Minimal distractions, are you serious? If you notice the type of collar your jersey has while playing, maybe you're in the wrong sport. We had them on our college kits and I couldn't have cared less.
Count me against a collar. Never had a collar on any of the sports jerseys I ever wore. Maybe it's an American thing, I realize some soccer shirts have collars, but a collar seems out of place on a sports jersey. A collar seems more suited for the golf course.
We had a collar on our white jersey in the 2002 World Cup. Our most successful World Cup in the modern era. Long live the collar.
We also had a color for both our red and white jerseys at France '98, and the sooner that tournament is purged from my memory, the better.
All white, all blue, or all red. No stripes or sashes. This is a good "all blue" for example. all white all red? Austria sometimes? The swiss?
Best jersey so far, aside from the red circa 1998 (?) was the anthracite jersey. I wear it about as much as any other article of clothing I own.
I have neck texture issues, can't imagine why people would ever wear a turtleneck, so I'm jaded when it comes to something near my neck. I just think a collar detracts from the look of an soccer jersey. Of the kits I've seen that I really do not like, the majority were collared. Many times the collar appears to be stapled on to the top of the kit. To me it seems like the appendix of the soccer jersey, vestigial.
Maybe the style bled over from Rugby? Actually, on a golf course, I would prefer no collar (fewer items to distract you in a swing), but that is not "acceptable".
yeah yeah, they were the closest examples of the all one color look. I really liked the dark grey. Howard wore all black recently, with the old crest. Kinda epic.
Please don't change the striped jersey with the blue shorts. The waldos are by far the most distinctive and dynamic looking uniforms the US has ever worn. Tweak them, don't ditch them.
collars are terrible when the shirt has designs or stripes. if kept simple in one color then it looks nice for me. that red away jersey for england is an excellent example.
The red jersey we wore in 1998 was a beauty, most underrated USMNT shirt of all time IMO. Shame it had to be associated with Mike Burns "covering" the near post and Dooley jumping blindly into mid-air with his back to the ball....and a certain player who would later coach the USMNT
I was under the impression that most around here pine for a red jersey each time a new one comes out harkening back to that specific jersey. I thought that was the jersey that most would point to as "The Best". I would say for me, the anthracite was my favorite, but that red one was pretty close.
