Mods can close this washed up topic at anytime but from here on out your team is the New York Metrostars no matter where they're stadium will be. I've been confused all year long and even started a thread like this a while back but after watching game 1 against the Revs they still referred to your team as "New York" over and over again. Regardless, good job on getting the win tonight! I personally hope to see the NEW YORK Metrostars in the final!.......against the G's of course!
The team is called the Metrostars. Not NY/NJ Metrostars, not New York Metrostars, not New Jersey Metrostars. And it has been since the name change about 7 years ago. I guess some people in the media never read the memo.
If I was an announcer I would call them the NY MetroStars just for the benefit of new listeners. But the official name is just "MetroStars".
And Thomas Rongen has long been considered the pinnacle of soccer knowledge by the folks on this forum.
Like it or not, they are New York. The media NEEDS to relate the team to a location. It's stupid that the MetroStars put themselves in this position. NY/NJ is much better than nothing.
Haven't been there in a while, but in the MFO trophy, er um, honors case, from internationals, etc., items have "NY MetroStars" on them. Now, that was back in the official "NY/NJ" days. The team wouldn't be here, or Harrison, without proximity to NY. Players from overseas who say they want to play for the Metros don't say that because of the Garden State. When you hear other players and coaches from MLS refer to the club, they always say "New York." And what was, prior to this season, the most memorable image in our club's history? Cleetus lifting his jersey to reveal the "I LOVE NY" t-shirt. Officially, we're the MetroStars, but they need to be NY's team (regardless of what Dan Garber says). This is, after all, the metro-NY area.
Most annoying use of "NY/NJ"? EA Sports FIFA games. I want to know who in MLS keeps signing off on the use of an incorrect team name on an officially licensed product. Player names are one thing (No Youri, for example), but to get the name of the TEAM wrong is nuts.
In some ways they've never been able to shake the stupid NY/NJ tag that someone at startup time in 96 thought was a good idea.
As long as they get the Metrostars part right, I don't care what else they tag on. After all, we've been called worse by many.
I'm fine being "New York's team", but commentators shouldn't refer to us as the New York Metrostars. Its kinda like Juventus. Juve is Serie-A's Turin team, but nobody calles them Turin Juventus. You can call them the Turin side, or the Turin giants ... much like you should call us New York's super club !
They are paying attention.... What they want is to sale a name NY to a new owner of the next NY MLS Team and don't want anyting to stay in they way..... Becouse a new MLS team is coming to the area sooner or later and will be to New York.....
A new one? I hope so. I hope we don't get stuck with the New York Wizards... (sorry in advance, KC fans.)
The second and third sentences are good, it's just that the first sentence messes it all up, and the fourth is a bad finish. It's kind of like saying Glasgow is in England. Or how about a team in Connecticut called "New York", they're in the tri-state area too. I agree it's dumb that we have no location name. The media isn't used to this, so they tend to make one up. Since the other two teams that play in our current home are called "New York", that's what they usually go with. The big difference is that both those teams actually played in New York. MetroStars never (just about) have. So whatever we're called, it's our own front office's fault. They created the vacuum. I'm growing on calling ourselves Harrison MetroStars starting in 2007. The city saved this club from possible extinction, why not give them some love? Yes, no one has ever heard of them, but they'll learn. No one had ever heard of Bridgeview, Carson, or Frisco either, now we all know where they are. Besides, NYC or maybe Long Island will get a team soon enough (and hopefully it's an expansion team). That team will be called something related to "New York". It would just sound silly for Metro to be called New York once that happens, so we may as well change it come the new stadium. Sorry, but I can't believe the team will lose one single fan by changing its name to reflect where they actually play, so may as well tell the truth.
They actually play in the NY metro-area. Most people living in that part of Jersey work and/or play in NYC anyway. The entire economy of the region is contingent upon the greatness of NYC. No, it isn't like saying Glasgow is in England. Have you no sense of geography? And you can't exactly see the Empire State Building from CT, like you can from the Swamp, and perhaps from the stadium in Harrison. Should the franchise-formerly-known-as-the-Burn no longer be referred to as "Dallas"? The Cowboys don't play in Dallas, either. The Giants and Jets went through quite a long state of logo denial befoe re-embracing the marketing potential of their old "NY" logos, and it has served them both rather well. I'm sorry, but the idea of calling the team "Harrison MetroStars" is ridiculous. Keep it officially MetroStars, but don't wince when people say "NY." That's why the team is here, and will be in Harrison, not because of the great town of Harrison, but because Harrison was the best/only available location in the NYC area. I still wish they'd have stuck with "Empire Soccer Club" (to whom I used to write checks for tix), the original franchise name. But I support this club because they are the team of the NY metroarea. NY is this club's raison d'etre.
That's nice and all true, but I don't see how that's relevant. NJ does exist, even if only because of NYC (the northern part anyway). So line of sight for a tall building is the test? That's a new one for me. The Burn actually played in Dallas for 9.5 years. How long did the Cowboys play in Dallas? How long did the Jets and Giants play in NYC? How long did the MetroStars? Why is that rediculous? Because no one has ever heard of Harrison? So? Who ever heard of Green Bay before the Packers? Besides, it's good enough for the PATH station the club will tell everyone to use. Harrison was the only location in the area because the mayor wanted us, and no one else did enough to help get us a stadium. NYC didn't, Newark didn't, no one did. I go back to the 2nd team argument. I think NYC or Long Island will eventually get a team of its own, at least I hope they do. How bad will it look to have 2 "New York" teams when only one plays there and one never did? I think it would be silly. Just imagine "And the New York Empire cross the Hudson to play the New York MetroStars". And yes, I know the NFL went through it.
Excellent points throughout, and I'm with anyone who spouts French to clinch his argument. Allez, Youri! However, if Harrison is to be honored why not go the distance and completely rename the team: the Harrison Hippos? If Rochester can have Rhinos -- which are not native to NY -- Harrison can have Hippos. There is even the Passaic River flowing by the stadium for our Hippos to call home. And as we are always being told by the America First crowd, American teams ALWAYS are named for their city first, then the team name in plural -- and usually it's the name of an animal. The average American will then be able to relate to our team; it won't sound foreign to his or her ear. so of course they will flock to Harrison to see the team play. That will leave the door open for a REAL NY team, despite the fact that there is no REAL place for such a team in NY City, and probably never will be. I suppose a Long Island team could be called a NY team, since it is in NY State, but after the WUSA flop on Long Island, I don't think MLS will be too eager to go there, unless a stadium site can be found right off the LIRR. One would have better luck digging for diamonds on Bleeker Street. A big sign now stands at the stadium sight in Harrison, proclaiming it the future Metrostars Stadium. If Harrison is okay with just plain Metrostars, it's okay with me, too. If others outside the region can't bother to get it straight, hard cheese. Very hard cheese.
Well then, if it does come to this, it has to be New Jersey Harriers. Get it? Hippos would be just stupid. Except for Meola, anyway.
Really? No kidding! I had no idea... But why the exception for Tony? Oh.... I get it. The 'Fat Tony' knee-jerk stereotype bit. Well, I wouldn't call him slim, but I think the fat-bit only works as a made-man's moniker, and if it conveys the image of a dangerous character betwen the pipes, I'm okay with that. The Predatory Marsh Birds from Harrison? Not bad.
I'm really just trying to get enough buzz going so we can have a fly over (and a fly up) of AV-8B Harriers for Opening Day 2007. That would be cool.
Harrison? No offense, but that's a bush league name. How many Harrisons do you see in the NBA, MLB, or NFL? It's either New Jersey or New York. We gotta sell this game to the American crowd. Let's give them what they want.
