Sorry for the interruption, but I can't seem to find an answer to this. Why do the USWNT game jerseys not have a badge (either US Soccer or something denoting the nationality of the team)? I though it maybe was some obscure Olympic rule, but other countries have their badges plainly displayed on their shirts. P.S. On the cover of the Eurosport catalog I just received, the jersey is worn by the player featured on the cover, US Soccer badge prominently displayed on the left breast.
OK. But as a follow-up, why nothing? I can't say I've done an exhaustive survey, but NZ today had a badge which incorporates the Olympic rings and some other symbol I couldn't quite make out, Canada has a badge (which is a maple leaf with the Olympic rings), Japan has a badge (its flag), and so forth. It strikes me as, well, lazy (among other descriptions), for Nike/US Soccer to forego any means on the shirt of identifying the team as from the US. At a minimum, it is a marketing opportunity lost (buy the US Women's Olympic team jersey, to go with your USSF-badged team shirt you already own). Surely, it couldn't have been that hard US Soccer to design a logo and have Nike put it on the shirts?
The Olympics can do their own marketing. If they want to get pissy about FA badges, why should associations help them. Are they getting paid? This IS a FIFA tournament.
A marketing opportunity for whom? I presume that if the USSF tried to make money off selling jerseys with the Olympic rings on them, the IOC would have them in court in five seconds.
I'm a little surprised that, after all of the efforts that the USOC made to market this badge: http://bsuatthegames.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/USOC.jpg ... that it has never gotten used on any Olympic uniform. Presumably they could use this one: http://www.insidegymnastics.com/content/articlefiles/1535-7-10 USA.jpg I'm befuddled as to why not? I'd like that Team USA badge with two (or three) gold stars above it.
