ok i like supporting under dog teams so ive decided to start supporting newport county and i was jus wondering if any one could tell me how they did in the 06\07 season and i understand that their from wales but could they still play in the english premier league ? thanks
They did alright last season; just missing out on the play-offs on the last day. They are based in the city of Newport, which is about five miles east of Cardiff. They're in Wales at present. They play in the 'Blue Square South' league; five divisions below the Premiership. You might want to give this a read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newport_County_A.F.C. Any other queries, just ask. Edit: Oh, by the way, we're your biggest rivals. I keep forgetting that.
Don't worry about that; I was just making a slight reference to the ambiguous historical status of Monmouthshire. But, having said that, they did play for three seasons in England in the nineties, while the Football Association of Wales was attempting to force them into the newly-formed League of Wales.
Take note everyone, this is the danger of supporting a random team! Newport is a complete dump of a town, why the hell would you want to associate yourself with it?
Newport is a shithole, but I've been down there quite a few times to see them play, especially recently with Jason Bowen and Steven Jenkins, Alsop et al playing for them... They just missed out on the playoffs last season after losing 2-1 at home to Cambridge City on the last day, a win would have put them in 4th place. Bit of general history for you: They joined the Football League in 1920, same time as us and Cardiff, spent most of their time in 3 (South) and then the fourth division. Relegated from division 3 in 1987 and then finished bottom of the Football League in 1988, before going out of business midway through their first season in the Conference. Their long-term aim is to be a FL club again, but at the moment they're looking for promotion to the Conference. Average attendance last season was around 1,000 I believe.
They got to the QFs of the European Cup Winners Cup in 80/81, quite an amazing feat. Equally amazing was their rapid descent into bankruptcy by the end of that decade.
Ha! Well, I didn't want to mention that, but yes, it does look like they couldn't be arsed to rebuild after the last war.
The new team Newport AFC were forced into exile and played at both Moreton in Marsh (90 miles away) and my club Gloucester City (50 miles away) in the 90's.
