    Post-Summer 2012 Tournament Results...

    Stock on the Rise:
Gomez- most significant rise from this tournament.

    Stock on the Decline:
Corona- least amount of play from anyone besides Rimando. can't be a good sign
    Wondolowski- lost in the shuffle
Onyewu- worst performance of any USMNT player this camp
Edu- I still think he is valued but i don't see him having a death hold on the position either.

    Undecided:
Cameron, Parkhurst, Beckerman, Castillo, and Boyd could make arguments for and against but i will have to wait till later to see how Klinsy judges them.

    Thus, looking at our pool...
    Key:
    5=competent starter, competent back-up
    4=competent starter, shaky/aging back-up
    3=competent starter, no back-up
    2=shaky/aging starter, shaky/aging back-up
    1=shaky/aging starter, no back-up
    0=no one.

    Goalkeepers-Howard, Guzan, (4)
    Right Back-Cherundolo, Parkhurst (2)
two Center Backs-Bocanegra, Goodson, Onyewu, Cameron (2)
    Left Back-Johnson, Castillo (4)
three Mid's-Bradley, Jones, Torres, Edu, Beckerman, Corona (4)
two Wingers-Donovan, Dempsey, Gomez, Wondolowski (4)
    Forward-Altidore, Boyd (4)

    *Analysis
    The good news:
We're good in goal right now but need Guzan to land on his feet, Left Back is looking up but we need to still solidify that position, Midfield is looking solid and will only improve with a healthy in-form Holden... it's currently the least of our worries, at Wing we have solid players but they're OLD and the pipeline is depressing, and at forward, we have a solid forward with Altidore and Gomez/Dempsey rotating in but the other options are not settled.

    the bad news:
It's about time to hit the panic button for central defenders. Bocanegra who will be 35 in 2014 and is at a club that is about to be liquidated is our only solid and trustworthy defender at the moment. Also, while it is not as bad, Cherundolo will be 35 also in 2014 and our RB options are untested and can be considered not that great if you consider Lichaj a LB, Chandler a German, Williams a CDM, and Spector as inconsistently healthy. Parkhurst is alright, but i wouldn't be excited to face one of the world powers with him back there either. Finally, we have got to find some young stud that can take the reigns from Donovan, Dempsey, and now Gomez at some point. We are heavily reliant on these players and they are not getting any younger.

Who we might see in the Future...
#1 Eric Lichaj RB/LB. it's a crime he wasn't included into camp and i'm sure Klinsy is feeling the pressure now.

Who i want to see before the end of the year... before Cupcake:

    in Goal
    1. Ryan Meara

I do not want to see Meara go to Ireland. He's better than Hamid, Johnson, and MacMath.

    at Right Back
    1. Eric Lichaj
    2. Daniel Williams
    3. Alfredo Morales
    4. Chance Myers
    5. Steve Beitashour
    6. Joshua Gatt

TOP PRIORITY!!! we need to figure out another starting option besides Cherundolo and soon. Also, we need to figure out who is going to be back-up.

    at Left Back
    1. Eric Lichaj
    2. Daniel Williams

Johnson has this position on lockdown but after him it's Edgar Castillo who doesn't necessarily inspire the most confidence. Personally, i hope that one of the other options will lock down the right side so Lichaj can focus on the left side.

    at Center Back
    1. Tim Ream
    2. Seb Hines
    3. George John
    4. Zak Whitbread

We are going to have to overhaul this position but we are going to have to limit our options down until Camp Cupcake. I want to continue to see Cameron but i also want to see these other options.

    at Def Midfield
    1. Daniel Williams
    2. Stuart Holden
    3. Alfredo Morales

Edu and Jones both have strengths and weaknesses at this position. Edu is slightly better defensively but Jones is significantly better offensively. Therefore, i want to see how the other options of Williams, Holden, and Morales perform in this position.

    at Midfield
    1. Stuart Holden
    2. Sacha Kljestan
    3. Graham Zusi
    4. Mikkel Diskerud

We need to hope that Holden gets back to form. If so, our team significantly improves. Also, i see Kljestan performing well in this current 4-3-3 format.

    at Winger
    1. Joshua Gatt
    2. Chris Pontius
    3. Freddy Adu
    4. Brek Shea
    5. Graham Zusi
    6. Joe Gyau

We have got to see what else we have besides Donovan and Dempsey. Let's hope one of these players can do it.

    at Forward
    1. Andrew Wooten
    2. Kenny Cooper

Same as the Winger position... we need to develop depth at this position. However, i would just experiment with Wooten and Cooper until Cupcake.

