Definitely finding it ironic that they spent that much money on the stadium last year and now they are in a financial crisis. The Islanders being another "odd duck" in the pond, being they don't have a rich, private owner, needs to change at some point. The NASL was making big strides towards eliminating team owned and Traffic propped up teams by finding owners, can't have one like the Islanders with a question mark over their heads all the time regarding whether or not the government will keep funding them.
2012 Average Attendance Puerto Rico 1,864 Dunno, but the Islanders seem like a sinkhole for money to me
They had to play almost all of last season in a tiny facility during JRL's renovation, but it's been a downward trend for them. Obviously, pro/rel would have solved everything for them.
How do you know they wouldn't have been re-relegated, like nearly half the Championship sides promoted to the EPL?
I take it there is no official word on whether they will compete in CFU. The deadline for that is in January, I hope they make it.
If we'd had pro/rel for several years now, Toronto wouldn't be relegated this time around. After all, it's hard to relegate somebody who's already on the bottom tier of the pyramid.
Via Spanish-language news sources, the Islanders are going to put up a squad for the CFU Club Championships consisting mostly of young PR NT members (probably ones like Ramos and Marrero) and a few longtime veterans of the club (I'm guessing players like Delgado and Velez). Also from reading Spanish-language news sources and forums, it sounds like this was caused by a political situation as much as anything else. The Islanders had been receiving yearly subsidies from the Puerto Rican government each year of their existence, but when the opposition party took power earlier this year they apparently told all of the sporting entities they give subsidies to that the contracts for those would need to be looked at and possibly renegotiated, and the Islanders were told that could take months.
Well at the very least your description leaves open the opportunity to cut costs and survive, though not necessarily in NASL.
maybe the PR Islanders will also sit out the fall season Commissioner: NASL does not want to be an affiliated ... - The11 the11.ca/.../commissioner-nasl-does-not-want-to-be-an-affiliat...Share 2 days ago – Peterson said ... that not too many tears would be shed if the Islanders didn't come back.
That is not what he was quoted as saying. Read the piece again. That last paragraph is hearsay at best, or careless speculation from the writer. It is attributed to the ownership of clubs. If the Islanders can't shore up their ownership and move away from government support, then they don't have a long term future.
that is why there they are 3 points in between ''Peterson said'' and ''that not too many tears'', a lot of words were left out Anyway, it looks like the PR Islanders could be in big trouble
Ok. Poor editing then. It would be a shame to lose the Islanders, but with0ut better ownership there isn't much hope for them I agree.
But weren't YOU the one who put the ellipsis there? If so, then you're the one who made it appear that that's what Peterson said.
I know what he actually said, but the reason there was a response thinking he was the one making the comments about PR was because YOU incorrectly used ellipses and made it look like he was the one who said that. When YOU put the ... after Peterson, YOU were implying that the following words were his because that's how ellipses work.
