by Ives notes that Cherundolo told reporters after Saturday's national team practice that while it would be nice to re-sign with Hannover 96 (the only professional club he's ever played for) and retire with the club, he might also be interested in pursuing other options.
Roma: Cherundolo as successor to Cassetti Steve Cherundolo is Roma's choice for the successor to Marco Cassetti. We are speaking of a player with great international experience who has played for years in both the Bundesliga and the U.S. National Team. With Hannover he has played 245 games in 10 years and has also scored 6 important goals. With the USA he has played 44 games and 2 goals. He can also be used as a central defender or right winger. http://www.blitzquotidiano.it/sport/calciomercato-roma-cherundolo-il-dopo-cassetti-377487/
Now it kinda seems stupid to not extend the contract earlier. I wish him very well, but I doubt he'd make the first team at Roma.
Maybe he wants that challenge like Onyewu did. Besides, if you're going to be an aging defender nowadays, you might as well head to Serie A.
I'd imagine if he stays in Germany he'll resign with Hannover for 2 or 3 years, who knows and retire a LEGEND. I would say go for that. The Roma option seems interesting but he'd be just used for depth at most and probably never see any games but quite a paycheck.
Serie A isn't about the 6'3" forwards crashing the penalty box off crosses. And when you play the ball on the ground, Stevie is an OK back-up on the right, the left or midfield. Does he have his German citizenship yet?
You need 8 years + some test. He doesn't need it in Italy per se but, if he did have his German papers, he wouldn't count against Roma's non-EU limit. In Serie A, I believe, it's 5 per club and most clubs will allocate them to starters or top rotation players.
Premier League, Nurnberg, France, Roma interest was real. Maybe getting a German passport isn't in his best interest http://www.soccer365.com/us_news/story_26510222948.php