rough speculation, but looking at the remaining 6 games on the calendar for 2012... these are the line-ups i'd use to integrate the new faces:

    v Mexico
    GK Howard, Meara
    FB Johnson, Lichaj, Castillo, [Beitashour/Myers]
    CB Cameron, Ream, John, Hines
MF Bradley, Torres, Williams, Zusi, Kljestan, Morales
    AT Dempsey, Pontius, Gatt, Adu
    FW Altidore, Gomez

Note: I'm pretty set on this line-up so far. Granted, things can change but i want to see the US experiment without all of their trusted veterans. the main choice i'm facing right now is would i take Beitashour or Myers.

    v Jamaica & v Jamaica
    GK Howard, Guzan, Rimando
    FB Cherundolo, Johnson, Lichaj, [Chandler*/Spector/Castillo]
    CB Bocanegra, Goodson, Ream, Cameron
MF Williams, Jones, Bradley, Torres, Holden, [Zusi/Kljestan]
    AT Dempsey, Donovan, [Gatt/Shea/Beasley], [Pontius/Adu]
    FW Gomez, Altidore

Note: A lot more will change between here and then but for our next qualifier, i'm looking to find out if Chandler will commit to the US, and if not, who is in better form, Spector or Castillo. Also, who is on top: Zusi or Kljestan in the two-way MF role; Gatt, Shea or Beasley as a speedy attacker (back-up for Donovan); and Pontius or Adu as a technical attacker (back up for Dempsey). However, this is NOT the time to experiment.

v Guatemala & v Antigua (if we are qualified)
    GK Guzan, Meara, [Hamid/Johnson]
    FB Lichaj, Johnson, [Chandler*/Spector/Castillo], [Sakai*/Henley*/Beitashour/Myers]
    CB Cameron, Ream, John, Hines
    MF Williams, Morales, Holden, [Bradley/Torres/Edu/Alonso*], [Zusi/Kljestan], [Diskerud/Corona]
    AT Gatt, Adu, Pontius, [Shea/Gyau]
    FW [Agudelo/Sapong/Cooper], [Altidore/Boyd/Wooten]

Note: if we beat Jamaica both home/away that will afford us a lot of flexibility to experiment. I suggest playing some form of the best players that will be under 30 come 2014. However, i wouldn't mind resting some of the regular starters like Bradley and Altidore if they're not needed.

    v Russia
    GK Howard, Guzan
    FB Lichaj, Johnson, [*Chandler/Williams], [Spector/Castillo/Beitashour/Myers/Parkhurst/ *Sakai/*Henley]
    CB Cameron, Ream, [Bocanegra/Goodson/Onyewu], [Hines/Whitbread]
MF Jones, Torres, Bradley, Holden, [Diskerud/Corona], [Alonso*/Morales/Edu]
    AT Donovan, Dempsey, [Pontius/Adu], [Gatt/Shea/Gyau]
    FW Altidore, [Boyd/Wooten/Agudelo/Sapong/Cooper]

Note: At this point, i would like to start seeing who is going to fill in for some of the older players and i want to see if we can get more out of the new faces going into the hex. Also, i would play with the line-up and player's positions some too if it needs tweaking.

Monitoring... but left off (Camp Cupcake candidates mostly)
GK Kennedy, Gruenebaum, Hall, Pickens, MacMath
DF Sinovic, Morrow, Hedges, S. Williams, Lade, Cunningham, Pearce, Gonzalez, Brooks, Besler, Marshall, Brunner, Rusin, Wynne, Moor, Soares, Parke, Orozco, Stanko, Berry, Gaddis, Anibaba, Loyd, Beltran, Alston
MF Gil, O' Brien, Bedoya, Rogers, DeLeon, Rowe, Nguyen, Feilhaber, Evans, Cascio, Gaven, Davis, Cronin, Kitchen, McCarty, Okugo, Clark, Beckerman, Larentowicz, Moriyasu*
FW Bijev, Bruin, Bunbury, Wondolowski, Buddle, Davies, McInerney, Salgado, Nagbe*, Mwanga*, Wenger

At the end of the year, i want to know:
    (1) All about the dual-nationals. Will Chandler commit to the US and play in cap-tying game? Note that i still say we should at least attempt to call in Sakai and Henley too. Also, will Alonso be eligible? Furthermore, i say go ahead and call in Meara... we need him more than people think we do. Does anyone know if Moriyasu wants to and is also good enough for the USMNT? And when will Nagbe and Mwanga gain citizenship?
    (2) Excluding the dual-nationals, who is the best fullback outside of Lichaj, Johnson, and Cherundolo? is it Castillo, Spector, Beitashour, Myers, or Parkhurst? or is it possibly a converted Danny Williams or Alfredo Morales?
    (3) Is Geoff Cameron ready to be an international center back? Also, i want Ream, John, Whitbread, and Hines to get their chance at center back to determine their worth. we have got to find some younger options than Bocanegra, Onyewu, and Goodson.
    (4) Who is the heir/back-up to Donovan and Dempsey? Gatt, Adu, and Pontius, should have the opportunity to impress. Beasley, Shea, and Gyau should be considered also.
    (5) What does our depth look like at forward past Gomez and Altidore? A lot will tell during the course of the MLS/Euro season, but right now, i'm looking at Boyd, Wooten, Agudelo, Sapong, and Cooper to compete for a spot to try and impress.
    (6) How will Holden return from injury?
    (7) Who is on top regarding our midfielders? Williams, Jones, Bradley, Torres, and in-form Holden is an impressive group... But there's still room for competition among Zusi, Kljestan, Diskerud, Corona, Morales, Edu, and Alonso. And if these players don't work out, we can rely on Beckerman or go further in our stable during camp cupcake.
    (8) Who has the makings for the captain if Carlos Bocanegra needs to be replaced and Steve Cherundolo is not around? Michael Bradley, Tim Howard, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, or someone else?

I think a lot of people would, but in form-Shea hasn't been around in a few months. We'll have to see how he does when he recovers from his turf toe (every time they mention that, I think of the King of the Hill where Bobby gets gout and Hank acts all proud because he thinks it's turf toe).

I don't think JK is going to experiment with the remaining qualifiing games. We might see Lichaj, Ream, Williams, Agudelo, but other than that I dont expect any surprises.

However, if it comes to the last 2 and we have already qualified than yeah, lets see some new blood and give them some runs. Against Russia too, that should be the goal of that trip...

I want badly to see what Gatt can do.

With the Gold Cup a year away which also in the middle of the hex... i believe it would be an excellent opportunity to try out some new faces and rest some veterans. my ideas right now:

looking at the list of before Camp Cupcake call-ups again, i can shorten it down to:
-Give a call-up to Meara, Gyau, and Mix but they can wait on minutes.
-Give Pontius, Gatt, Morales, Wooten, Holden, Cooper, Bruin, Zusi, Kljestan, Ream, John, Hines, Williams, and Lichaj some PT.

Now, my Camp Cupcake roster as of now:
    GK: Meara, Rimando, Hamid, Johnson

MF: Cronin, Beckerman, Kitchen, Okugo, Diskerud, O' Brien, Zusi, Pontius, DeLeon, Gatt, Shea, Adu
FW: Cooper, Bruin, Sapong, Agudelo, Wondolowski

    Alternates:

    Starting XI:
    --------------------Cooper-----------------------
    ---------Pontius-------------Gatt----------------
    -------------Diskerud----Zusi--------------------
    ------------------Beckerman----------------------
    Loyd------------------------------------Parkhurst
    ----------Gonzalez---------John------------------

Great list Eleven, Just a few things..Antoine Hoppenot is a FWD not a CB and Marfan is a Midfielder his bro is a good LB. This is quality depth right there commin in this upcoming Jan camp. Probably going to be a lot more talented than the last.

I only see Omar Gonzalez attending Camp Cupcake if he doesn't get any European offers.

    1) Who cares? We don't need any of them.
    2) I'd like to give Hedges a tryout at LB
    3) Yup
4)Who runs well in space with a 5 speed transmission to open angles? Gatt may be a predictable straight line speedster, Adu wanders aimlessly, Pontius is a smarty but don't know about running ability, Gyau - dunno, Beasley is known quantity, Shea creates space for himself to cross but has one gear, runs like a dragster, needs to channel his inner Drogba with those long legs on big body.
    5) we suddenly have more than enough CF's.
    6) questions, questions
    7) I"d like to see more Zusi
    8) Goodson

I've been a great Fabian Johnson supporter from before day one. Looks like he panned out. His Excellency is right again.

As for the others.....how long you got?

I should have added that I'm keeping my eye on Morales. Kid 's got game. Showing more promise in the offensive end than schlappenmeister Chandler. Need to see shut down ability over time - he's young.

You said that we don't need any of the dual nationals and Johnson is one of them.

That is just foolish I like Morales a lot and I liked the way how he bullied the Mexican U23 team as a DM, but Chandler is a better RB than Morales. Also Morales is a dual national I thought you said we don't need any of them?
